Product Description
The Essential College Professor is about the "how" and "why" of being a faculty member today. Based on the author's series of highly successful faculty development workshops, each chapter deals concisely with the most important information college professors need at their fingertips when confronted by a particular challenge or faced with an exciting opportunity. Written both as a comprehensive guide to an academic career and as a ready reference to be consulted whenever needed, The Essential College Professor emphasizes proven solutions over untested theories and stresses what faculty members have to know now in order to be successful in their careers.

Each chapter is concluded by a short exercise that faculty members can perform to help them, for instance, completely revise a course by restructuring the syllabus and course materials, bring new life to a research project by reframing it as a book proposal or grant application, and so on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "big book"
i found this book to be very helpful once i got past how big/thick it is. it was helpful in breaking down the actual majors, what they the are like and so forth. for a person not sure of what they want to go into...this gives them lots of insight. The listing of colleges that teach that major was very helpful. I will certainly share this with our youth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Majors, Majors, and Just Majors
I really, really liked this book. It provided a detailed description of every major and even provided other majors you might like, prospective courses, and even what you should take in high school. In the back there's every major imaginable (seriously- if you want to study Reiki, it's in there) and every single institution that offers it. Community colleges, four-year, whatever. The best part is that it includes every level from Associates to Doctoral. This book doesn't try to rank colleges or even recommend them. Good job, College Board! ... Read more

Product Description
If your child seems indecisive about college, don't read the riot act, read this landmark book instead. College is not the only alternative. A New York Times editor and concerned parent tells you why and helps you to find happy alternatives to starting college before your child is ready.

As an educated, committed parent, Linda Lee harbored the usual expectation of a prestigious college degree as the illustrious preface to a top-flight career for her child. Some fifty thousand dollars and several disastrous report cards later, Lee recognized that her seemingly rational expectations were proving far-fetched and that her son was simply not ready for college. Moreover, she was shocked to discover that his experience was not the exception but the rule; only 26 percent of students receive a bachelor's degree within five years.

Why, then, are parents led to believe that their children must go to college immediately and that it is the right choice for everyone? If not attending college worked for Bill Gates, Harry S. Truman, Thomas Edison, and William Faulkner, why can't it work for your child and what are your alternatives?

Success Without College is a groundbreaking book that reveals the surprising facts of why many bright kids are not suited for college (or at least not right after high school). Lee's accessible, knowledgeable style informs parents why this should be more a source of pride than shame by providing profiles of students and parents from around the country and their creative, positive solutions to the college dilemma. With a college education now costing an average of a hundred thousand dollars, maybe it's time for American parents to reconsider: Do you really need college to succeed?

2-0 out of 5 stars Linda Lee is All Wrong. College benefits the Person.
These are just evil destructive tactics (by author Linda Lee) in where she wants all of America or most of America not to attend College. If her son, or daughter had problems academically then that is her problem but not Ours. College is fun and is a good learning experience for all. Colleges out there have remedial programs as well as tutorials which will help those in academic needs. I have to admit that many teachers at the institutions that exist in this great Nation of Ours (USA) are in it for the flunking of students, the flunking of pretty girls, etc., because many teachers(who teach at colleges are racist & selfish) and want to be the only ones with the degree (with the Phd diploma) and want no one else climbing the educational ladder of success. What do i mean? Of a student working hard and oof getting graded fairly by his or her teacher and achieving his or her master's degree in the field he or she chose to major in won't happen because the teacher is full of biases. Even though this happens we must strive ahead in reaching that frontier. Many student's out there right now in 2006 get flunked so bad that it forces them to leave college, in where, in the end they get the burger flipping job at McDonald's or at Burger King. Linda Lee should think about this and not encourage students and parents (about one not going to college). Even though i said this, many will not like it but it is the true state of many colleges out there. Next, for example, a youngster who graduates high school can not get a pro job just like that. They need an education(either a vocational skill or a four year degre or more)depending on what he or she likes. We can't have youngsters-boys and girls freshly out of college work at McDonalds, or at Walmart for the rest of their lives. Making minimum wage will not help them find a good mate either. (Hypothetical)For example, is the nice attractive woman who works at amazon.com (and who has a killer body that does not quit) going to marry the local hot guy janitor that works at the Seattle independent school district? The answer is no. That young man needs an education in order to find a good mate. Education helps all in the sphere or spheres of life. There has to be a balance in everything we do in life, and this to involves education. Linda Lee only sees things from her selfish point of view only.
I am an online student graduate, and i feel that all students should go to college because in the short run and the long run it benefits everyone. How? College will refine one, and will get us in the mood to think and read. College will also refine our people skills, our skills with women (in clean interaction/respect).
Like i said, Linda Lee is a fool. If she had it bad then it is her gig, but everyone else should not pay the piper for her chaotic destiny. Linda Lee also has to see the vision of outsourcing as a problem in this nation. So, kids without college degrees and out sourcing going on right now will only hurt those kids. Linda Lee is full of Hate! And that is the bottom line....I don't recommend this b.m. (bowel movement/excrement)of a book to anyone. Getting a college degree is like drinking purified water, everyone should be given a glass with purified water in it-it is everyones right to drink nice clean purified water. Because those who don't have the purified water will only hurt for now and later(relating this example to getting a college education). America wake up! Do you want to cripple your child academically? The educational system is for all not just the few who only wish to be the ones with the knowledge and the diplomas. Linda Lee is all wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent in angst over grad must read
College is not going anywhere.

What do you do when your child graduates? You give them an ultimatum: two options, college or job, right? This book gave me peace and saved me from beating myself up over the fact that my child pursued option number two; a modeling career in California this fall.

Creme rises to the top irregardless as shown through the examples of this book. The fact of the matter is people are born with different temperaments, abilities and ambitions. This book aides the exceptance.

My daughter takes on line prerequisites with our local Florida community college from California (she feels as though she would be a total loser if she didn't due to societal programming). I'm apprehensive to pass this book along to her because I'm afraid she will not develope her innate intellectual nature at some point. That makes this book Rated Restricted to parents...first, then maybe your child, but in my case, not. Still, wonderful quick read and talented author.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dream Come True and Perfect for My Ex-Wife and Three Kids!
Linda Lee has done a very good thing. She's written a concise and much needed book on why it's not so important for kids to go to college anymore. She ignores the fact that colleges have gotten ridiculously simple with all the grade inflation and silly admission policies and instead focuses on how unambitious and industrious young people can thrive in today's environment without the shackles of a college diploma.

This is a very important book and one I have already gift wrapped and placed in the care of the USPS as a special "present" for my second ex-wife (the supposed mother of my first three children).I've been sending the witch too much of my meager paychecks for the past ten years and she's already started yapping about the "college expenses".Thanks to Ms. Lee, I am very hopeful that instead of the ridiculously overpriced college tuition bills I can get by with this much less expensive "guide" to life without college.Who needs frat beer bashes and sorority panty parties? Not my kids. This book will do just fine.Very Highly Recommended.HHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars March to the beat of your own drummer.
Knowledge is free, power is money, the feeling of power = priceless. This is for real people who live on the real earth. College pumps out little robots to go back and forth to work every day.I see it all the time. When I am driving around at 5PM once in a blue moon, I see the suites with the cell phone that serous look on their face driving the Honda in rush hour traffic. Well if that is what you want to do when you grow up and make $50,000 a year and a few small vacations per year be my guest. If you get lucky you may not get a divorce like 50% of Americans in the rat race cycle. It's just a cattle race. Id rather grow my enterprise a big as I can because its fun, I enjoy being a leader. This was a great book more people should read it because I do not want to anyone to tell me how lucky I was to be so successful with out college, I am sick of it. Luck has nothing to do with it. With the human body and a brain you should be able to do what ever you want without college. If I wanted to be an accountant ill just walk down the hall and ask one of my employees to teach me and ill give her a raise. This was a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars To the point
This book has impressed me with the facts presented. I'm a vocational guidance counselor and I have a hard time recruiting students to take one of our technical/vocational programs. Parents are determined from the day a child is born that that child will graduate from college with a four year degree. As the author so well puts it, very few kids are actually suited for college. This book will help me put together a presentation to my students' parents to help them make a well informed decision about their child's education. I can't say enough about how much I have enjoyed this book and how it will help me in my work. ... Read more

Product Description

In the coming year, college graduates will have a more difficult time than ever entering the job market. Opportunities in traditional fields are shrinking as the competition increases exponentially. Despite this glaring truth, far too many post-collegians automatically consider the most visible, traditional careers - usually out of confusion, uncertainty, and peer and parental pressures. Fields like law, medicine, and banking (just to name a few) are often overpopulated, and thus extremely competitive for entry level positions.

In COLLEGE GRAD SEEKS FUTURE, Howard and Matthew Greene will help post-collegians to find their true calling, pursue the field that best fits their talents and passion, and utilize their unique skills to build a career efficiently and effectively. The Greenes explain to readers the highly individualistic nature of choosing a career, the interesting choices that are frequently overlooked, and the imaginative ways in which young adults can identify their goals and take the necessary steps to realize them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Job Search Tool
This book provided some very useful advice on how to identify my strengths and interests. It also opened my eyes to many career possibilities I had not yet considered. The layout and purpose of the content make it an easy read and a great jumping off point for finding the right career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful career advice!
This book is aimed at university educated young adults. This is exactly the type of counsel you need! Instead of the typical guide on how to write a resume or ace an interview, this book is about considering all of the important elements in deciding on a career that is truly a calling, meaning something you want to do and spend your life doing. I first saw the Greenes on PBS a few years ago and their Paying For College advice was excellent. If you're one of the very many individuals who have a degree, but no job...read this ASAP!

2-0 out of 5 stars Worn platitudes, repackaged in pretentious metaphors.
This book initially stood out because it targeted a demographic- highly-educated, underemployed college graduates with liberal arts degrees- that few other career/job books pay much attention to. Although it reaches out to an underserved group, however, the book is basically a collection of the same platitudes that high school and college counselors had thrown at me for almost a decade. If you've just completed a liberal arts career, or gone to any college worth its salt, you're probably aware that most graduates do not follow "traditional" paths in their careers. Many pages in this book consist of nothing more than listings of online resources- Meyers-Briggs tests, career skills tests, more tests than you'd ever care to take. There's even a page that lists sample career services websites for several elite colleges, in case you don't know how to google the site for your own.
The authors take a "literary" tack, comparing the interests and passions that guide one's choices in life to the "thread" that guided Theseus out of the Minotaur's maze. The comparison is quaint at first, then increasingly cheesy, as the authors return to the same overwrought image again and again. What impressed me most about the authors' style was how much they could write without actually saying anything.
This is not a book to turn to for practical advice on finding employment, nor is it a good place to look for straightforward, clear-headed advice on matching your skills and interests to a long-term career. If you're looking for pretentious, airy prose to distract you while you put your $200,000 degree to work at Starbucks, look no further. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in some ways, but in other ways, not so helpful
The College Board Book of Majors gives a thorough and clear understanding of what each major consist of. That was the only thing I found helpful. This book is bigger than it should be. You have to search and search and search for information by weeding out all the other useless words. That was discouraging to me. There are so many other College Board books so look for them before you leap into this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars New and Improved...and User Freindly
As a high school guidance director in a college-prep HS, I was delighted to see the College Board produce a more thorough and useful guide. It's bulkier than the previous "Index of College Majors" but the typeface and layout are easier to manage. The first part of the book (new), provides in-depth explanations of the majors. This section is clearly and conciely written and gives readers a better understanding of what each major involves and where it will lead. Finally, there's a guidebook that combines career/major information and listings, by state, where these majors are offered. It's not cheap so I recommend going to the library or accessing through a HS guidance office. ... Read more

At no time since its initial publication in 1992 has Making A Difference College Guide ever been more timely and relevant. Today’s students increasingly seek ways to influence world events and to shape the world anew. Making A Difference enables prospective college and graduate students to easily find the best colleges and programs to help them make a better world. The author researched hard-to-find, unique as well as prestigious colleges where peace, the environment, social responsibility and service are integral concerns. As an added bonus, many of these colleges are also among the nation’s most innovative, interesting and holistic. There is no other guide that is a source of this information. From environmental colleges located on coastal islands to top Ivy League schools, from a work college in the South to a Buddhist influenced college, from a traveling college on a school bus to innovative state colleges, students find a wide spectrum of inspired choices. Criteria for inclusion include interdisciplinary education, service learning programs, emphasis upon community service, relevant "making a difference" majors, field studies and more. Each edition is updated and revised. This new edition features the use of logos for easy identification of offerings including peace colleges, environmental colleges, organic gardens, eco-dorms, outdoorsy activities and more. 3-0 out of 5 stars light read

As a third year college student, this book was only mildly helpful. I would recommend it as light reading ONLY. If you are about to enter college and want to do some reading before arriving, this book might be helpful. But if you're a student with anxiety and/or depression looking for real help, real answers, and real relief, this book will let you down.

The authors address too many issues. The result is that they sacrifice really expanding on any of them. For example, while you may be most interested in depression -- this book covers everything from sexual education to being upset about graduation or some other irrelevant circumstance.

There are much better books on this subject -- with much more depth. .

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful resource
I first purchased Beating the College Blues, about five years ago, while I was an undecided and depressed college student dealing with many of the issues discussed in this book. Dr. Grayson and Dr. Meilman present frequently asked counseling session questions, culled from their experiences with over 4000 college students, and provide short, concise and USEFUL answers. Topics range from beginning college to life after graduation....and everything in between! There are chapters dealing with academic issues, personal issues, family issues, love and sex, common disorders, and even a chapter on deciding if professional counseling is something a particular reader may want to pursue. Their advice was extremely useful for me and as a future student services professional it provided an invaluable and insightful look into the unique problems encountered by the college population.. Product Description

Adele Scheele, a widely published career strategist, has created a roadmap designed to inspire students to use their time wisely, to help their parents become better coaches to their children, and to empower college faculty and administrators to become more active mentors.

Only a fraction of students actually know how to use college as a stepping-stone for educational exploration and social connection. Most students are keenly disappointed when the expected transformation from college to career does not automatically happen. They do not know that they have to make it happen through their own engagement. Packed with practical and accessible advice, Scheele's approach provides critical strategies to the burgeoning number of students—whether they are children of advantaged parents or children of immigrants, high school students anticipating their college career, or adult women re-entering college after years of working or childrearing. All students are seeking the American Dream, hoping that the secret to success will be included with their diplomas. Launch Your Career in College provides a guide to maximizing the return on their educational investment.

Offering practical and accessible advice for college students, Launch Your Career in College offers a guide to maximizing the return on students' and their parents' financial and educational investments. College is an experiment in hope. It is an expensive investment of time—often more than four years—and of money—anywhere from $4000 to $40,000 per year. Yet the biggest investment, by far, is that of hope—hope that by simply attending college students will be able to turn their majors into successful careers and rewarding lives. Students and their parents expect that college will be the single transforming agent to make them acceptable, valuable, knowledgeable, professional, and employable. Seldom is this expectation voiced, but it is there, deeply embedded in our views about higher education. It is not just hoped for. It is believed to be true. This books can help students, educators, and parents make that hope a reality.

Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to investigate the impacts of multiple enrollment programs on student burnout and academic achievement among technical-vocational college students. The result demonstrates that multiple enrollment programs have a significant effect on student burnout and academic achievement. From the supplier: Indiana Vocational Technical College, also known as Ivy Tech, has a pilot program that utilizes interactive video to teach basic skills and to provide student services that include financial aid counseling and student assessment and placement within the counseling program. Central to the programs are Sony Corp VIEW systems, model VIW-5000, comprising a computer, videodisc player, graphics overlay, sound capability, and monitor. The Basic Skills Advancement Supplemental Program allows students to gain credit hours while improving in mathematics, reading, writing, and studying skills. The Student Services Program, which assists students with career counseling and financial aid availability, provides no credit hours, but gives students better access to these services. Interactive courseware is also available in nine areas, including chemistry and interpersonal relationship skills. Six campuses participate in the program; two of these have implemented cooperative education programs with local industry that expose the college's other offerings to a wider audience.
