In the western social structures, the number that sleep more disturbedly permanently increases. So, already more than 10 per cent of the population suffer from sleep awake disturbances which has to be treated urgently; 800,000 patients suffer under Sleep apnea and 25,000 under Narcolepsy (Peter 1995, Peter et al. 1995). Product Description
Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. There are two distinct forms of sleep apnea: Central and Obstructive. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of effort in Central Sleep Apnea, but from a physical block to airflow despite effort in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In Mixed Sleep Apnea, both types of events occur. Regardless of type, the individual affected with sleep apnea is rarely (if ever) aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognised as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes, or is suspected because of its effects on the body. This volume offers new and valuable research developments. ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the outlook for apnea monitors in Asia & Oceana. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the countries in Asia & Oceana). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E. for apnea monitors in Asia & Oceana. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the national markets of Asia & Oceana. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars sleep apnea
I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?
This book includes just about everything one needs to know to learn about sleep disorders. It allows you to test yourself at home and explains all of the different "treatments" available. However, none of those treatments boasted any substantial cure rate. The subtitle of the book "A Proven program for conquering snoring and sleep apnea" makes me ask the question "What is the program? Did I miss something?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful.
Thank goodness we were able to stop my husband's snoring.

1-0 out of 5 stars nothing new here
Lose weight, stop smoking, drinking, coffee, become a veggie, yadda yadda. Nothing interesting or new here. I wish I hadn't wasted the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Information on Oral Appliance Therapy
Victor Hoffstein, MD, PhD, is truly one of the most respected international authorities in the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. His book "No More Snoring," coauthored with distinguished medical writer Shirley Linde, PhD,covers all that a layman need know about the subject. It is well organized and written to be an easy read. It is accurate and reliable in all areas except treatment with oral appliances.

The information on oral appliances is inaccurate and misleading. For example they classify the Nocturnal Airway Patency Appliance (NAPA) as a tongue retaining device (TRD), which tugs on the tongue all night, and many patients find uncomfortable. The NAPA is definitely not a TRD. It is a mandibular advancement appliance (MAA), which most patients find much more comfortable to wear and more effective.

Then they say the first MAA was used in Germany in 1986.A 1985 report in the New England Journal of Medicine described how a NAPA had reduced the number of stopped-breathing episodes in a middle aged man from 79 per hour to 5 per hour.

As a very important aside, the above mentioned patient received his first NAPA in Honolulu in 1983 and has been wearing one nearly every night for over 17 years. ... Read more

Product Description
Are your doctors doing all that they can to keep you in good health? Have they ever investigated the possibility that you may have sleep apnea, a condition whose incidence has reached epidemic proportions? Probably not, because most doctors don’t do that screening routinely, although they certainly should. The long-term consequences from sleep apnea are wide-ranging and very serious, even life-threatening. And resolving sleep apnea can greatly reduce your risk of their occurrence. If your doctor doesn’t take steps to protect you from sleep apnea, then you need to take those steps yourself.

This is the book that lays out for you what to look for, what to do, and why it’s so important. It’s easy to read, and so informative. You will learn what to do to protect yourself and your loved ones from the perils of the sleep apnea epidemic, a necessity for maintaining good health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Sleep Apnea
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea recently and got my CPap less than a month ago.I am pretty upset about this condition and am reading everything I can get my hands on to try to understand it.So far I have read most of the books on Amazon that cost under $50.This one is far and away the best in my view.Mr. Abrams has clearly put a brilliant mind and hundreds of hours of scientific research into his book.He was motivated because he has sleep apnea, but it took his background as an engineer to enable him to understand and relate scientific studies to the condition.I like this book best because it is not blinded by the conventional sleep study "wisdom."All to often doctors think in small "approved" channels and sleep apnea, which is an overwhelming topic, is falling in to this "controlled" "conventional" thinking, I fear.Mr. Abrams has connected scientific papers, analyzed them, and has come up with some very important and unconventional theories that I think are fascinating and well worth considering. So far, his theory that hypercoagulability, gout, and ventricular arrythmia are often a product of sleep apnea, may save a life in my own family!Best book on the subject so far.I have purchased over 10 copies and am distributing them to doctors and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking addition to the basic research
I agree with the other reviewer that this book doesn't cover everything about sleep apnea. For me, it makes a connection to all kinds of other medical problems I never knew about and encouraged me to check them out.

If you want to learn all about sleep apnea and how it works, buy something else. But if you want to learn more than the standard "sleep doctor" story, or you are worried about someone who may have sleep apnea, buy this book too. ... Read more

Product Description
If you have sleep apnea, think you might have it, or know someone who does, this book is for you!

Sleep apnea is a relatively new subject in health care. It is very common and is associated with many other medical conditions, particularly high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. However, awareness about sleep apnea is lacking, and misconceptions are common.

It is very easy to pass off the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea. Most people with this condition don’t even know they have it. This is very unfortunate because effective, even life-transforming, treatment is available. The consequences of untreated sleep apnea are wide-ranging and can be devastating.

This book is a concise, illustrated, practical, and readable guide to this common and potentially serious condition. The reader will learn about when to suspect sleep apnea, what other conditions are linked to it, why it is important to detect it, how to get tested for it, and what to expect if treatment is required. The book is written by a doctor who is involved in the care of patients with sleep apnea and many of the health problems that go with it.

Product Description
Snoring is the effect of strange breathing noises that takes place as you sleep. These noises are due to a difficulty in breathing which is caused when there is blockage to the airways. People who have mild snoring problems do not have sleep disturbances at all. They can snore all through the night while asleep and feel completely rested the next day. Sleep apnea, on the other hand, is a serious health condition, that causes sleep interruption.Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that's closely related to snoring. In sleep apnea, there is a blockage to the throat. The airways completely closed off while you sleep and so the lack of oxygen to the lungs causes you to wake up. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause serious oxygen deprivation to the body and affect energy levels significantly. People who snore or have sleep apnea may have these signs and symptoms in common:* Snorting or gasping sounds during sleep* Low energy, tiredness, sluggishness* Concentration problems * Difficulties with memory retention* Irritability or being short-temperedIf snoring or sleep apnea is affecting your health and lifestyle to a great extent, then it is best to consult with a doctor to get the right evaluation and treatment immediately. For mild cases, it may only require a few simple changes like losing weight and improving sleeping habits. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars will help you find out the link between snoring and sleep apnea
Through this book I found out that snoring can be an indication of sleep apnea, which can be a life-threatening sleep disorder. It is a good basic guide about the link between the two sleep conditions. It gives information on causes and remedies and cures so you can discover a treatment method that can be effective for you.

I found the book full of details on snoring causes and treatment options. I especially like the discussion on the trigger factors because I was made aware of my own actions and lifestyle habits that may be the cause of my snoring. With this book's help, I went into the process of reviewing my lifestyle, jotting down my sequence of actions everyday for a week, established patterns and removed trigger factors. I still snore but not as consistently as before. My wife actually said there was one night I didn't snore at all.It is becoming more irregular as each night progresses. It is no longer straight snoring all throughout the night.I credit this book for providing me with an effective self-help plan of action.

Product Description
Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disease associated with significant morbidity and use of health care resources. Therapy with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices has low risk and a potentially large benefit in treating this disease. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently issued a memo revising their earlier position that authorized payment for CPAP only if formal polysomnography (PSG) was performed and was diagnostic for OSA. The revised memo states that CMS will be pay for CPAP therapy for 12 weeks (and subsequently if OSA improves) for adults diagnosed with either PSG or with unattended home sleep monitoring devices. The use of portable home monitoring devices can greatly increase access to diagnosis and treatment of OSA. However, these devices must be used as part of a comprehensive sleep evaluation program that includes access to board-certified sleep specialists, PSG facilities, and therapists experienced in fitting and troubleshooting CPAP devices.
