In this visual history—the Hanley brothers’ most extensive book yet—readers will trace many towns’ humble beginnings, with wooden-frame structures lining rutted dirt streets teeming with wagons, horses, and mules. The evolution of towns such as Walnut Ridge, Bentonville, Little Rock, and Lake Village, as well as tiny hamlets such as Black Rock and Ponca, unfolds before readers’ eyes. Scenes from the 1950s feature stores such as Ben

Franklin, OTASCO,and Western Auto.Success stories of Main Street preservation and revitalization in El

Dorado, Siloam Springs, Conway, and Harrison show how local elders have set an example for other towns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique View of Arkansas
Steven and Ray Hanley are the ultimate as collectors of old postcards. Their knowledge in this area translates into a fascinating social history in their new book, Main Street Arkansas. Dozens of images show how towns all across the state of Arkansas developed and how the concept of "the main street" was central to business and social life. If you grew up in Arkansas, or have relatives there, you're going to want to add this book to your collection of family history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for those who want to better understand Arkansas or who just love the state
Arkansas is a state which much of the country doesn't truly understand. "Main Street Arkansas: The Hearts of Arkansas Cities and Towns - As Portrayed in Postcards and Photographs" provides a glimpse at the state throughout history that many can't even pronounce properly. Using postcards as snapshots of history and the main street of its city, it provides a unique picture of the state's advancement, with a focus up to World War I. "Main Street Arkansas" is a must for those who want to better understand Arkansas or who just love the state.

4-0 out of 5 stars A View of Life Differnces
I have truly enjoyed this book. I had hoped to locate more information about the author. When you have background information on the author one has the tendency to interpret the book in a different form. However, this was a very interesting and detailing book about rural and urban areas. It gives the reader a broader understanding of segregation, political views and disfranchisement legislation in Arkansas during the 1890s. ... Read more

Product Description
With America on the brink of the largest number of older adults and persons with disabilities in the country’s history, the deceleration in housing production during the first decade of the twenty-first century, and a continued reliance on conventional housing policies and practices, a perfect storm has emerged in the housing industry. The lack of fit between the existing housing stock and the needs of the U.S. population is growing pronounced. Just as housing needed to be retooled at the end of WWII, the American housing industry is in dire need of change today.

The South—with its high rates of poverty, older residents, residents with disabilities, extensive rural areas, and out-of-date housing policies and practices—serves as a “canary in the coal mine” for the impending, nationwide housing crisis. Just Below the Line discusses how reworking the policies and practices of the housing industry in the South can serve as a model for the rest of the nation in meeting the physical and social needs of persons with disabilities and aging boomers.

Policy makers, designers, builders, realtors, advocates, and housing consumers will be able to use this book to promote the production of equitable housing nationwide. ... Read more
