Extractions: In 1885, nearly three decades before Arizona became a state, the territorial legislature approved $25,000 for building The University of Arizona in Tucson. The first classes convened in 1891, when thirty-two students and six teachers met in the original building now known as Old Main. The University developed in accordance with the Act of Congress of July 2, 1862, known as the Morrill Act, creating land-grant colleges and enabling the institution to obtain federal funds for its original schools of agriculture and mines. In the early days, there were more students in the preparatory department than in the University proper, and the number of University graduates was never more than ten a year. Then came a decade of rapid expansion. The territory became a state, high schools multiplied, and the preparatory department was closed. In 1915, the University was reorganized into three colleges-the College of Agriculture; the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences (later Liberal Arts); and the College of Mines and Engineering. The Arizona Bureau of Mines was established the same year. The 40-acre campus of the 1890s has grown to 356 acres and 157 buildings. Its purpose remains, in the language of the original law, "to provide the inhabitants of this state with the means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the various branches of literature, science, and the arts," and, insofar as possible, to provide a technical education adapted to the development of Arizona's resources. The University is maintained by funds appropriated by the State of Arizona and the United States government, and by tuition, fees, and collections, including private grants from many sources.

White have been selected for a prestigious Provost General Education Teaching Award for their contributions to undergraduate education at the University of Arizona. Greg Jackson Susan White has been an Associate Professor in the Department of English since 1987. Dr. White's teaching deftly combines her academic research with a concern for every student. Her scholarship, which one colleague called "provocative and brilliant", clearly informs the erudition in lectures and the high standards of her Tier 2 courses that her former students testify to. Students note her enthusiasm for her material and the skillful ways she encourages dialogue between professor and students. One student's support letter openly admitted that before taking Susan White's Tier 2 course in Genre in Literature and Film, she had little respect for film as an art form. Through the courses, however, she acquired "a lifelong appreciation for the depth, breadth, and width of filmmaking that was gift to me from Dr. White." Extractions: Transcript Evaluation Process Evaluation of transcripts from post-secondary institutions is a 2-step process. First, the courses are evaluated with respect to the University of Arizona's policy on the acceptability of transfer credit in the Office of Admissions or the Office of Curriculum and Registration. During this initial evaluation, University staff determines which courses are accepted and post these credits to your academic record in the Student Information System (SIS). Courses transferred from Arizona community colleges and some courses from Arizona public universities are given UA department equivalencies if these exist. Course equivalencies for in-state community colleges are provided in the Arizona Course Applicability System (AZCAS). Transfer students who complete the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) at their community college need to have the AGEC certified on their transcript before it can be added to their UA academic record. The local affiliate of the National Association of Scholars has looked comprehensively at course offerings and graduation requirements at three state universities in Arizona. The Arizona Association of Scholars (AAS) wanted to determine if students in the Grand Canyon State receive a comprehensive, integrated education. The findings, released today as The Dissolution of General Education: A Review of Arizona's Three State Universities' Programs of Study and Degree Requirements, suggest that reform is sorely needed. The survey, formatted as a PDF file, is available here The AAS found that students can avoid most core disciplines that would prepare them to participate fully in our democracy and in the global economy. According to the report, the current structure of requirements for an undergraduate degree at the three Arizona public universities "fails to provide students with an appreciation for the interrelatedness of human knowledge, as well as the solid foundations needed for advanced study." The National Association of Scholars (NAS) is America's foremost higher education reform group. Located in Princeton, it has forty-five state affiliates and more than four thousand professors, graduate students, and college and university administrators and trustees as members. The Arizona Association of Scholars is a state affiliate of the NAS. AAS members include active tenured and non-tenured faculty of the three state universities and other institutions of higher education in Arizona, as well as individuals who share these professors' dedication to higher education.
