Product Description
Once, civil engineers were esteemed by the public as both visionaries and leaders in a noble profession essential to the welfare of humankind. Today, though, civil engineers are often seen as mere advisors and technicians. The 21st-Century Engineer argues that this situation must change and that the means to do so are in the hands of engineers themselves. In this groundbreaking manifesto, Galloway vividly paints the new global landscape where megaprojects, sustainability, infrastructure security, and multicultural work teams pose challenges for which engineers may be unprepared. With businesslike brevity, she lays out nontechnical areas in which engineers must become proficient: globalization, communication, ethics and professionalism, diversity, and leadership. Galloway contends that the existing system for educating engineers must change, and she proposes a new master s degree in professional engineering management.A must-read for all thoughtful engineers involved in educating, hiring, and managing, The 21st-Century Engineer is a clarion call to reform the way today s engineers prepare for tomorrow. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Engineers, not M. Engs?
In his recent book "Managers not MBAs" Henry Mintzberg points out the pitfalls of masters degrees taught by management schools but which don't actually help people learn about management. This book is certainly valuable reading, particularly to understand how senior members of the engineering profession are thinking in the USA about engineering education reform. But, is bolting on a management "correction" going to fix the problem with engineers? Masters courses in professional engineering featuring similar content are appearing at many different universities worldwide. I'm not sure that this is the right answer. One of the main problems is that there is no clear models of what engineers really do that really match up with reality so many educators are largely working in the dark. Of course, one of the intriguing things about the whole debate on MBA courses is that the demand for them continues, and so does the belief that they provide a qualification for management. Certainly the recommended content described in this book would be very valuable for many engineers but am not sure that it really solves many of the problems that are eloquently described in the introductory sections of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Witty and poignant!
My Brave Mechanics: The First Michigan Engineers and Their Civil War, is a witty and poignant view of the struggles of the Michigan volunteers from the beginning of the Civil War to its end.

This is the unit that my Great-great-great-great uncle served in from it's inception in 1861 until the war's end in 1865.I found myself caught up in Mark Hoffman's descriptions of the daily life in camp, battles fought, and history being made. I found it very interesting that not only did the volunteers have to deal with poor sanitary conditions, and back-breaking labor building bridges and repairing railroads, they also had severe pay problems.

My Brave Mechanics is extremely well written and a must read for any Civil War buff. ... Read more

Product Description
Civil and environmental engineers need an understanding of mathematical statistics and probability theory to deal with the variability that affects engineers' structures, soil pressures, river flows and the like. Students, too, need to get to grips with these rather difficult concepts.

This book, written by engineers for engineers, tackles the subject in a clear, up-to-date manner using a process-orientated approach. It introduces the subjects of mathematical statistics and probability theory, and then addresses model estimation and testing, regression and multivariate methods, analysis of extreme events, simulation techniques, risk and reliability, and economic decision making.

325 examples and case studies from European and American practice are included and each chapter features realistic problems to be solved.

For the second edition new sections have been added on Monte Carlo Markov chain modeling with details of practical Gibbs sampling, sensitivity analysis and aleatory and epistemic uncertainties, and copulas. Throughout, the text has been revised and modernized. ... Read more
