Books on this interesting character are not plentiful, therefore it was a must for my library. How reliable are the facts provided? Jeffery gives the impression that Kitchener was victor over the Mahdi in 1898. Elsewhere I amled to believe the Mahdi died soon after Gordon. Did anyone proof read thisbook? This book was used as volume one of the Chronicles of Canada series, a thirty-two volume set of short, easy-to-read books pertaining to Canada's history and heritage.The Dawn of Canadian History is intended to set the stage for the series, and discusses in a general sense the primordial beginnings of Canada, theories on how the continent was populated by native peoples, the possible accidental visits by the Vikings, and early explorations by the Europeans.Keep in mind that the book was first published in 1914 and therefore contains much dated information.Leacock's opinions also at times reflect those of his contemporaries and are clearly now not acceptable.All in all, though, an interesting little book, worth reading despite its faults, especially if you're into Leacock and want to experience some of his non-humorous writings. ... Valuable book
I purchased this book by a recommendation from my friend. after reading this book.....its amazing, smooth & easy. If you start to read the first pages of this book, you will not stop till you end it.

A very decent book for those who know next to nothing about Canadian History.
For a novice, or a person, who is interested in History, this book will be a must-have. It narrates all Canadian history (almost up to present days) in a humorous easy-going way. However, there is one consequence to reading this book - most likely you will need some visuals (which the book lacks entirely - for a good reason), which will prompt you to use more serious works on Canadian History.
Summarizing: this book is very nice for an overview, for ppl, who don't want to just touch on the subject (raising my hand), and for kids!!!

This guys' a really good writer (like he needs my approval)!
I can't believe a history book is so much fun to read.As a Canadian who has been living in the US for 45 years I thought I should try to be a little more literate about my native history.I felt he really cut through the BS and gave a fair look at Native, French and English sides of the story.It's actually a page turner, who would have though?

An Excellent Overview of Canadian History
I've been exploring Canadian history quite a bit over the past few years, starting with picking up "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Canadian History" by Ann Douglas and the CBC's "Canada: A People's Hisotry." I found Will Ferguson's "Canadian History for Dummies" to be a humorous, fact filled, and very current overview of Canadian history (I bought it six months after it came out). I find it to be a very welcome addition to my book collection.

Very Good, But Could Have Been Better.
I purchased this book because I've long wondered why that portion of Canada south of the St. Lawrence River didn't get lumped in with the U.S. colonies. That question was answered, along with a lot of others. Very enjoyable, clear, concise with a bit of cheek. Would have given it 5 stars except for one glaring shortcoming-- Where are the maps? This is after all a "Dummies" book.Its readers by definition aren't familiar with the places being discussed. Some maps would have been very useful to put the narrative information into context. ...
