5-0 out of 5 stars Latest version New and Very Improved
Last year I purchased the DOS version of this program--everyone's right, it was atrocious. However, I just bought the new Windows compatible version and it is outstanding.Very simple to use and I've had directexperience in comparing it with the Dissomaster program that's widely usedbycourts--and the results are consistently the same. Given that lawyerscan charge $100 or more for a Dissomaster run, this program and book are abargan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unable to install software on Windows 98
Dos based software/old formats etc.Unable to use.Without software the book is virtually useless.I would prefer to have my money back.

2-0 out of 5 stars Atrocious software!
This is not a book but a piece of software with an accompanying manual. The software is probably the last piece of pure MS-DOS software still being actively marketed.

The user interface is so bad that it is difficult tosee through to the underlying support calculation software. However, thesoftware does provide you with an inexpensive alternative to sitting withyour CPA or Attorney and paying $200/hr to try various support scenarios onDissoMaster.

But be prepared for an extremely frustrating softwareexperience. ... Read more

Product Description
Today, computers are part of kids' everyday lives, used both for play and for learning. We envy children's natural affinity for computers, the ease with which they click in and out of digital worlds. Thirty years ago, however, the computer belonged almost exclusively to business, the military, and academia. In Engineering Play, Mizuko Ito describes the transformation of the computer from a tool associated with adults and work to one linked to children, learning, and play. Ito gives an account of a pivotal period in the 1980s and 1990s, which saw the rise of a new category of consumer software designed specifically for elementary school aged children. "Edutainment" software sought to blend various educational philosophies with interactive gaming and entertainment, and included such titles as Number Munchers, Oregon Trail, KidPix, and Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?.

Drawing from observations of kids' play, interviews with software developers, and advertising and industry materials, Ito identifies three educational philosophies and genres in children's software that connect players in software production, distribution, and consumption: instruction, focused on transmission of academic content; exploration, tied to open-ended play; and construction, aimed at empowering young users to create and manipulate digital media.

The children's software boom (and the bust that followed), says Ito, can be seen as a microcosm of the negotiations surrounding new technology, children, and education. The story she tells is both a testimonial to the transformative power of innovation and a cautionary tale about its limitations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complex and Illuminating
For me, this book is simultaneously insightful and nostalgic. I grew up playing games like "Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego", "The Castle of Dr. Brain", and "SimCity", so Ito's ethnographic coverage of kids at an after-school program who played such games reminded me of my own childhood, as viewed through the lens of a cultural anthropologist. For instance, while using SimCity's disasters to decimate a city was something I used to do as a kid, I'd always assumed it was a "bad" use of the game, but Ito actually interprets such actions in an entirely different way.

The book doesn't just look at how kids play these games, though. It also examines, for instance, how the marketing of some of these games mobilized middle-class parental anxieties about achievement, or how the entrepreneurs who started educational game companies soon found themselves to be victims of their own success. Or how the entrenched agendas of educational institutions can sometimes work against learning instead of fostering it.

The only thing I didn't like about the book is that because it's written for researchers, it can be a bit jargony at times. For instance, the first 20 pages or so are dedicated to explaining research methodology and what makes it different from other books in the field, which I wasn't terribly concerned with.

Ultimately, though, this book was a pleasure to read, and was complex enough to warrant multiple readings. What's covered in here would probably be useful for parents, educators, game developers, entrepreneurs, cultural anthropologists, marketers, and anyone who, like me, once played these games as a kid.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but dry style makes it hard to read
For a book this expensive, I had high expectations that were ultimately not met. The very dry style of writing made it very hard to read. A subject this compelling should be made exciting--there was an opportunity lost here to deliver the material in a way that would continue to be meaningful over time.

3-0 out of 5 stars A reader enrolled in an HCI class
The Design of Children's Technology is edited by Dr. Allison Druin and authoredby a variety of researchers and experts that lend their experience to the pages ofthebook. The book is easy to read and gives practical examples of softwaredesign methodologies. The Design ofChildren's Technology has pragmatic modelsof step by step guides tomaking software better.Druin's writes about methods fordeveloping andimproving the design of children and adolescent software, however,Ibelieve she could apply many of the concepts to the development of adult software. I wish Druin would have included more statistical data tovalidate that theconcepts outlined in the book have a positive andlasting effect on the design ofchildren's technology. If you areinterested in the software development market, thisbook offers yousuggestions onhow you can enhance your talents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kids designing for Kids
Allison Druin and others in "The Design of Children's Technology" describe in very thorough terms how the processes of how to design for kids are the same, yet different, from how software is developed for adults. The first half of the book explains how manymethodologies that are used to develop adult software work with kids, butwith modifications.Druin and her research group developed another type ofsoftware research that seems to be unmatched in adult software design: technology immersion, bringing users (the kids) together for 5 consecutive10 hour days into an environment of almost unlimited technology.

The2nd half of this book shows us how kids are extremely capable of not onlyparticipating in software evaluation, but also in programming and creatingtheir own software and software for younger children.

This bookclarifies the need for a different way to approach designing software forkids.Kids can and should be involved in creating children's software. They clearly are much more capable to assist, inform, evaluate and createsoftware, and to use that technology, than software designers have thought. Druin has proved herself to be a leading expert in this research and themost of the other writers in this book base their research on her findings.

If you are interested in creating kids software or a teacher wanting topush the envelope of what kids can do with the right technology andsupport, you will enjoy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Customer Service!
I ordered the wrong edition for my class so could not keep the book. But, this seller took good care of that, gave me a refund and all the steps to follow to make my return. Was very happy to know that they did not just take my money or my purchase for granted.

2-0 out of 5 stars Meh
Not a bad book, per se, but it was used in a graduate class. This book would be much better suited for high school kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Getting Better...Even after 11 Editions.
Well-written and unique among child development books.

Bee & Roberts do it again by updating this text with information (i.e. the Theories of the Mind section) that you won't find in many other competitors.

Rosiland Childworth's CHILD DEVELOPMENT and Jeffrey Trawick-Smith's EARLY CHILD DEVELOPMENT are excellent texts if you can't get this one...but this one does a more thorough job of injecting many little details and nuances that stem straight from the primary literary sources of many of the theories.

Great!

1-0 out of 5 stars NO ACCESS to mydevelopmentlab.com
Please be aware that despite the editorial review describing "mydevelopmentlab," a multimedia program that is meant to accompany this textbook, the edition offered here does not come either with the CD-ROM version of the program or with access to the online version. My rating of 1 star has nothing to do with the content of the textbook, only with the misleading nature of the editorial review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Time-Tested Classic
Now in its 10th edition, this book (in order to stay in print so long) does what many other textbook series fail to do: change as the discipline changes.

Child Development (along with early childhood education) continues to accelerate in advances with each passing year...and Brisbane's book stays right with it.

As always, their sections and chapters on parenting rival the very best sources(Ellen Galinksy, Jane Brooks, E.H. Berger, Janet Gonzalez-Mena, Kevin Swick, Chandler & Nita Barbour, and Donna Couchenour). ... Read more
