Product Description

Due to the mounting demand for energy and increasing population of the world, switching from nonrenewable fossil fuels to other energy sources is not an option—it is a necessity. Focusing on a cost-effective option for the generation of electricity, Wind Energy: Renewable Energy and the Environment covers all facets of wind energy and wind turbines.

The book begins by outlining the history of wind energy, before providing reasons to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. After examining the characteristics of wind, such as shear, power potential, and turbulence, it discusses the measurement and siting of individual wind turbines and wind farms. The text then presents the aerodynamics, operation, control, applications, and types of wind turbines. The author also describes the design of wind turbines and system performance for single wind turbines, water pumping, village systems, and wind farms. In addition, he explores the wind industry from its inception in the 1970s to today as well as the political and economic factors regarding the adoption of wind as an energy source.

Since energy cannot be created nor destroyed—only transformed to another form—we are not encountering an energy crisis. Rather, we face an energy dilemma in the use of finite energy resources and their effects on the environment, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels. Wind Energy explores one of the most economical solutions to alleviate our energy problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview - would have preferred more design content
I think this book has a good overview of wind energy and some of the basic considerations when it comes to designing wind turbines. As an engineering student researching wind turbines, I personally would have liked to see more content on design instead of wind resource and siting.Having said that, the book is meant as an overview intro book, so it contains exactly what is says it does.

If you are interested in much more technical content and wind turbine design, I highly suggest The Wind Energy Handbook, by Burton, Sharpe, Jenkins, and Bossanyi.Depending on how technical you are, it may be much more than you're looking for.

Even though I haven't done any yet, I do like that this book includes end-of-chapter problems. This is beneficial if a course on wind energy required this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars wind energy: Renewal energy and the environment
A very practical and readable book. A more appropriate title for the book would be 'Applied Wind Energy Engineering for Commercial Applications'.Takes a systems approach and does it well. The entire book is in metric units. The chapter on electrical and electronics for wind energy systems is rather limited. A more detailed discussion on control systems would add value to the book. A detailed discussion on wind energy storage systems would be helpful. An undergrauate degree in mechanical engineering with exposure to electrical engineering is desirable in utilizing this book. This book provides opportunities for readers to make innovative contributions in the area of wind energy systems.Detailed bibliography is provided at the end of each chapter. Despite some of the shortcomings, this is a valuable addition to the library of any one entering the field of wind energy. ... Read more

Product Description
In the view of many power experts, distributed power generation represents the paradigm of the future. Distributed Power Generation: Planning and Evaluation explores the preparation and analysis of distributed generators (DGs) for residential, commercial and industrial, as well as electric utility applications. It examines distributed generation versus traditional, centralized power systems, power demands, reliability evaluation, planning processes, costs, reciprocating piston engine DGs, gas turbine powered DGs, fuel cell powered DGs, renewable resource DGs, and more. The authors include recommendations and guidelines for DG planners, and numerous case studies illustrate the discussions. ... Read more

Product Description
As a result of deregulation, the US electric utility industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation with far-reaching technical and social consequences. At the heart of this transformation lies Distributed Generation (DG)-the substitution of centralized electricity production with smaller-scale technologies located in or near facilities and powered by natural gas or renewable resources. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 20 percent of all new power generation will use distributed, not centralized technologies.Distributed Generation: The Power Paradigm for the New Millennium is the first step to understanding the myriad issues that surround the newest, most significant trend in power production since the steam turbine. Chapters contributed by the top experts in their fields address virtually every aspect of this energy "revolution," from its associated technologies to the regulatory environment and from choosing the right DG system for a given purpose to the novel financial and economic opportunities this paradigm shift presents. This book gives engineers and energy business developers their first opportunity to explore and gain a broad understanding of the new energy landscape. With its detailed discussion of the near-term technologies that will see application in the next few years, Distributed Generation: The Power Paradigm for the New Millennium will undoubtedly become the industry's standard reference. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars informative, thought provoking
This is a well written book that should be a staple desk reference for energy service firms, utilities, manufacturers, and consultants.
To me, the implications of today's GT&D have never been more apparent. The book's technical content was presented smartly, while the narrative flowed smoothly. I brought the book onto the boat over the weekend, as an afterthought, but found myself powering through it at 3am. The book reinforced my view that development of a robust distributed generation base sufficient to displace portions of the existing system is not necessarily a technology issue--nor necessarily a competitive issue; the businessplace and legislative mindset must change faster to deal with resource obstacles. For me, the book sparked ideas beyond traditional distributed generation and what was presented in the book: will hybrid automobile and emerging microgrids expose currency card transfer vendors, portal providers, and power traders to new opportunities? After traditional standards do their part, will wireless, file sharing, and OS open standards weave into in an emerging or mature DG marketplace? At which point will the internet-telecom folks begin poking and prodding for a way in? Although the book was a dg book, it sparked a lot of adjacent-development concepts for me; this is what I look for. ... Read more
