This introductory text explores how contributors to criminal investigation and its resulting prosecution are more effective when they understand and appreciate their role on the team, what role other team members play, and how it all comes together. 5-0 out of 5 stars O'Hara's Fundamentals of Criminal Investigation
I recently gave my first copy of this book to a relative who just graduated college with a CJ degree. The first copy of this book assisted me in promoting three times in my law enforcement career. The information contained within the cover of this book is more than just theory. When put to practice the info is right on.The first copy of the book didn't have too much info on electronic/IT type investigations but the new edition has info on this subject.
I would highly recommend this book for a new investigator as well as a seasoned investigator as there is info to help the new and refresh the seasoned.I'm retired now but I still pull it off the shelf for reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Law Enforcement Bible
This text is a must for any criminal justice student or law enforcement officer. The book covers all aspects of the art of investigation. Only through real world experience will an investigator become an expert in this field, however this book lays a very solid foundation and contains many sound, tried and proven criminal investigative techniques. I have been a law enforcement agent for twenty years and this is one of the cornerstones in my personal library of law books.
The seventh edition contains approximately 900 pages, but is a very interesting read. I have probably read most of it, including some chapters multiple times. The information inside the chapters isclearly written, easy to understand and no nonsense. This book should be required reading in every police academy in the country.

Although a long book, it was very easy to read.It was an interesting read also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great thriller from Don Bendell. It's a good read...
Major Bobby Samuels and his female partner Captain Bo Devore find themselves back in the thick of terrorist plots, this time here at home as the second installment of Bendell's Criminal Investigation Detachment (CID) thrillers unfolds from one end of the country to the other.

Don has lived what he writes about. His own personal history is the stuff of legends. Don is an excellent writer and a patriot who cares deeply for America and those who serve her in these dangerous times. This book is as timely as tomorrow's headlines. It makes a nice gift for our men and women who are far from their homes and loved ones so that we can sleep safely in our beds.

John D. Trudel

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb thriller
Though he drank a few at a stop-off at the Denver airport, Army's Criminal Investigation Detachment (CID) Major Bobby Samuels remains alert noticing a Mexican passenger acting slightly strange. He informs his subordinate Captain Bo Devore and soon afterward a flight attendant as he realizes the person is not Mexican, but Middle Eastern. The plain clothes military police investigators thwart a hijacking, but the plane crashes in the Rockies; they insure everyone, except the hijacker, survives until help arrives.

However, the two CID agents also learned from the information the deceased terrorist carried of an Al-Qaeda plot to sneak into the country from the porous Mexican border two backpack nuclear bombs to detonate at the same time in two American cities. Thus their mission has changed from investigating a potential Iranian agent at the Monterrey, California Defense Language School to uncovering the whereabouts of the dirty bombs and their holders before the terrorist acts occur.

BROKEN BORDERS, the sequel to the exhilarating CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DETACHMENT, is a superb thriller that provides the audience with a deep look at the work of the CID as part of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT).This time the fight is stateside (as opposed to the first tale whose setting is in Iraq). The story line is non stop action from the Colorado crash until the final confrontation as heroic Major Samuels and Captain Devore try to avert a 9/11 repeat as Don Bendell makes a strong case to plug the leak at the Mexican border not because of the vast majority of illegal entrants seeking economic opportunity, but to prevent a monstrous atrocity on American soil.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed, but nonetheless enjoyable.
I really liked this book. It is a good entry into the growing genre of the "Martial arts thriller". I like the main character Bobby Samuels. I love the action and the story line. My only gripe is that some of the dialogue is a bit drawn out and unrealistic. An example of this is the joke about the little girl with the puppy. I also thought that the demise of the villian was anticlimactic. Other then that, the book is a good read and I look forward to the next entry in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars terrific look at CID
At Fort Benning, Criminal Investigation Detachment Major Bobby Samuels successfully completes a disgusting case involving a commanding officer abusing his position of authority to almost rape a direct-reports enlisted soldier. After reading the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) rights to Colonel Rodriguez, Smith leaves Fort Benning to return to his duty station the Pentagon.Bobby thinks his late wife would have supported his return to active military after 9/11 as a CID cop, having been an LAPD civilian homicide detective, and not a Special Forces soldier as he was during his first tour.

Commanding General of the US Forces in Iraq Jonathan Perry briefs Samuels on his next Top Secret assignment.Samuels is to go undercover as an enlisted man to investigate several bombs that killed Americans in the Baghdad Green Zone and other locations in Iraq.Working undercover he must identity the Saboteur who probably is an Al-Qaeda operative working inside.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DETACHMENT is a terrific look at the work of the CID, insight into the UCMJ, and from a military perspective the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) especially in Iraq.Though prejudiced on the side that the war in Iraq is just and part of the GWOT (reminiscent of Sergeant Barry Sadler's Ballad Of the Green Berets), the story line is action-packed as Major Samuels tries to uncover who the saboteur is.The hero is a fabulous ethical patriot trying to do the right honorable thing for his country and for the military.Readers whether they agree with Don Bendell's position on Iraq or not will agree that he has written a delightful military police procedural that provides insight into those who really have sacrificed plenty during the GWOT.

4-0 out of 5 stars 9 out of 10. Not for the faint hearted
This book delivers. It gives a very good introduction to the law enforcement in the U.S. It sounds like a good book to be in hand for every beginnner police officer and for those who intend to practice that path. I must say that the high number of real cases described and of photos, though sometimes exciting, could be disturbing. I give it 9/10.

It asks the question 'What do practitioners actually do when they provide advice for the police and the courts and how do they do it?' The contributors to the book are all experts in the field of offender profiling and behavioural investigative advice. The chapters provide valuable insights into particular case details, the ethical and legal consequences of advice, coverage of the relevant theoretical context, explanations for conclusions drawn, practical difficulties in preparing reports, potential pitfalls, and an account of how cases are resolved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Psychological Profiling- It may after all be of help.
Crime Profiling originated in popualr writings of FBI Special Agents like Douglas and Ressler and caught the imagination of the world with Hollywood films like the 'Silence of the Lamb' and TV series like 'Profiliers', 'Cracker'. The last decade has seen acdemics attacking some of the fundamental postulates of the popular ideas on 'Offender Profiling". Today for each book advocating 'Offender Profiling' there is another book criticising 'Offender Profiling' and the battle lines were getting drawn with serious academics beginning to distance themselves from the Profiling Programme. As a practioner ( I work as a senior police officer in India) I was becoming cynical about salvaging anything from the initial promise of profiling as a helpful tool in investigating difficult crimes.
This book is the first serious attempt to bridge the gap and create a possible middle ground. It tells us the extent to which a criminal investigation can be enriched by inputs from serious academics and the manner in which such advice should be dealt with. I think it is a must-read for Police Officers and legal practioners around the world and should now show us the way to develop further collaboration between academics and practioners to make psychological profiling tenable and scientific.
The book avoids unnecessary academic jargons so typical of complex academic journals and is in the jenre of academic writings that are making a serious effort to reach out to practioners like me.
Great Job. ... Read more

Book was in great shape but not as full of pertinant information as i had hoped

2-0 out of 5 stars An Over-view of the Subject.
For my purposes the book is a waste of time. If you know pretty much nothing about the subject, it's okay. But the author's schemata is not standard practice. One of the other reviewers noted that the book doesnt address the realities of the criminal justice system, and theyre correct. Criminal Justice is not CSI or LAW & ORDER. It's more like Kabuki Theatre, where the players act-out rigid roles and the truth be damned. I'm thinking of a local event where the victim phones 911 when a rapist comes into her home, the police refuse to even search the residence when they respond, and after she's raped the detective insists she made the whole thing up. Except she didnt. Lawsuits for incompetence cost police departments fortunes. I suppose if PDs used some sort of script to do their work it would be something like what this book offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching
Gardner's approach to crime scene investigation is logical, methodical, and organized. It provides a solid ground for teaching a basic crime scene course. The processing model presented in the book provides the police academy cadets with a guide on how to approach each crime scene.Very well presented!Plus, Gardner knows his forensics - YEAH!There are so many books out there with strange bogus forensic information, the kind that makes you go, "WHAT??? Noooooo."As a practicing Criminalist with a Masters in Forensic Science, I am happy with his book as a permanent fixture on my desk and in my classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I am forensic scientist who has qualified as a expert witness numerous times in numerous courts in both Firearms Examination and Crime Scene Investigation.I also teach Crime Scene Investigation at the collegiate level.I have used this text for the past four semesters and have been very satisfied with it.As an professor, I received teaching aids that went along with this book. Both the teaching aids and the book have been well received by my students (and have made other professors jealous). The students also comment on the case examples that are in the book and how these real examples help them to understand the topics better.

This book received one bad review on this website written by Boyd B.I must say I disagree with this bad review on many levels. The review criticizes the author for going into too much detail in bloodstain pattern analysis saying he takes a trigonmetric approach but lacks detail in other disciplines.Well the fact is, Mr. Gardner takes a similar approach to shooting reconstruction.Mr. Garner also goes into much detail in search patterns and crime scene sketching giving numerous examples of different approaches. His section on fingerprints is very good - especially when used as a field guide. The fact that Gardner goes into more detail in one of the most complex aspects of crime scene investigations (bloodstain pattern analysis) is a true testiment to his desire to make a difference in investigations.

You can certainly tell that Mr. Gardner has spent significant time in the field and gives a practical (as the title says) approach to crime scene investigation.I have used this book to teach college students and forensic scientists who are training in crime scenes and police officers.I highly recommend you read this book if you are looking to get into the field or just want to know more about crime scene investigation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new investigators
As a officer I found this book to be a great read. I highly recommend this book to new officers or anyone interested in the investigations field. Everything is covered in this addition. I especially liked the included interrogation and deception detection tips. Why learn this the hard way through trial and error(like many of use do in law enforcement)? This book does not read like a product of academia; which is sometimes stifled and stiff. Instead, the reader is given an insight into police work by an experienced police investigator.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some of the examples are old, out dated methods
Overall, this text is not bad, although several instructional areas are out-dated material, ie: marking "shell casings, "bullets", on the face, etc. Also, todays training does not include marking handguns onevery piece that can be removed, ie: frame, cylinder, barrel, grips, etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An action-packed tale
Al Qaeda apparently has expanded its operational base with new training facilities in the Far East.Their strategic plan is to use these bases as a jumping off point to test the resolve and strengths of America and its Pacific allies. They are getting bolder with each successful terrorist attack on American interests and are considering an assault on a West Coast city that will turn Katrina and 9/11 into minor footnotes.

US Senator James Weatherford is outraged by al Qaeda's attacks. He demands the military prevent any further ones although he disguises his reason in patriotic generalities; in fact each incident costs Weatherford millions as he has made a fortune working the Pacific Rim.The Pentagon always salutes a member of Congress so the brass assigns US Army CID undercover officers Major Bobby Samuels and Captain Bo Devore to investigate. They begin to uncover two things: the planned al Qaeda terrorist attack on American soil and Weatherford's questionable and probably illegal partnership with former Communists.

The third CID thriller (see CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DETACHMENT and CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DETACHMENT: BROKEN BORDERS) is an action-packed tale that has the heroes dodging assassins on two continents. The story line is action-packed as their case gets increasingly complicated and making less sense with each clue they uncover requiring out of the military crypt thinking; which is why Major Bobby and Captain Bo were assigned lead.Don Bendell has written an exhilarating anti-terrorist thriller that showcases how difficult it is to prevent an attack even with dedicated intelligent people doing their best.

5-0 out of 5 stars I WROTE THIS
Many readers have asked me if MAJ Bobby Samuels and CPT Bo Devore are ever going to get together romantically. I hope that you have enjoyed reading the first two books in the series and this, the final book in the trilogy, will answer some of the questions you may have. 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Reference
Criminal Investigation: The Art and Science is an excellent reference book for overall fundamental investigative techniques and specific criminal investigation techniques for specific crimes. I frequently cite the text in the development of law enforcement courses (basic and in-service. The information in the text is current and accurate, which is typically uncommon, as most other texts on criminal investigation simply update a book's cover and neglect the content. I would highly recommend this book as a comprehensive reference book for new and experienced officers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Investigating: what is it?
Criminal investigation is a very poplular subject these days with all of the CSI's and Law an Orders, but what about the facts, what is real? This book is the textbook for my Principles of Criminal Investigations class, part of my Investigatvie Services major in Criminal Justice. It very acuratly illistrates what criminal investigation is about, it is very much about the factual part of invetigations. Also it is not just about investigating the scene of a crime but its very vividly describes crimes and criminals as well as other aspects of the investigation like the psychology and methods invovled in ivertviewing.
This is a must have for any futre investigator.

1-0 out of 5 stars Filled with dry, common-sense dribble...
I can't believe I'm taking an entire class to cover this material. Much of it is common sense, and what's not...is on an elementary level. The book is dry, & I've read 9 chapters in just over a week. It's seriously lacking!

Furthermore, I would have kept my review to myself...except for one thing...the blatant plagiarism from the author! If you read the section on Satellite Assisted Surveillance (GPS) on pages 161-163 and compare it to the original author's (Willing, R., USA Today), you'll see a scary example of what I mean. Lyman cites Willing, but that hardly justifies using ALL of Willing's data & merely changing a few "ands" and "buts." This book is full of other peoples' work...chopped up & slapped together!

It's apparent to me that this author passes other's research and work off as his own. What a joke! ... Read more
