Product Description
"Bestiary": is a compendium of animals or birds, real or mythical, with a description of their habits and appearance. Most important to a "Bestiary" is the religious or moral lessons that each animal can teach people. In this context, the book seeks to build on the traditions of the medieval "Bestiary" and considers the unique animals of the Alberta Mountains and foothills. From the perspective of a rancher who has an intimate knowledge of the landscape and animals, the feel and texture of natural life are illuminated in prose that is both stirring and humorous. With the author's sensitivity to the rhythms of the land, the animals and the heavens, the reader is drawn into the natural world where connections to historical knowledge underscore a passionate concern for the environment and humankind's responsibility to the world we share with all creatures. ... Product Description
Kinematic Systems in Geodesy, Surveying, and Remote Sensing provides a state-of-the-art discussion on the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in combination with Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) for detailed sensing of the Earth's surface. Divided into two parts, the book first discusses GPS/INS with respect to theory and modelling, equipment trends, estimation methods and quality control, algorithms, and software trends. It then describes the applications of these kinematic systems to positioning and navigation, modelling and measurement of gravity, gravity gradiometry, and altitude. This collection of 63 presentations documents the symposium of the same name held in Banff, Alberta, September 1990. It is the sixth volume of the International Association of Geodesy Symposia series published by Springer-Verlag New York. ... Read more

Product Description

The discovery of a 5000-year-old Sun Temple and an ancient "time machine" - Stone Age calendar - in Canada led scientist Gordon Freeman to ground-breaking discoveries in Stonehenge. During fieldwork and research from 1986 to 2006, Freeman found striking similarities between the surface geometry of the two sites. These similarities push back the boundaries of written history and have far-reaching implications for North American and European history.

"Passion and science blend in this remarkable, readable book, as Freeman takes us along on his patient and exciting discovery of a 5000-year-old Temple in the plains of Alberta. What he finds at the Majorville Medicine Wheel in turn informs his convincing account of Stonehenge archaeoastronomy."
-- Roald Hoffmann, chemist and writer, Cornell University, 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

"A fascinating chronicle of a scientist's investigations in two of the world's most intriguing ancient sites, Stonehenge in Britain and the Majorville Cairn and Medicine Wheel in Alberta, Canada. Freeman reveals that 5000 years ago, Britons and Plains Indians made precise astronomical observations at these sites, halfway around the world from one another, at nearly the same latitude. Canada's Stonehenge adds the flavour of the Canadian prairies to important new discoveries of Neolithic science."
-- Alice B. Kehoe, Professor of Anthropology, Marquette University, worked with Astronomer John Eddy at the Moose Mountain Medicine Wheel

Gordon Freeman was born in 1930 in Hoffer, Saskatchewan, and was introduced to Stone Age artefacts at the age of six. His father collected stone projectile points and stone tools from the Saskatchewan prairie after dry winds had blown away tilled soil.

He obtained an M.A. from the University of Saskatchewan, a Ph.D. from McGill, and a D.Phil. from Oxford. He is a Chemical Physicist, was for ten years Chairman of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Alberta, and for thirty years Director of the Radiation Research Centre there. He is now a Professor Emeritus. For forty years he has pioneered interdisciplinary studies in chemistry, physics, and human societies. Interdisciplinary is now the standard approach to understanding in the sciences and humanities. He has published more than 450 articles, and two books.

As a hobby he visited many archaeological sites in Canada, the United States, Britain, Ireland, Europe, and Asia. In 1980 he discovered a 5000-year-old Sun Temple in southern Alberta and has studied it ever since. In 1989 he took observation techniques he had developed in Alberta to England, to resolve the controversy that existed about a possible calendar in Stonehenge. In Canada's Stonehenge, Freeman displays the astonishingly beautiful, ancient calendars in southern Alberta and Stonehenge for the first time in recent centuries, with far- ranging implications for international prehistory and history. ... Product Description
Explosive economic growth in resource-rich Alberta has led to a stunning increase in its population. In contrast to Ontario and British Columbia, which have grown primarily through international migration, Alberta has become a magnet for internal migrants, contributing to population redistribution within Canada, with significant national social and economic consequences. Combining statistical analysis and ethnographic study, Harry Hiller uncovers two waves of in-migration to Alberta. His innovative approach begins with the individual migrant and analyses the relocation experience from origin to destination. Through interviews with hundreds of migrants, Hiller shows that migration is complex and dynamic, shaped not just by what Alberta offers but also prompted by a process that begins in the region of origin which makes migration possible, and helps determine whether migrants stay or return home.By combining a social psychological approach with structural factors such as Alberta's transition from a regional hinterland province to its emerging role the global system, discussions of gender, the internet, and folk culture, "Second Promised Land" provides a multi-dimensional and deeply human account of a contemporary Canadian phenomenon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool to Understand Internal Migration
I had the opportunity to the Second Promised Land as a textbook for one of my classes and I have to say, I was very impressed by the depth of the book and the coverage of different topics it provides. It was very insightful and indepth and the author was not afraid to state any shortcomings his research might have had.

Although this is focused on internal migration, it would've been nice if Hiller talked in more detail about ethnic minorities / racial minorities and how it affects internal migration for those people. It would've taken a macro idea and kind of brought it down to the micro level.

It's very detailed, so if you just want an overview, you will probably want to look further. Also, a lot of primary research is presented instead of just saying most people said this, he actually provides snippets of what they said, which is really nice.

All in all, I very good book about internal migration to Alberta. Definitely worth a read! ... Read more

Product Description
This symposium continued the tradition of mid-term meetings held between the joint symposia of International Geoid and Gravity Commissions. This time, geodynamics was chosen as the third topic to accompany the traditional topics of gravity and geoid. The symposium thus aimed at bringing together geodesists and geophysicists working in the general areas of gravity, geoid and geodynamics. Besides covering the traditional research areas, special attention was paid to the use of geodetic methods for geodynamics studies, dedicated satellite missions, airborne surveys, geodesy and geodynamics of arctic regions, and the integration of geodetic and geophysical information. ... Product Description
Mapper of Mountains follows the career of Dominion Land Surveyor Morrison Parsons Bridgland, who provided the first detailed maps of many regions of the Canadian Rockies. Between 1902 and 1930, this unheralded alpinist perfected phototopographical techniques to compile a series of mountaintop photographs during summers of field work, and spent his winters collating them to provide the Canadian government, tourists, and mountain climbers with accurate topographical maps. Bridgland was a great climber and co-founder of the Alpine Club of Canada. Mapper of Mountains also tells the story of the Rocky Mountain Repeat Photography Project, which studies the changes sustained in the Rockies, repeating the field work accomplished by Bridgland almost a century ago. ... From the author: Assessing spatial equity with respect to urban public amenity provision involves examining the association between amenity distribution and population need for amenities. Geographic Information Systems in coordination with local spatial autocorrelation, were used to investigate the association between neighbourhood accessibility to playgrounds and demographic and social need for playgrounds in Edmonton, while considering differences in playground quality throughout the city. The primary objectives of this study were to assess whether playground provision, for location and quality, in Edmonton is equitable and, more generally, to investigate the role that amenity quality plays in assessing spatial equity. The results indicate that playgrounds are equitably distributed within Edmonton, with the highest-social-need neighbourhoods having the greatest accessibility to playgrounds. However, once differences in playground quality are considered, there is less of an association between high-social-need and high-accessibility areas. The findings suggest that greater attention be paid to differences in playground quality within Edmonton and that spatial equity researchers give greater consideration to amenity quality when evaluating spatial equity within cities.

Description:
This paper analyzes the introduction and development of irrigation agriculture in the lower Bow River region, Alberta, Canada. Sponsored by the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) and the Canadian federal government, irrigation promised to transform semi-arid prairie into a densely settled countryside. After 1900, a mixture of policies and practices pioneered elsewhere were deployed to create the largest irrigation project of its kind in North America. Settlers faced difficult economic conditions, however, and fell into conflict with the CPR. The system as a whole experienced a range of environmental changes as irrigation water altered the land and produced new conditions for flora and fauna. By 1930, the irrigation project experienced high levels of settler abandonment and deep fiscal problems. The circumstances of the Bow River case suggest the particular qualities of social and environmental changes initiated by irrigation agriculture in the Canadian prairies, but they also provide the basis to consider comparatively the processes and difficulties attending irrigation expansion in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century world. ... Product Description
In the late nineteenth century the forty-ninth parallel was a key site of Canadian and American efforts to shape their respective nations and to create national identities. The international border sliced through Blackfoot country, creating the Alberta-Montana borderlands yet the dynamic arising out of this region’s landscape, aboriginal people, newcomers, railroads, and ongoing cross-border ties proved to challenge each government’s efforts to colonize and nationalize this region. Shelia McManus makes an important and useful comparison between American and Canadian government policies and attitudes regarding race, gender, and homesteading. Drawing on government maps and reports, oral testimony, and personal papers, The Line Which Separates explores the uneven way in which the borderlands divided a previously cohesive region. ...
