Product Description
Germany has a wealth of magnificent palaces and castles, rich in art and history. Photographed by Paolo Marton and described by a team of local scholars, this collection of photographs records an incredible number of architectural styles, from the Gothic severity of Schloss Gattorf to the fin-de-siecle madness of King Ludwig's Bavarian castles. Many, such as Berlin's Charlottenburg and Wurzburg's Residenz with its splendid Tiepolo frescoes are popular tourist sites. Others, equally grand, are relatively unknown. Here are enchanting pavilions, beautiful formal gardens, magnificent interiors and their priceless contents. The book also contains an introduction to the princely states, maps, a glossary and a bibliography. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Prussian and Bavarian splendor
Really a thorough book, it seems to hit all the important castles and palaces and does a wonderful job of spending more time on the more important buildings. The pictures are very good, though I do agree with the reviewer that stated the book needed more exterior photos, allthough I still would not have rated it a five star book, but definitely four and a half. In order to have gotten five stars the author would have need to have focused more on the great palaces and much more time on Potsdam and Bavaria. This is a subject that needed and got a fine assessment.I recommend it to anyone who is interested in European architecture at it's best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good photos and writing
This is a great book, good photos and loaded w/ info. The only thing that I think would make it better would be show more pictures of the exterior of the palaces because some palace photos are all interior so you cant seewhat it looks like from the outside, but this is only on a few palaces. Overall, this is a great book and I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could.

5-0 out of 5 stars German Castles And Palaces
I love this book. The photography is just fabulous. If you ever wanted to know what the GermanCastles and Palaces look like, or are planning a trip to Germany and would like to see some of them, this is the book for you! Also, the history is very informative. I just can't say enough for thisbook! I am an artist, and I have never seen such an artful display of artfrom a bygone era. WOW! ... Read more

Product Description
The first book in English to consider these fortifications in detail, this book describes the major fortified lines built during the 1930s in Germany and neighboring nations in response to France's construction of the Maginot Line. Using drawings and descriptions, the authors assess the military necessity and usefulness--or lack thereof--of these popular fortifications. Many designers attempted to copy some of the better-known features of the Maginot Line, but often the defenses consisted more of propaganda than of concrete and steel. Nonetheless, when Germany stood poised to attack, the fate of Europe hung on these fortified lines. ... Read more

Chapters: Wies Church, Sanssouci, Charlottenburg Palace, Chinese House, Castle Solitude, Wessobrunner School, Cuvilliés Theatre, Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces, Brühl, Amalienburg, Palais Holnstein, Frederician Rococo. Excerpt:Exterior The Amalienburg is a small hunting lodge constructed in 1734-1739 by François de Cuvilliés for the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VII and his wife, Maria Amalia of Austria , in the park of Nymphenburg Palace in Munich and in the eyes of many experts, it is the finest example of the German Rococo . Architecture The Amalienburg was built and designed between 1734 and 1739 for the Electress Maria Amalia. It was designed by François de Cuvilliés who helped make the Rococo the most important style of the first half of the 18th Century, between 1738 and 1756, by publishing many books on subjects such as interior decoration, wall panelling, ceilings, furniture, wrought-iron work, and other decorative subjects. Most of the ground plan of the interior layout is given over to the round Hall of Mirrors in the center of the building which was designed by Johann Baptist Zimmermann and Joachim Dietrich (1690-1753). It creates an ethereal atmosphere in the Bavarian national colors of silver and blue. Other rooms include the Blue Cabinet (the bedroom of the Electress) and the tiny palace also accommodates a kennel room for the hunting dogs. The kitchen is decorated with precious tiles from Delft which when put up, were mixed up when they were being laid by workers who thought they had the right order. The Castrol stove (1735) constructed for the kitchen is a masonry construction with several fireholes covered by perforated iron plates. It is also known as a stew stove and the first design that completely enclosed the fire. Gallery The Rear Façade The Front Façade The Fr... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start if you're interested in European castles
My 4th grader and I first discovered this book at the local public library. This book is suited for elementary grade children, though I found it equally informative and nostalgic for an adult. It's easy to read, has an interesting account of the history, royal personality and effort that went into the building of this fairy tale castle. The timeline provided is also helpful in relating the castle to past and present day events. The glossary at the end helps explain the meaning of foreign words and pronounciation.

We like the balance of information, beautiful photos and bits of related trivia which are a good introduction for anyone new to this topic. This book sparked our interest in finding out about other castles, especially in this Castle, Plalces & Tombs series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Children
This is a book for children but adults will find it interesting. It gives basic information about Ludwig. The cut aways that show how the castle is laid out are great. When you visit it is difficult to tell where you are inside related to the outside. This puts the building in perspective.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!
I thought this was going to be an informative book on this wonderful castle, but it has been dimished to a child's fairytale that tells you absolutely nothing about Ludwing or Schloss Neuschwanstein. Has a few pictures, not that great. It's like twenty pages, and even a child would call it lame. DO NOT BUY! ... Read more

Product Description

Today’s mobile robot perception is insufficient for acting goal-directedly in unconstrained, dynamic everyday environments like a home, a factory, or a city. Subject to restrictions in bandwidth, computer power, and computation time, a robot has to react to a wealth of dynamically changing stimuli in such environments, requiring rapid, selective attention to decisive, action-relevant information of high current utility. Robust and general engineering methods for effectively and efficiently coupling perception, action and reasoning are unavailable. Interesting performance, if any, is currently only achieved by sophisticated robot programming exploiting domain features and specialties, which leaves ordinary users no chance of changing how the robot acts.

The purpose of this volume - outcome of a GI-Dagstuhl Seminar held in Dagstuhl Castle in June 2006 - is to give a first overview on the concept of affordances for the design and implementation of autonomous mobile robots acting goal-directedly in a dynamic environment. The aim is to develop affordance-based control as a method for robotics. The potential of this new methodology will be shown by going beyond navigation-like tasks towards goaldirected autonomous manipulation in the project demonstrators.

Product Description

With the growing ubiquity of computing systems, it is essential that we can rely on the services they deliver. Justifying reliance in computer systems requires scientific techniques to derive evidence from given systems or predict such evidence. This tutorial book gives an overview of the current state of the art in measuring the different aspects of dependability of systems: reliability, security and performance.

The main impulse for this dependability metrics project resulted from a research seminar, held at Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany, in October/November 2005. The 25 chapters, based on the outcome of the research seminar, are organized in five parts on foundations, reliability metrics, security metrics, performance metrics, and overlapping metrics. The final part shows that only a combined consideration of important dependability attributes will lead to the design objective: the development of systems we can really trust.

Product Description
The area along the Weser was very prosperous economically between the Reformation and the Thirty Years War, so there was a great deal of building activity. Renaissance castles, aristocratic estates, town halls and civic architecture here were little affected by he effects of war or modernization. They have survived in very large numbers, and the quality is very high. The present volume offers a representative selection of the region's castles and palaces. Architecture and court culture are placed in a European context that goes beyond older approaches based on the stylistic history and shows that forms demonstrating princely prestige have qualities in common well outside the region. ...
