    Extractions: By Barry Guy 25 years seems an absurdly long time to keep a band going, but then there have been exceptional attractions in doing so. Two abiding and powerful forces have promoted this continuity: The constantly evolving creativity of the musicians and my desire to research an expanded scenario for the large ensemble. In those early days I was greatly encouraged by my composition professor Buxton Orr. Such was his interest in my ideas and crucially, his understanding of the impetus behind the musicians' experiments, he eventually directed the orchestra for several years. Also his work as composer, conductor and teacher prepared him for many weary hours coaxing the pieces into life. «Ode» was my first score written to address the problems of integrating improvised music within a large tableau of symphonic proportions. The first performances produced glowing notices: «remarkable and impressive»; «technically awesome creation»; « a work of astonishing brilliance» and so on. There was also a great deal of adverse criticism - «lunatic music»; «merciless noise»; «a long way from Satchmo, Benny, Bix and Duke, too long a way». Well yes, it meant to be a long way from those great pioneers, but some folks always miss the point!

In the Classical field he has worked with artists such as Erich Gruenberg, Joji Hattori, The Smith and the Bingham String Quartets. Other projects have seen Jonathan work with Dave Stewart and Sarah Brightman as well as frequent appearances on television and radio. Raga Yaman and Coco-Bhangra are two of his composition in the Indo-Jazz repertoire. Sandip Chakravarty - tabla - began playing from an early age and formerly trained in Calcutta from 1984. In 1992 returned to London to finish his schooling and expanding his musical influences within various forms of Western and Asian Fusion. 1994 performed at the Albert Hall to represent Newham Academy of Music and then on to perform in Europe and America with local and overseas artists. 1999 nominated to be part of "Asians in the Millenium" and voted to be youngest Asian performer at the Albert Hall. James McDowell - flute started playing the flute at the age of eleven. When he was fourteen he began to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Junior Dept, with Judith Hall and Mary Ryan. Went on to study at the Birmingham Conservatiore with Chris Steward and Elena Duran, from which he graduated in 1996. Now a freelance musician both teaching and performing regularly across England and abroad. He has also worked with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, both on live broadcasts and sound tracks for BBC television and radio.

Nicknamed "Duke" by a boyhood friend who admired his regal air, the name stuck and became indelibly associated with the finest creations in big band and vocal jazz. A genius for instrumental combinations, improvisation, and jazz arranging brought the world the unique "Ellington" sound that found consummate expression in works like "Mood Indigo," "Sophisticated Lady," and the symphonic suites Black, Brown, and Beige (which he subtitled "a Tone Parallel to the History of the Negro in America") and Harlem ("a Tone Parallel to Harlem"). Beginning keyboard studies at the age of seven, Ellington's earliest influences were the ragtime pianists. He taught himself harmony at the piano and at 17, made his professional debut. Encouraged by Fats Waller, he moved to New York in 1923 and, during the formative Cotton Club years, experimented with and developed the style that would quickly bring him worldwide success and recognition. Ellington would be among the first to focus on musical form and composition in jazz using ternary forms and "call-and-response" techniques in works like Concerto for Cootie (known in its familiar vocal version as Do Nothin' till You Hear from Me ) and Cotton Tail and classic symphonic devices in his orchestral suites. In this respect, he would influence the likes of Monk, Mingus, and Evans.

Studies at the College of the Pacific and with Milhaud at Mills College led to the founding, with fellow students, of the experimental Jazz Workshop Ensemble which recorded in 1949 as the Dave Brubeck Octet. Later, in 1958, the combination of Brubeck with drummer Joe Morello, double bassist Eugene Wright, and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond quickly achieved an overwhelming popular success as the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Quartet's experimentation with time signatures unusual to jazz produced works like Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take Five , introducing millions of enthusiastic young listeners to unexplored regions of jazz. The group recorded and performed together continuously through 1967. As composer, Brubeck has written and, in some cases, recorded several large-scale works including two ballets, a musical, an oratorio, four cantatas, a mass, works for jazz combo and orchestra, and many solo piano pieces. In the last 20 years, he has organized several new quartets and continued to appear at the Newport, Monterey, Concord, and Kool Jazz Festivals. Brubeck performed at the White House in 1964 and 1981 and at the 1988 Moscow summit honoring the Gorbachevs. He is the recipient of four honorary degrees, the BMI Jazz Pioneer Award, and the 1988 American Eagle Award presented by the National Music Council.

    Extractions: Film Music on the Web may well know him better for his film career ranging from 1949's The Sun Comes Up to Rollerball in 1975. His score for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1960) is particularly celebrated, yet in total Previn worked on 71 films either as composer, arranger, orchestrator, song-writer, conductor or pianist. Meanwhile both classical and cinematic worlds may be equally surprised by Previn's jazz career - though this part of Previn's life does warrant 123 pages in Martin Bookspan and Ross Yockey's (Hamish Hamilton, 1981). The truth is, jazz has always been important to Previn, and though The Penguin Guide to Jazz by Richard Cook and Brian Morton only goes so far as to allow that he was "more than just a dabbler", in the 1950's he played with Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Dizzie Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald and wrote/arranged for Count Basie, Woody Herman and again, Benny Goodman. After a long break Previn returned to jazz in the late 1980's, recording "After Hours" (1989), "Uptown" (1990) and "Old Friends" (1991) for Telarc. More recently he has teamed-up with bassist David Finck, who himself played with Woody Herman, recording an all-Gershwin album, "We Got Rhythm" and an all Ellington disc, "We Got It Good and that Ain't Bad" as well as performing together live. This current album, recorded at The Jazz Standard Club in New York in October 2000 is Previn's first live jazz release since "Live at the Musikverein" with Mundell Lowe and Ray Brown.

    Extractions: Terence Blanchard, who is a fine film composer in his own right ( Malcolm X is his most important credit), has arranged nine jazz classics from the film music repertoire and the result which is presented on this album is highly interesting. Covering more than forty years - from Alex North's 1951 milestone A Streetcar Named Desire to Blanchard's own 90's score Clockers - Blanchard takes the original themes one step further and make them into lengthier, somewhat emancipated jazz tunes. According to the press material, Jerry Goldsmith's reaction to Blanchard's take on Chinatown was enthusiastic and I can understand why. With a lot of respect for the original material, Blanchard's arrangements - and indeed his own, sensitive trumpet playing - adds a new dimension to the themes. Almost all of the pieces begins with a traditional rendering of the theme, which is followed by a improvisational part with solo performances by Blanchard and other soloists such as saxophonist Joe Henderson and pianist Kenny Kirkland. Of course, you'll have to be a jazz lover to understand what's going on here, but if you're interested in hearing what can actually come out of a free interpretation of such jazz standards as Bernard Herrmann's

    Extractions: In our day and age it is rare that any single "classical music" concert event can find itself caught in the web of a contemporary cultural and political crisis. We have come to regard concert life and the music of the concert hall as essentially matters of entertainment and aesthetic taste, entirely divorced from the nasty world of politics and social conflict. Even though there are some who welcome this sort of distance in terms of history, this has not always been the case. Musical life has been a significant part of political life. Chopin, Verdi, and Wagner are perhaps the most obvious examples of composers who regarded their work as vital to a community defined precisely in terms of its politics. This concert was planned in the knowledge that over the past quarter-century a painful strain in the relations between Jewish Americans and African Americans has developed. However, the extent of the hate and deception exhibited in recent months was not anticipated. It is hoped that this concert can contribute to the current political debate by presenting a moment of history when matters were different. Not nostalgia, but rather the exploration of different models from which to draw inspiration for the present and future is at issue here. The composers on this program born into Jewish families who integrated African-American materials in their workGershwin, Gruenberg and Goulddid so in ways which earned the respect and admiration of their African-American contemporaries and colleagues. The composers of African-American descentPrice, Ellington and Kaywho integrated European traditions with African-American traditions, did so in ways which earned the respect and admiration of their non-African-American contemporaries and colleagues. There is perhaps no better indication of these reciprocal relationships than the use made by Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and others, of Gershwin's theme, "I Got Rhythm."
