Book Description

Scott Flansburg's heartfelt belief is that there are no "mathematical illiterates," just people who have not learned how to make math work for them. But millions of otherwise successful adults are afraid to balance their checkbooks and don't know how to figure interest on savings or credit. Millions of students dread their math classes and live in fear of the math section of the SAT. But, as Scott Flansburg demonstrates, anyone can put these phobias to rest and deal with essential everyday mathematical calculations with confidence. In Math Magic,Scott Flansburg shows the reader:

  • How to master the basics;

  • How addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division really work;

  • How to simplify calculations through estimation;

  • How to quick-check your answers;

  • How measurements work and how to quickly convert metric measures to more familiar ones;

  • How to figure tips and taxes and be sure you're getting the right change;

  • How to figure percentages; and

  • How to master algebra using the nine easy steps to algebra.

Math Magic is for all of us who need and want to improve our understanding of math. Flansburg makes math what you may never have imagined it to be: easy and fun. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Math Magic + = MINUS
This book promises a lot but delivers very little. The guy who originally sold them was a great salesman, He even got on Opera once. But after buying the book I don't see why. Very little ofit was interesting or of value. The books are poorly laid out, poorly explained and even worse are the illustrations. I bought them with high hopes to help my child with math. We tossed them aside after one quick read. If you need to learn or teach math get a Spectrum Book. These were nothing more then a waste of money. I always look and find something good about everyone and everything. I found a great use for these books. Not only do the pages line the bottom of a bird cage nicely, they also make great fire starters. To sum it up, don't waste your money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Teaching Kids!!!
This book is inadequate to explore the concepts that it puts forward, and the reader will not be able to use it effectively until they go through and fill in the wide gaps left by the author. The techniques within it are not universal to all numbers, and the author fails to mention this on numerous occasions. All in all, this book was designed to make money, while offering the illusion of "cheating" your way through math. Some methods within it are useful, while others only overcomplicate, and ultimately undermine, standard education techniques for mathematics, the standard way oftentimes being the more accurate, and quicker, way to do the examples within. Math is hard, sure, and that does make a lot of people hate it, but this book will make you hate it more, at least until you figure out what a scam it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book even though it comes up short in some areas...
I wanted to read this book ever since seeing the infomercial of Scott doing his thing on tv. I couldn't afford or justify the expense to buy the big commerical package so this book had to do. The methods are easy to follow and Mr. Flansburg does a good job expressing his mind set in how he mentally did the problems. The basic addition and multiplications methods are good but the examples were insufficient when dealing with mixed numbers of different lengths. There were also exceptions to many of the rules that weren't expressed. Finally, the last part of the book with special rules were so numerious it would take a year to effectively learn and apply them all from memory. This leads me to believe that Mr. Flansburg didn't tell everything he knows, like the quick way to determine change -- by changing say ten bucks to 9.99 and subtracting that from the amount owed; then add one cent to get the correct change. It's easier to subtract 9 since its the highest value you can have in each column. This was presented by him on a night time radio show he was a guest on. I do give him prasie for getting people young and old to stop depending on calculators and learn mental speed math.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boost for Math Dummies
A reading of this book quickly reveals our public education system as stodgy and nonprogressive.If you or anyone you know is having problems with math of any kind, please spend a little money on this book before spending a ton of money on tutors and such!If I'd had this book, or been exposed to the information therein, when I was in k-12, my math scores would have been much higher!

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written book
This book is well written and easy to read. It is a really great book and gives insights into various interesting methods to calculate rapidly. However, Mr.Flansburg and Ms. Hay seems to claim that these methods are either theirs, or Japanese. Theyfail to give proper reference. This preposterous misrepresentation is possibly due to their sheer ignorance or intentional need to hide the real source. In reality, these fast methods were invented during the Vedic Period in India around 400 B.C. One can refer to all these and more methods in "Vedic Mathematics or Sixteen Simple Mathematical Formulae from the Vedas", by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthanji at Amazon.com. Nevertheless, the credit should be given to these authors for putting these concepts in a easy to understand format and encouraging kids to learn math.... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars In search of a better guide
This book was too basic, and it hopped around too much.I am still looking for a good "how to" book on using these calculators.I guess I would have preferred a workbook of problems.Perhaps a workbook would help me harness the full power of a financial calculator.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tries to cover too many bases.
Every book is worth something, this one included. However, you need to get specific in a book as to the calculating device covered. In this book the author seems to be trying to expand her market by covering way too many devices, devices that are in conflict with each other as to keystrokes and the like. And, we dont need anyone to tell us how to make "Effective Use of a Financial Calculator": nobody has "the" answers on this point.
If you have the HP-12C--a very competent device--, consider Mr. Tirone's "Professional Real Estate Problem Solving Using the HP-12C" as well as Mr. Coffin's "Easy Course" on the HP-12C. If you use the HP-17BII (I have this calculator and love it) and if you work in real estate or just want to strut some things on the device, consider Mr. Tirone's "Professional Real Estate... HP-17BII" along with Mr. Coffin's "Easy Course" on the HP-17BII.
As far as trying to master or even learn one of the TI financial calculators, "get real": save your $$ and your time: get the HP-12C or the HP-17BII or possibly the HP-19BII. You will never go wrong with any of these devices.

2-0 out of 5 stars Word of Warning
I purchased this book with the intention of enhancing, believe it or not, my efficiency on a financial calculator.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU HAVE A HP 10B, HP 17BII OR A TI BAII PLUS.

I didn't so it was fairly ineffective, you can pick up little tips here and there but you are better of having a good read of the calculators owners manual.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is average at best.
This book is average at best. I was expecting to see more visual aids (ie graphs, etc) to help explain the formulas. It's not real bad and you can find all of this information on the Internet. ... Read more

As of late 1996, this is the most readily available collection of writings of Charles Babbage, the discoverer of the principles on which all modern computing machines are based. Includes passages from his autobiography, and more technical writings about his "Difference Engine" (the subject of a great science fiction novel by Bruce Sterling), an essay on lockpicking (proving that the MIT hackers of the 1950s were not the precedent-setters they might think!), and even uniquely 19th-century passages such as a descrition of how he transported six blind salamanders while travelling around Europe. An essential volume for anyone seriously interested in the history of the computer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super duper learning resource for the TI-89/92/voyage200
After using a TI-84 for a while, I upgraded to a TI voyage 200 because of the calculus capabilities.When I got my new Voyage 200 (v200), I was not happy with THE DOCUMENTATION SUPPLIED BY TI, that came with the calculator.So I bought Carl Swensons book "Graphing Calculator Guide for the TI-89, Calculus single and multivariable," to get up to speed on using my v200, because I was told that the TI-89, TI-92, and Voyage 200 all operate the same way.After a couple of sessions using Mr. Swenson's book, I became very excited about my new calculator and his book!Indeed, aside from some differences in the keyboard layout on the three calculators (TI-89/92/v200), they all three work the same way, and I easily used Swensons book for the TI-89 to learn how to use the voyage 200!Obviously that book was written with all three calculators in mind!So if you bought one of these calculators, you have a great calculator, probably the best there is, and in my opinion, you should get a great book to go with it, namely Swenson's "Graphing Calculator guide for the TI-89," which is equally applicable to the TI-92 and TI Voyage 200. ... If you own a TI graphing calculator (whether it's a TI-83/84, 85, 86, 89, 92, or 200 Voyage) chances are you are not getting the most out of your calculator. You'd be surprised at how much your TI graphing calculator can do. If you've somehow obtained one and don't have a manual, get one. Trust me, you'll probably have a day where you want to do something complicated and not know how to do it or where to find the function in the calculator. The information age has made statistics one of the most important branches of mathematics. It should be explored using real data from interesting and current sources. Using this book, students enter real data onto spreadsheets or into statistical plots on the TI-84 Plus while you guide their learning and help them draw appropriate inferences.Keying sequences guide them through the labyrinth of statistics menus on the TI-84 Plus without the need to page through the calculator manual. Detailed solutions at the back of the book help students over obstacles to their learning and the application of various statistical techniques accessible on the TI-84 Plus menus and submenus are absorbed with minimal effort as the concepts of statistics are explored. Programs are included to perform experiments such as those applied in Monte Carlo investigations.Historical vignettes are included to add a human dimension to the mathematical excursions. The topics included are statistical inference, data graphs, central tendency, measures of dispersion, correlation, regression lines, statistical distributions such as the normal distribution, the Central Limit Theorem, sampling, Monte Carlo methods, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.The probability density functions for the binomial, normal, t, Chi Square and F distributions are defined and their properties are explored in terms of their application to tests of hypotheses. New explorations in sampling techniques and inference have been added to the previous edition for the TI-83 Plus. For those with the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, this book includes references to the statistical simulations involving coin and dice tossing experiments found on the Applications menu. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential item for Corporate Finance or Real Estate Classes
This book is an essential tool for corporate finance classes.While the textbook that I used, "Corporate Finance" by Stephen Ross, Westerfield and Jaffe was clear and concise, it did not give any instructions on solving the problems in any way except algebraically.Calculators are an essential tool and if you need any help in connecting those formulas to calculator inputs, this is your guide.

The book is short, but sweet.It includes instructions and line by line inputs for HP 10BII and two other basic models.

You learn how to calculate the basics of NPV, Bonds & Stocks, Mortgages, and Statistics using your particular brand of calculator.

The book is an excellent value for the money! ... Read more
