5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading
Great book for someone who never coached or was a cheerleader.Came in great shape and in timely manner

4-0 out of 5 stars Novice
this book was written for novice teams and beginners. I myslef was an elite cheerleader who competed in places like Disney World with the best of the best so I can tell you that advanced cheerleaders will gain nothing from this. It did help with one of our dance routines on the flip side so thats a plus. I would of liked to see more complicated stunts too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cheerleading Book!!
I recently began coaching cheerleading.I had been a cheerleader in middle school and high school, but that was years and years ago.I wanted to refresh my memory of all the things I learned back then, as well as catch up on all the new stuff, and this book really helped.A great tool!I'm glad I decided on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It sure pleased my 13 year old cheerleader
My daughter has been cheering since 3rd grade in the town cheerleading squad. She does not do competition cheerleading. She also now cheers for the Junior High she attends.I picked up the book as a present for Christmas and she loves it.I don't know how it would be for anyone else, but she thinks it's great. There are a lot of illustrations in it and she is looking forward to maybe incorporating some of the ideas in her High School squad next year.It was reasonable priced compared to some of the cheerleading products out there like the CD's and video sets.Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for all cheerleaders/coaches
As a high school cheerleader, I can say that "The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading" is one of the most updated books available on cheerleading today, unlike most books published in the 80's that have all of those illegal stunts and outdated cheers. However, this is definitely a good book for cheerleaders, which includes

- Steps to starting a team for coaches who are interested in doing so (i.e.: setting up tryouts, enforcing goal setting for your team, judging criteria for tryouts, etc.)

-Tryout info and advice, along with a section to help you decide if you truly want to be a cheerleader.

- Basic motions, cheers, and chants

- Jumps (the great thing is that this book covers all 8 of basic counts for jumps and fully illustrates them with photos)

- Stunting (the most comprehensive stunting section I have EVER seen in a book... starting off with single base, then moving on to multiple base, basket tosses, and pyramids)

- Competition cheerleading

The only minor thing I don't like is that there really isn't anything about tumbling, and as another reviewer mentioned before, the book skips a few basic stunts, and moves straight to more advanced ones that wouldn't be suggested for beginners. However, if you are on an advanced squad, you will probably appreciate all the ideas for more difficult stunts, because they're all covered. But overall, this is a good book for all cheerleaders and covers (almost) everything you should/need to know. It's definitely the most comprehensive up-to-date book on cheerleading today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference for all coaches
I haven't coached in 20 years and this book brings back the basics of cheerleading. From team spirit, good sportsmanship and the sheer athletics of the sport. This is an excellent book for both inexperienced and experienced coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cheer Coaches Bible!!!!!!
Believe it or not I used this book to build an entire cheer team from the ground up. I carried this book around, highlighted, and flagged pages and used the pre-printed handouts for everything. I would have falled flat on my face without it. There are chapters about every possible obstacle, what to expect, and how to run your squad. My squad went from being a "joke" at half-time with 10 people watching to being a "crowd pleaser" by the end of the year with over 100 people coming just to watch my girls. I was very proud and thank God for this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars for american coaches only
I couldn't find much help from this book. However, I'm Swedish and how to start a program here is really different from in the USA. The stunting section was very short. The illustrations to the dancemovements were adequate but sometimes not enough descriptive. There are other books out that will tell you the same things, and more. I recommend "the ultimate guide to cheerleading" by leslie something.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a first-time coach, but
A must-have for all coaches. There are a fair variety of motions and jumps depicted, but they are drawings rather than photographs. Also, there is no visual depiction of how to prep for a jump, and this book starts you off with a thigh stand instead of stag stunts but there are stunt variations here not shown in "The Offical Cheerleaders Handbook" or "The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading" and the photographs lead you pretty much through the whole sequence.

Also in its favor it does have great tips on:

*forming a team

*keeping on top of your legal responsibilities

*developing a practice plan

*reaching out to parents and the community

*building up your members' self-esteem

*evaluating and tweaking your program

My advice is to buy this book in conjunction with the other two mentioned above to get the most knowledge of cheerleading basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Cheerleading Successfully

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cheerleading guide I've ever seen!
This is an excellent bookby Headridge and Garr. It's really helpful for us coaches because it brings information and photos about procedures as well as documents for every purpose, such as parents' permission forms and others.
I do reccomend this book. Purchase it without fear, either if you are a new coach or an experienced one.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful for beginners
This book is helpful for coaches that are working with young programs or are just starting a program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any first time coach, or long time coach that needs improvement.
I am a first time coach, and this book has been a true gift for me! Every idea is wonderful and the printable forms have been so helpful. I wish I could say more, but I have 19 girls waiting for me to begin practice right now. A practice that will be organized, consistent and well worth their time thanks to Pam's book.

Sincerely,
A Cheerleading Coach from Washington State

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the Top
This book is a completely comprehensive look at coaching a cheersquad. It is not specific to the United States, so most of the suggestions, strategies and helpful hits can be used in countries outside of there (for me specifically Australia). Just starting a squad is must less daunting with the assistance of this text, as it clearly lays out an idiot-proof way to work through each step. Thanks heaps!!

Product Description
Cheerleading has come a long way since its beginnings at a Minnesota football game in 1888. Then, all you had to do was stand and yell; today, cheerleading is one of the nation’s most popular pastimes (over 80 percent of US high schools have cheerleading squads), a challenging physical activity whose participants train at different levels on teams and camps year-round, and a competitive sport covered by ESPN. Cheerleading is the first and only book on the market that goes inside the sport itself, to tell cheerleaders (and aspiring ones) what they really need to know: How do I get started? What kind of camp should I choose? What do I need to do to make a varsity, college, or All-Star team? What are the new trends, techniques, and stunts? Written by the editors of Inside Cheerleading magazine, this book gives cheerleaders, coaches, and even mascots the inside edge not only on techniques and choreography, but also on competitions, types of squads, style and attitude. The book features contributions from inspiring role models, including Lawrence Herkimer, the father of modern cheerleading, Sarah McDaniel, three-time national champion cheerleader, and Ryan Martin, a current high-school cheerleader and star of the Lifetime reality show, “Cheerleader Nation.” ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent cheerleading book!
This book shows motions, jumps, and cool cheer routines. This book is a great supplement to any cheerleaders library of cheerleading books.

This book also comes with pom pons, so you can practice using pom pons when cheering.

5-0 out of 5 stars great beginner to intermediate book
This book was a great reference for my daughters who are interested in trying out for cheerleading. The week long cheerleading try-out camp at school is pretty intense and with this book at least they will be able to learn some basics.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Boring Cheerleading Book
I have been cheerleading for several years and just starting coaching. Being a first time coach I figured that this book would have given me new ideas and reminded me of things that I forgot, but I learned nothing from this tiny book. When I say tiny, I mean 119 small pages of just space being taken up by really boring material. If you already know the basic motions, don't buy it. If you done a couple chants before, these chants are just unoriginal and just not exciting. We are cheerleaders! We're not suppose to put people to sleep. They give you examples of some cheers with motions, but its so boring. The jumps that they show you in here, you could figure out for yourself. BUT if you are a beginner and you want to know how to do some stuff, go for it, but don't try out with this material. You'll put the coaches and the team to sleep. This is no good. Anybody could have whipped this book together in an hour. Lame, lame, lame. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many Suspects!
This is the review of my eight year old daughter, who loves Mary Kate and Ashley enough that she checks out all their books at the library and begs me to buy them in the store.

Who ever knew that Cheerleading Camp could be so vicious? Someone is trying to sabotage Ashley in her quest to become the square leader for the Cheerleading Camp. Who was doing it? You were given so many suspects that it was impossible to know. You were given 1 clue as to the true villain and that was clue was misleading. It's no surprise that the ending was a surprise!

It was a Mary Kate and Ashley book and that almost got it 4 stars alone, but she just didn't think it was good enough for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explorations of social subconscious erudite but inchoate
I was amazed by the depth of character development and the allegory presented in this learned thesis. Its brilliance in appearing as a novel for adolescence is soon usurped by the clever machinations of the protagonist which belie the stories darker, yet socially important, nature. This work has opened up a whole new world of understanding regarding the subconscious stratification of social oligarchies in secondary institutions of education.Any would-be existentialist would be remiss if they did not read this (or the original work in Latin).
While somewhat hard to digest if perused flippantly, meticulous and seriatim analysis of this tome will ameliorate its initial opaqueness and even aid the most recalcitrant misanthrope to gain an incisive, if abstruse, vignette into the potential of the human psyche.

5-0 out of 5 stars not just for girls
This is a great little mystery book.I just read this to my 7 year old son who is a mary kate and Ashley fan.

This mystery kept us both guessing til the end.Just when we thought we have it figured out the twins found more clues!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!
This book was so awesome.I finished the first day I got it!...I really enjoyed this book and I think that you will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Case of the Cheerleading Camp Mystery
I thought this book was great. In this book Ashley wanted to to be captain of the cheerleading team but 3 other girls wanted to also.So they had a vote. That's when Ashley started having problems.Someone stole her lucky pom-poms. Someone had written nasty cheers for her.She found itching powder in her sneakers. And that was just the beginning!Someone was trying to make sure Ashley lost the vote-no matter what! My favorite part of the book was when Mary-Kate and Ashley kept think some one did all of the things to Ashley, they find clues that lead to someone else!To find out what happens next and who wrote the nasty cheers, who stole her lucky pom-poms and who put itching powder in her sneakers, read The Case of the Cheerleading Camp Mystery. ... Think this book could help you be a better Cheerleader because there are different sections that help you for example they have a section that is for shaping up, making the squad, leg work and more. I also liked how you have me tips. one thing that I didn't like was that they didn't give a lot of moves that you can try. I thought this book could help cheerleader's get into shape and also lean some tips that are helpful for Cheerleading try outs.

Product Description
When self-proclaimed geek girl Bethany Reynolds becomes the newest member of the varsity cheerleading squad, she realizes that there's one thing worse than blending into the lockers: getting noticed. Who knew cheerleading was so hard? Well, at least there's a manual, The Prairie Stone High Varsity Cheerleading Guide. Too bad it doesn't cover any of the really tough questions. Like, how do you maintain some semblance of dignity while wearing an insanely short skirt? What do you do when the head cheerleader spills her beer on you at your first in-crowd party? And how do you protect your best friend from the biggest player in the senior class? Bethany is going to need all her geek brainpower just to survive the season! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars takes me bacvk in time
At first I thought reading a young adult might not be my cup of tea, but to my surprise it was a really a fun read. The characters were well developed, interesting, and almost too real.I knew those kids when I went to high school.I knew those situations all too well. The authors either remembered or did their homework.A well crafted fun read anyone of any age might enjoy.I look forward to their next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this modern, teenage take on Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this novel, as I haven't read a Young Adult novel in quite some time. I did however get snagged by the title. The rest of the book kept my attention from the first chapter to the end.

Bethany is... well she's a geek! And she's proud of it, which I loved about her. So often we hear about young women who just want to be someone else. Bethany was perfectly happy in her geekdom... well, except for having to run The Gauntlet. Nope, not gonna tell you, you'll have to read to find out what I'm talking about. When Bethany's best friend Moni, a fellow geek, convinces her that the two of them should try out for the Varsity Cheerleading Squad she is willing to go along for the ride, all in the name of supporting her best friend. Thinking that they'll be denied a spot on the squad she is a bit stunned when they both make the squad. What follows is a rather funny, and emotional journey into another world... at least for her.

Bethany was a rather interesting girl, who didn't always understand what was going on around her. While perceptive to a point, she was a bit unsure of how to deal with changes in the familiar as well as behaviors of her friends. Let's face it, that's not something we magically grow out of, at least this young woman is smart enough to admit to herself when she has no idea what is going on. I felt for Bethany as she navigated a completely alien territory with quite a few stumbles, and even some bruises, but she came out on the other side a better person, and amazingly a pretty good cheerleader.

Jack is the star of the high school basketball team and he has a reputation... for never dating. It didn't matter what "type" of girl she was, he doesn't date her. My feeling was that he wanted to be with someone who could be themselves and who he could be himself with. He just hadn't found that person, so he waited and just didn't date. He seemed like a sweet enough kid in my opinion and we are eventually given a lot of backstory as to what has happened in his life to mould him into the person he was. I saw hidden depths in him, and it's not always easy to find depth in a teenaged boy.

This book deals with some issues that are unfortunately things young people have to deal with. When does the desire to be cool and one of the in-crowd lead to completely undesirable situations? What can one person do to change things and take a stand? Sadly, these things do happen in your average everyday high school. Some issues brought up were peer pressure--to laugh and make fun of others in lesser circumstances, but the hot one was underage drinking. I will make it known right now that I was pretty proud of the way Bethany handled it. Other than that issue, which greatly added to the story, I can't think of anything that would give others pause.

This dynamic duo of authors display a dry humor that had me snorting out a laugh on more than one occasion. Each internal monologue was thoroughly believable, and I could see myself (at that age at least) thinking the same thoughts, or saying those same things. I liked that Bethany was a relatively responsible young woman. I know that it can be hard to step forward and say something, even when you know that it probably won't change anything.

Again, let me say, that I loved this book. I would recommend it to any youth and parent (and I already have recommended it because I enjoyed it so much) in the market for humor, a sweet bit of romantic courting and the desire to revisit that world again. Aside from a minor slip, these two main characters had me laughing out loud one more than one occasion. A great read, and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for teens and adults
I loved reading this book. It's like a modern Pride and Prejudice story written primary for young adults but I enjoyed it a lot although I'm not longer a teen.

Bethany is pretty happy with her life. She has great friends, she loves her family and enjoys school - at least the classes. Because she is a geek her social status at school isn't very high and people more often than not laugh about her. When her best friend Moni (another geek) decides to try to get in the varsity cheerleading squad Bethany is there to support her. But when both girls make the team things change a lot. Nobody at school is ready for geeky cheerleaders and both girls have to go through some hard times. Not only the popular kids but even the other geeks aren't happy with the girls. Everyone wants them to get back to what's "normal": geeks only concentrating on geeky things and not on popular stuff like cheerleading.
But Bethany is not ready to stop because she has worked hard to become a cheerleader. And when she and her crush Jack (one of the popular boys)finally become a pair life seems to be perfect.
However when Moni changes and beliefs into lies told by others things get very complicated and hard for Bethany. All of a sudden she has lost both her boyfriend and her best friend but thankfully some old and new friends are there for her.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Bethany is a great heroine. She's an intelligent and honest person who doesn't really care about being popular. She's also a great friend and doesn't understand why her being a cheerleader changes so much. Her personality never really alters throughout the book and that's just great because she's one of the few persons in the book who is truly happy with her life and who she is.
What I also enjoyed is that the book shows that most people don't like changes of certain things. It's not only the popular kids but also the geeks who aren't happy with the "new" Bethany.
The relationship between Jack and Bethany is very sweet and it becomes clear that although Jack may be popular his life is hard and not so happy compared to Bethany's.
The book emphasizes that it's not really important to be popular but to stay true to who you are and to stand by your friends.IMO that's a great message not only for youths but also for adults.

4-0 out of 5 stars Geek Fun
This book was cute.It got much better the second half. Two geek girls join the cheerleading team to gain popularity. It works, but there are consequences, naturally.I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to anyone looking for light reading that takes place in high school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Every girl needs a Jack Paulson :)
I'm a romance junkie...so if you are like me and love those sappy, stories where the unattainable boy falls for the slightly geeky girl this one's for you! I really enjoyed it and read it in about a day :)

Product Description

Cheerleading has become a staple in American culture. The cheerleader straddles two contradictory symbolic poles. This individual is an instantly recognized figure representing youthful attractiveness, leadership, and popularity. Yet, for many, the cheerleader is seen as epitomizing mindless enthusiasm, shallow boosterism, and objectified sexuality. This contradictory view is explored in this extensively documented book. Cheerleading issues include: the changing patterns of social class, age, race, and gender of participants; its development within professional sports in the early 1960s and its relation to mass media; the evolution of its style and content; and the meanings, values, and symbolism associated with cheerleading within American culture.
