From the supplier: Logicus' Perfect Copy, a software package that enables students to improve their grammar and proofreading skills, was integrated into an online course offered by Canada's Georgian College. The course, Techniques of Writing and Speaking, was conducted entirely over the Internet. For the class, Logicus developed an Internet version of Perfect Copy, which could previously be run only offline. Students used the software to read online articles and correct grammatical errors in them. The software then sent completed assignments to the course's instructors, who evaluated them. The instructors were able to add new articles and create specialized assignments for various groups of students. Kathryn Cook, one of the instructors, said that she will probably use Perfect Copy in other such courses.

From the supplier: Multimedia mathematics software is reviewed. Knowledge Adventure's JumpStart Math for Kindergartners offers a fun way to teach math fundamentals. The package covers shape and number recognition, data sorting and analysis, addition and substraction, logic and problem solving, measuring, and sequences and patterns. Houghton Mifflin Interactive's Awesome Animated Monster Maker Math, for grades 1-6, asks students to both create a monster hero and solve a case of a missing "monsterpiece" of art from the Rogues' Gallery. Curriculum Associates' Math FactMaster, also for grades 1-6, takes the form of intelligent flashcards in an easy-to-use program. It lets teachers carefully monitor students' progress in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Other packages are reviewed.

From the supplier: Teachers and others involved in children's education should consider talking to children to get their opinions on certain educational software. Aside from being an engaging and enlightening experience, listening to children describe and assess software provides insights on how computers can be employed for learning purposes. In addition, observing children use the software can be an informal form of child-testing particular software. Aside from these information approaches, formal means, such as written evaluation forms, can also be used.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for instructional designers also
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this book was not just for usability experts. If you are an instructional designer interested in children's multimedia, this book is very good.In particular, Chapter 7 reviews the various design approaches: waterfall, rapid prototyping, reiterative process and participatory design through the eyes of a children's multimedia designer.Unsurprisingly, this book attributes these methods to non-ID persons.Nevertheless, Druin's information adds to the wealth of ID knowledge.Hooray for a person who champions the rights of children to have their own opinions about software!
