5-0 out of 5 stars Why in This Country Dancing
An excellent, accurate and entertaining account of the interaction between Brazilian music, politics and social structure.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a Travel Tale not a music book for that get.....
Krich's literate yet frequently caustic style may irritate many yet few writers are as capable of communicating the cacophony of third world musical forms now competing for our attention. I very much enjoyed thiswitty book and found its strong rhythm asirresistible as Brazilian music. If you love CARNAVAL few have ever captured the gringo experience in wordsas wellKrich.

2-0 out of 5 stars looking through samba-colored glasses
Well, I have to disagree somewhat with the comments of my amateur book-reviewing collegues. This is not a book about Brazilian music, it's a book about Brazil seen through it's music. I'll agree that as a book aboutBrazilian music, it fails miserably. As a book about Brazil... well itdoesn't succeed, but only because no country or populace in the world cantruly be understood through just one viewpoint. Brazil=music is a handy wayof ttrying to look at the subject, but ultimately as false as any othersingle assumption. Laudibly, Krich is observent enough to write about theharsh realities that lie behind Brazil's image of sun, samba, and mulattas(Therefore 2 stars instead of just 1). Nevertheless, the end result is thesame as if a foreigner wrote about the U.S. as interpreted through jazzafter visiting L.A., Chicago, and New York and then taking a bus tourthrough the Deep South. A good itinerary to write about jazz, but not ifyou are writing about the country as a whole. The base premise defeats thepurpose of the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Book Ever About Brazilian Music
Superficial, lame, irritating and full of mistakes. Why was this even published?

1-0 out of 5 stars Krich Could Have Done Better
This is supposed to be a book about Brazilian music, but it's obvious theauthor knows nothing about the subject. He meets some of the mostillustrious names in MPB, yet asks inane questions or tries to be funny attheir expense. Many times it seems as if he had never heard the music ofthe person he was interviewing. In addition, each page is full of factualerrors and misspelled Portuguese words. If you like Krich's flippantwriting style you may like the book. But if you want to learn aboutBrazilian music, go elsewhere. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad
I didn't enjoy anything about reading this book.I suppose some might say that it was magical and full of whimsy, but I would call it intellectually impoverished, saccharine and clumsy. An ill-begotten disaster prompted by the wedding of an overzealous zest-for-life and literary vapidness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightfully spun tales- Must read!
The author has insightfully spun his very real stories. Everyone can see pieces of themselves and their lives within the tales. Even after reading the stories multiple times, I still found different layers of interpretation within each story. The descriptons the author uses are beautiful! He makes the most mundane, simple things seem so exciting, interesting and beautiful. For anyone who enjoys adventurous, INSIGHTFUL tales that make you wonder about life in a deep way, this collection of short stories is highly recommended. 5 Stars for a creative, insightful new author! ...
