Description:
A mathematical model was developed for evaluating CO"2-reduction technologies in power generation, residential, commercial and road transport sectors in Japan. The existing and new power generation technologies evaluated included 34 centralized and 8 dispersed power generation technologies in the residential and commercial energy demand sectors. To take into account the varieties of useful energy and of its demand duration patterns among entities in the demand sectors, the hourly mean power and heating and cooling demand-supply balances in one residential and four commercial representative entities were considered for each month. The road transport sector addressed five types of automotive use. The useful-energy demands are exogenously given; the model calculates the technology installations that satisfy the demands to minimize the total systems cost for each year up to 2030. The availability of the new technologies, i.e., the first years they are installable, is derived from research and development (R&D) process analyses on the basis of surveys to experts. As a result of the model calculation, dispersed molten carbonate and solid oxide fuel cells and onboard gasoline reforming-type fuel cell vehicle (FCV) technologies are expected to have the largest economic values, approximately 60-120 billion constant 1998 yen [460-920 million U.S. dollars (USD)] among the evaluated new CO"2-reduction technologies. One of the implications from our calculations is that extending electric power corporations' commercial coverage to dispersed power generation, in addition to centralized power generation, is desirable to help lower overall costs in society, as well as to secure industry profits. ... Product Description
This book covers all aspects of one of the most important potential applications of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), namely large scale electric power generation. The presentation begins with the basic properties of ionized gases and ends with the performance of power plants. Along the way relevant scientific and engineering aspects of MHD application are considered. Both theory and experiment are discussed and references to ongoing work are provided. MHD, a combination of electrodynamics, fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and chemistry, is a subject of enormous breadth, and often of considerable mathematical complexity. It is used to explain the earth's magnetic field, the aurora borealis, the behavior of sunspots, and the gigantic jets that issues from the centers of galaxies. It is also of use in the ongoing effort to harness atomic energy by means of controlled thermonuclear fusion. This book filters out those aspects of the subjects that are relevant to engineering applications of MDH, specifically to power generation. In the process it also affords insights important for other applications, such as aerospace propulsion. For the person interested primarily in engineering applications, it thus offers a way to learn about a fascinating subject in a concise manner and from a practical point of view. ... Read more

Product Description

Photovoltaics, the direct conversion of sunlight to electricity, is now the fastest growing technology for electricity generation. Present "first generation" products use the same silicon wafers as in microelectronics. "Second generation" thin-films, now entering the market, have the potential to greatly improve the economics by eliminating material costs. Martin Green, one of the world’s foremost photovoltaic researchers, argues in this book that "second generation" photovoltaics will eventually reach its own material cost constraints, engendering a "third generation" of high performance thin-films. The book explores, self-consistently, the energy conversion potential of advanced approaches for improving photovoltaic performance and outlines possible implementation paths.

Product Description

This comprehensive description and discussion of photovoltaics (PV) is presented at a level that makes it accessible to the interested academic. Starting with an historical overview, the text outlines the relevance of photovoltaics today and in the future. Then follows an introduction to the physical background of solar cells and the most important materials and technologies, with particular emphasis placed on future developments and prospects. The book goes beyond technology by also describing the path from the cell to the module to the system, proceeding to important applications, such as grid-connected and stand-alone systems. The composition and development of the markets and the role of PV in future energy systems are also considered. Finally, the discussion turns to the future structure of energy supplies, expected to comprise more distributed generation, and addresses synergies and competition from other carbon-free energy sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful overview
This book is a very useful overview of all levels of PV electricity generation. Topics range from device physics to installation and economics of PV systems to government incentives for promoting solar power. While the book isn't cheap in an absolute sense, it's hard to find such a comprehensive review elsewhere for the price.

Given the book's broad scope and short length, it's no surprise the coverage is a bit thin in places. The device physics discussion is rather brief; you may want to refer to J. Nelson's book "The Physics of Solar Cells" or a comparable work to fill in details. OTOH, there is a very decent survey of materials and manufacturing techniques for inorganic cells. (Organics only merit a couple of pages in this book.) A discussion of the chief reasons that solar modules fail (in Ch. 10) was also quite useful.

Some drawbacks: The writing style tends to be very dull and fact-laden. (The authors are Germans writing in English.) So much information is shoved at you that very few people will be able to recall it perfectly after one reading; but almost none of the topics I found most interesting were in the woefully inadequate index. Also, while Amazon shows a 2006 publication date, the book's copyright page says 2005, and there aren't any references with dates past 2004 (and relatively few past 2002, in fact). A howling factual error in the first sentence of the first chapter (PV effect wasn't discovered by Henri, but rather by Edmond, Becquerel) is an unfortunate blemish. And while this isn't necessarily a drawback, the book definitely has a European point of view, with less information about the North American market and none about the Asian market outside Japan.

If you want to set up a solar power system for your home, this book isn't for you. It's also nearly useless if you want to learn in detail about how solar cells work. However, it could be interesting for engineers and scientists who want to understand the manufacturing, application and business contexts for PVs and solar power. The best audience is probably businesspeople (the proverbial "managers" of so many other book titles), especially VCs, investors and business development types who need a quick overview at slightly deeper than a "Scientific American" level of technical detail. ... From the supplier: Southern California Edison Co. began improving the security measures at its San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in San Clemente, CA, in 1994. The primary thrust of the security enhancement initiative was to protect against terrorist attacks and possible radioactive waste releases. SONGS's security division spent about $2 million in high technology security equipment such as x-ray systems, bomb detection devices and integrated access controls. In addition, the division beefed up employee screening procedures and reevaluated SONGS' entry access layout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is essential for the understanding of how generation is dispatched in the US.Great for engineers beginning in the power industry as well as seasoned professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book
This is the first authoritative and comprehensive text on power system operations and control. The book provides an excellent overview of the basic topics that need to be covered in such a course at either the advanced undergraduate or the introductory graduate level. The improved second edition of the book has been widely used in various power programs throughout the world. I learned everything about "power system operation and control" by studying the first edition of this book in the mid 1980. I have used it as a professor and recommended it to all my students. This book still has no rivals in the market and is the single best source for a text in the subject area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book on Power System Operation and Control
This is the second edition of an extremely well written and carefully thought out book. The material is systematically developed and is a graduate text book which provides a solid foundation in various aspects of power system operation and control. At Iowa State University we have used this book ever since the first edition was published for an introductory graduate course in our graduate curriculum. The book has been extremely well received by our students. It provides detailed analysis of the steps involved in each aspect of power system operation and complements this with excellent examples. The problems at the end of each chapter reinforce the material presented and test the understanding of the student. The diskette which accompanies the book is also very helpful in working the problems and provides rich experience to the student.

This book is ideally suited for the serious student who takes time to carefully read the material, assimilate the material and applies it in a practical setting.

This was also one of the first texts tointroduce several important concepts related to the deregulation of the utility industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic that is the best in its field
This book is a must for any one who needs to learn about advanced topics in Power System Computational Methods with emphasis on generation economics and Control. The examples are extremely helpful to the reader without being overly simplistic. The degree of detail is just about right for the intended audience. The book has been the chosen text for many generations of power system practioners, and is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic advanced textbook on power system operation
I have used the first and second edition of this book for almost twenty years and I believe that it is a classic. It is not an introductory text but all engineers with an understanding of the basics of power systems should find it a very useful introduction to the mathematical methods used in power system operation. I have recommended it to my graduate students and to engineers from industry who were taking a continuing education course based on this text. I am looking forward to a third edition. ... Read more
