Product Description
We talk and talk and talk ... and very often we are frustrated by the feeling that our students simply aren't listening or aren't taking our verbal instructions seriously. It has been proven that over 82% of a teacher's communication with his or her students in the classroom is NONVERBAL. Why should we waste our breath on the classroom process rather than use it for our content? Especially when nonverbal management techniques are so much more effective? This book presents, in addition to a bit of theory, a huge number of practical tips and tools that can be implemented immediately in the classroom and that allow teachers to do what they actually became teachers to do - to teach! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring classroom teachers
Edgar McIntosh and Marilu Peck are two of the most innovative leaders in early childhood education. Their research-based practices, enthusiasm for teaching and love of children are evident in this multisensory approach for teaching reading, writing, and math. The multisensory approach that Edagr and Marilu co-developed helps teachers meet the needs of a variety of learners, and helps students connect to the content of instruction in meaningful ways. Their book has inspired OUR school's teachers to transform their classrooms, rethink their teaching strategies, and take risks with their management styles.Teachers have borrowed so many of their ideas, for example, one First Grade classroom now has a "Family Tree" and in a Kindergarten classroom students frequently role play problem-solving strategies through "Peace Plays." Teachers openly refer to this book as an educational bible-of-sorts! This book is a MUST HAVE for primary classrooms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Our school handed out copies of this book at then end of last year, then brought Bob in to speak to us before this year starts. The book is great, and Bob himself is wonderful.I was inspired and motivated as were others on our staff. If you're willing to make some changes for the better, definitely give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating Classrooms Where Teachers Love to Teach and Students Love to Learn
This book should required for every teacher to read.It has great techniques to get students on your side.I keep it on my desk at school as a handbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gives me a vision of the teacher I can be!
This book gives me a vision of the teacher I can be.It inspires me to reach the most difficult students! It also outlines the SKILLS I need to become that teacher and HOW to reach the most difficult students! It helps me understand that teaching is more than just presenting information, but it is building relationships with students who are sometimes very lost in life and teaching through those interactions as much as through the textbook.Think about it, do you fondly remember the teachers who presented the most information or do you fondly remember the teachers who cared about you, and believed in you? Those that believed in me and cared about me so clearly that I noticed it are in my teacher hall of fame. Those that could care less about me, but taught a lot of valuable stuff, are forgotten and/or despised.I encourage all teachers to read this book and to study love and logic. You will have less anger, hostility and frustration. It will change your career!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love and Logic Down Under
This is a very readable "How to" book written in a narrative style as it follows the experiences of a small, dedicated group of teachers who are attempting to apply the principles of "Love and Logic" teaching. The key to the success of these methods is in developing and expressing genuine empathy for the students in the teacher's care. The book describes the nine essential skills for the love and logic teacher:
1. Neutralising student arguing
2. Using delayed consequences
3. Using empathy
4. Using the recovery process
5. Developing positive teacher-student relationships
6. Setting limits with enforceable statements
7. Using choices to prevent power struggles
8. Using quick and easy classroom interventions
9. Guidingstudents to solve their own problems

There are suggestions of ways teachers can learn these skills to implement in the classroom.Having read the book I find myself wanting to go out and apply my learning in the classroom and to share what I have read with others. This review is an attempt to do so.

To me the book's appeal is to that picture of the kind of teacher I would want to be and then offers some suggestions as to how I might move closer to becoming such a teacher. It's worth the read. Not sure whether it's available in Australia but definitely through amazon.com ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource for Younger Grades
This is really a wonderful book with excellent ideas to use in the classroom. However, it says it is appropriate for third grade use, but it really isn't. It is made more for younger children. I will be able to use some ideas, but I will have to recreate the activities to make them useful for my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for teachers - one thing missing
This is an excellent book for teachers. I saw it about six years ago, the first time in a grade school classroom in Paterson, NJ. It is a book that can help teachers to help children who demonstrate ADHD symtoms be successful in school. So, it is a recommended book.

One thing that I would say is missing in this book is, it does currently subscribe to the medical model, that is, itis a pro-medication book. It really doesn't delve into the controversy of medication at all, but accepts the standard model for treatment. In that respect, I feel, the book falls short.

For the reader interested in another view of this from psychologists and educators, please note the following books. These should supplement Sandra Rief's good work.

Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook

The ADD & ADHD Answer Book: Professional Answers to 275 of the Top Questions Parents Ask

Rethinking ADHD: Integrated Approaches to Helping Children at Home and at School

These three, Susan Ashley's book is more for parents, Rethinking ADHD helps to lay an excellent theory for understanding childhood mental health issues, specifically ADHD, and Overcoming ADHD Without Medication is helpful for parents and for teachers.

This is the Kindle version:
Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook

These, along with Sandra Rief's guidelines in teaching children with ADHD can be of much value for teachers and for parents who want to be more educated on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Every New Teacher
This year 25% of my students are ADHD-Inattentive or ADHD- Hyperactive/Impulsive Type. It seems to me that the number of students I have with this disease is increasing every year. Being an early childhood elementary teacher, so many parents are refusing to medicate their children and would rather have them earn C's, D's, and F's than treat them. Then the parents wonder why they struggle with 2nd and 3rd grade in reading and content area. Most of them are in Tier II RTI.

I purchased this book in order to help me in the classroom and document thoroughly their symptoms, behavior, and compliance. This is a great book! It has given me some good ideas to help my students learn to monitor their behavior. The bottom line is students' learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for educators
How to Reach and Teach Children with ADD/ADHD is a truly fantastic resource for educators trying to best serve children with ADHD.Rief begins the book by demystifying ADHD, writing a succinct summary of ADHD and how it manifests in academic domains. She moves on to sharing suggestions on how to best manage ADHD in different tasks like math, reading, and writing. Her suggestions are research-based and easy to implement.I found her writing easy to read, and I really liked how she interspersed bullet points into the text to clearly and quickly move through a lot of material.I shared this resource with some classmates in my special education master's program, and three ended up ordering their own copies.Teachers, if you purchase any book about ADHD, make sure it is this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent applicable strategies
This is an excellent book.It provides a clear explaination of ADD/ADHD. As well as pratical learning and studying techniques for students with ADD/ADHD to succeed.I highly recommend this book.

Secondary schools are teeming with teens whose attitudes and actions can sometimes be unpredictable, uncalled-for, and unproductive - bullying, cheating, teasing, whining, sleeping in class, shoving, fighting, touching, talking out of turn, showing up late, and failing to do assignments. These familiar problems too frequently disrupt classroom instruction, jeopardize student success, and undermine school cohesion. 5-0 out of 5 stars Creative learning activities for fresh or seasoned teachers
The chairs and desks were empty. The whiteboard was empty. Pens, notebooks, computers, and projectors were out of sight. Conversation, sweetened with chuckles, filled the room as students mingled. From the outside, the scene must have seemed chaotic, uncontrolled, and teacher-less, like recess. But this was 9th grade Oral English, and the students WERE learning.

The unit was about body language and non-traditional forms of expression and communication. The socializing was part of an activity. Students were randomly given one card (Joker, K, Q, 8, or 2), which they had to keep secret, and told to act like that card. For instance, one student had a K, so she was trying to get others to bow to her. Another student had a 2, so he was begging everyone for money. Afterward, by deduction, students figured their classmates' cards. The point of the activity was to interpret body language, but it also sparked an intriguing and informative discussion about perception and socioeconomic status.

This activity is one of many found in McKnight's and Scruggs's "The Second City Guide to Improv in the Classroom: Using Improvisation to Teach Skills and Boost Learning" (2008, 185 pages). The book's cover claims it is suited for "Grades K-8," but I easily adapted it for 9th graders and believe it could even be adapted for undergraduate and graduate students. Despite the grade level, this resource can be applied across the curriculum--and should be. Every teacher must own one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every teacher can benefit from this book
I used many of the techniques described in this book with my eighth grade students and they loved it!They came into class the following days asking to "play more games".Students are tricked into learning with these fun andexciting teaching methods. Even students that were often disengaged or disruptive became involved in the lessons.McKnight and Scruggs introduce innovative methods for teaching important material.I am very excited to incorporate these ideas into all of my future classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best teaching tools ever!
As a new high school teacher, I'm always searching for interesting ways to deliver my material. The last thing I want to be labeled as is "boring" -- a description I admit I've been accused of in my first year, and boy did that sting. But I used some of McKnight's improv techniques during my last day of class, a week after I got this book, and the students absolutely loved them. My teaching partner and I immediately agreed we'd incorporate many more of these techniques next year in our class. I also just signed up for Second City's Creative Pedagogy class this summer.
LOVE this book! Will refer to it time and time again in the coming years.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Gem!
Here's some quick financial advice: Find all the classroom management books you have on your shelf, your books on the "first year teaching experience," your "teaching like the experts" tracks and sell them right away. Then, when you've collected what you can, rush out and buy this wonderful primer. Page makes good on her promise (embedded in her subtitle "6 Simple Steps to Preventing Disorder, Disruption and General Mayhem") and provides for the reader, whether new to the field or an old hand like me, simple, direct, and highly effective strategies for teachers to use in their classrooms.

I can't say enough about how good this book is and how much happier I would have been had I read it before my career began many moons ago. Nevertheless, there is much to recommend here to the journeyman as well. Perhaps most notably, Page never condescends to the reader, eschews gimmicks and the hackneyed exhortations about the importance of rewarding and punishing students, and offers, instead, commonsense, but powerful approaches to helping students act in civil, responsible ways. Her prose is clear and direct and the strategies she presents are wonderfully illustrated by interesting and engaging anecdotes which, unlike most education books, are authentic, often dramatic, and clearly drawn from the author's rich career as a teacher and a teacher educator.

Young or old(er), every teacher really ought to have this book on her shelf.Do yourself a favor and buy it today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning 101
I have been a University professor for more than forty years and when this little book attracted my attention(shear curiosity)I did not expect much. SURPRISE!!! Marilyn Page shows, in a concise and coherent way, how to assure that each and every participant learns.

What is unique and especially noteworthy about this marvelous book - besides its obvious usefulness to K-12 schooling - is its application and adaptability to other fields and other teaching levels. These clear and coherent six steps form the foundation for establishing successful and productive relationships in any group of people, irrespective of age, where the goal is for ALL participants to be involved and learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grab this Book!
If you are strapped for time and want to make some practical and productive changes in your classroom, this book is a must! It's a quick read packed with tons of useful information. The steps make sense, ring true, and have me saying, "Why haven't I thought of that already?"

The teachers' stories make the book very accessible to the educator audience, allowing me to see what has been going on with my own classes. I am ready to make changes in this rapidly approaching school year.

Chapter 6 -Upgrading Interactions: Can you Feel the Heartbeat? - is just plain powerful. You will not only recognize yourself in this book, you will definitely recognize your students as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for the Student Teacher and Mentor

Marilyn Page book really is one of those books they should hand out to every student teacher and every mentor which is guiding them.Marilyn uses her book to tell it as it is, in a nut shell you need to:

Think differently
Consider the needs student and yourself
Look and know your environment

Marilyn uses her vast experience as an educator to show us that we always have had the ability to control our classroom. It is when we start to realize, it is what Stephen Covey calls a "paradigm shift,"to stop cookie cutting your kids, stop using methods you think you know or remember and most of all, care about what you are doing. This book and its six methods follows this theme well.

As I read this I would also urge you to read Markus Buckingham's "Now, Discover Your Strengths" as this book runs in parallel with one of the concepts Marilyn is putting across. You will see the power of strengths and be able to use Marilyn's book to make it happen in the classroom.

I will say that this book is not for the seasoned educator, however, if you are planning on having a student teacher in your classroom anytime soon, it is an excellent reference for this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book- the first review is crazy!
I have worked with children for over 20 years and am now going into teaching!I came across this book while student teaching. It's a great book filled with useful ideas. After you get rid of all your textbooks you will want to keep this book!It packs the experience of years of teaching into a neat litlle book.the comparison to the Chicken soups books is a poor one.I hope the first reviewer has a better attitude with their classroom!

1-0 out of 5 stars NOTHING NEW - A disappointment
I was hoping to find some real advice and strategies in this book but was greatly disappointed. Notice the size dimensions of the book. It closely resembles those tiny "Chicken Soup" inspiration books you buy because you know they're cute because they are full of quotations but you know they don't really give you that much information. It is full of one sentence to one paragraph common sense tips that can be just as easily obtained by talking to the teachers around you, or from any other teaching book with a little more added value. I am returning this book. I may have kept it if it was $3.99, which is what I think it is worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for teachers!
This book is just wonderful for teachers and others who work with children (librarians, social workers, etc.). If you're a teacher, get it and keep it on your desk. When you find classroom life getting boring for yourchildren, open the book and find something to liven it up! The book is fullof reminders for adults, such as how to acknowledge children'spresence/ideas/etc. and make them feel good about themselves and theirwork. I highly recommend this book- the benefits are well worth the smallinvestment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Where uncertainity lies, this book provides clarity!
Called To Teach by William Yount is an excellent book for all interested or gaining knowledge in the field of teaching. It can be used within a diverse assortment of subfields such as Christian Education, Motivational/Inspirational Speakers, Generalized Public Speaking,Private or Ppublic Education, and Trade teaching occupations. It provides the scientific, psychological, and biblical aspects to the foundations of education incorporating the teacher and student and the roles they play as recipients or initiators. The imagery within the book are true to life scenarios so relating to the issues are almost innate.Nyack College has incorporated another book of William Yount and I will not hesitate to share what I have learned from this one. This book should be in every teachers' library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Called to Teach
Called to Teach is not just another book for teaching method, its unique focus is based on the Christian model of teaching. Therefore teaching becomes incomplete when one knows solely on teaching, the key to thesuccessful teaching determines by the heart of the teacher. The effect ofteaching in the Lord can profoundly touch eternity. The key principle ofbecoming a successful teacher is to humble ourselves before God, a lifesubmission. The root of teaching model in book is built on the idea of¡§dynamic synergism¡¨. Dynamic synergism literally means combined elementswith a driving force. The book is consistently focused on three elements ofteaching and learning: heart, head, and hand. These elements areinseparable if one wishes to become a dynamic synergist. One thing I likethe most about the book is its emphasis on the heart of teacher, a heartthat would go beyond just teaching, rather it is a heart for life changeteaching. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool to Plan Instruction
This book consolidated a lot of theory and best practice techniques ranging from Bloom's Taxonomy to Gardner's Multiple intelligences.I was reminded of the varieties of ways to differentiate instruction and the book had great examples and ideas for doing so.This is a great tool to keep alongside your curriculum guides and other planning materials.

2-0 out of 5 stars A little cumbersome and overwrought
Had to buy this book for a class.I was unimpressed. The sectioning, layout, and presentation were cumbersome. There was no new information (for me) and the writing and editing were labored, and overwrought.I'd rather have a little more bottom line, a little less minutia.Even the class instructor was not thrilled with her choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for a new teacher
I love the lists of suggested student products in this book. As a new teacher, I have a hard time thinking of alternative ways to assess my students aside from traditional means. There are several pages that list different activities such as "write a slogan" and "designing a survey" that I would have never thought of and never heard of during my brief training (I was certified via an alternative program). In addition, the author outlines a very straightforward and condensed method for lesson planning that I have found to be very helpful. Explanations are also provided about the importance of differentiation, and there is a nice balance of theory and practicality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
This book is very helpful for my course.I cant wait to also use it when I start teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Textbook w/valuable info.
This book puts insight into teaching the gifted student in the general ed. classroom without breaking the bank. ... Read more
