3-0 out of 5 stars Great Source!
Some of the web links published in book don't work, but otherwise you type in program information, and eventually find the info!!! GOOD BUY:))

1-0 out of 5 stars Another useless book
A total waste of money. Perhaps the first chapter and one or two others with some information. But the schools are pricey and for the person who truly seeks an inexpensive trade alternative to the way-overpriced 4 year university, there is little useful information. Most chapters are on pet grooming, pet massage, alternative therapies and other nonsense certificates. Perhaps one chapter on anything someone with money might be willing to pursue. A book with this title should be useful to the person who truly seeks or needs to seek a viable trade. What about learning to be a shoemaker, and real apprenticeships, etc? The person who is not literate, is learning disabled, who truly seeks a "trade," a skill using the hands, this book is useless.Again, this is the last time I will be influenced by "reviews."

4-0 out of 5 stars Better information than I expected
Ok, so this book wasn't a life changer; but it did in providing me with useful information. The book begins by warning you that it can be easily dated, because programs come and go.I think as long as you maintain that reference, a lot of information can be gathered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Re-title this book!
This book should have been titled "You're Certifiable....Job Opportunities IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA".I thought it was a fabulous book, but truly, it's not much use if you don't live on the West Coast.

5-0 out of 5 stars For someone looking for a personally fulfilling career
I bought this book for the 21 year old daughter of a friend. She had dropped out of college, complaining that nothing there really interested her. I discovered this book while browsing amazon.com, ordered it, anddecided it was perfect for her. After she looked through it, she decided toapply for a school that taught animal massage (she's been crazy aboutanimals since she was a child). She completed the program and is nowhappily working at a local kennel offering massages to companionanimals.

The book lists about 700 other alternative career programs, covering 10 other areas ranging from crafts, arts, outdoors interests, healing, etc. The programs are described succinctly and information isprovided on how to follow up. In the beginning of the book, the authorsprovide a nice introduction to the whole concept of alternative careers(how to find what interests someone, etc.)

Really, it would be aworthwile gift for someone who is looking for a way to make a living thatis a little "different", but personally gratifying. ... Read more

Product Description
School-to-career (STC) programs, which integrate academic education and vocational skills training, seek to improve the transitions of young people from school to work. The School-to-Work Opportunities Act (STWOA), passed by Congress in 1994, provided more than $1.5 billion over a five-year period to support increased school-to-work activities in the nation’s public high schools. However, after its initial five years, STWOA was not reauthorized. In this report, the author uses a national dataset to measure the success of various programs (including Tech Prep and Career Academies, which differ from the STWOA activities). He finds that certain STC activities do promote postsecondary enrollment and employment and that a case can be made for funding the types of programs supported by STWOA. However, he also notes that there is a pressing need for a serious evaluation of the effectiveness of the specific activities remaining in California and of any that might arise in the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Teen's Guide to College
This is a great book. What I like most is that there are (non-overwhelming) sections my son can read on his own. The organization is quite easy to follow and very comprehensive. Part I focuses on "You're going to be a freshman". This is a good place to start but not obvious to all authors who write books on preparing for college. Some of these books might cause anxiety attacks because they are so focused on every move you must make from day 1 to get into college. This book actually tries to prepare kids (and parents) with what to expect when they get to High School. There are messages throughout the book written specifically for the students and some written just for parents. There are "advice" boxes throughout written by students, admissions officers and guidance counselors. I ordered 7 books on preparing for college and this one ranks in the top 2 for me! Writing sample from Chapter 1 (You're Going to Be a Freshman): "You have to speak up for yourself. In middle school, your parents probably helped you if you got into a tough situation....They were the ones making the phone call or visiting the teacher. In high school, there will be times when you will have to deal with situations on your own, such as speaking with a teacher about homework...you have to develop the ability to get advice from your parents, figure out how to solve the problem, and then take action." ... Product Description
A volume in Issues in Career Development Book SeriesEdited by John Patrick and Grafton Eliason, California University of PennsylvaniaCareer Development in the Schools describes a dynamic process that continues to evolve in itsrationale and practice. In many schools and in a variety of scholarly writings, the status of careerdevelopment is controversial. Some observers assert that career development should be seen as aby-product of all of the knowledge and activities that are incorporated in the educational experience. In this view, career development tends to be seen as a random process that happens in anatural, almost magical way, without specific direction or structured form. However, most careertheorists would argue that the career development of students should be a major mission of theschool—a process too important to be only a by-product of scattered learning and activities thatare inherently uneven from student to student. The prevailing contemporary perspective contendsthat career development in the schools should be planned, have its own content derivedfrom research and theory, be systematically executed, and use methods that are relevant to thedevelopmental levels of students throughout elementary, middle, and senior high schools. Tofurther such ends, several national models of content and practice have been formulated by the American School Counselor Association, the National Career Development Revised Guidance Project, and by other organizations to identify the components, competencies, and outcomes that students of different ages and aspirations need to acquire as they grow in maturity. Several of these models are discussedat length in the various chapters of this book. ... Read more
