Product Description
'Old Oligarch' is a label often applied to the unknown author of the Athenian Constitution preserved with the works of Xenophon. Probably written in the mid 420's B.C., it is the earliest surviving Athenian prose text, and its author was probably a young pupil of the teachers known as sophists. It is an essay which replies to oligarchic criticisms of the Athenian democracy by agreeing with the critics that democracy is distasteful but arguing that it is appropriate for Athens as a city whose power depends on the poorer citizens who row the navy's ships, and that it is successful and could not easily be overthrown. This edition provides a Greek text and English translation, with Introduction, Commentary and Appendixes which discuss the date, authorship and character of the work, the historical background, the statements and arguments presented by the author and features of the author's style. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Review of Old Oligarch
This text does a good job of presenting the Athenian Constitution, but there are several failures it presents. To begin, this is a $36 book that essentially contains 11 pages of text and more than 100 of commentary. The work would be better placed in a collection of Xenophon's works. Further, the introduction of this work includes far too many in-text citations to the Greek original. It is confusing and unhelpful for the average reader. ... Read more

Product Description
It is 401 BC. After an epic battle in Persia, Xenophon is elected general of the defeated Greek army and must lead the men on a fraught journey back home - a journey of hundreds of miles, north from modern-day Iraq into the mountains of Kurdistan and Armenia, and down to the coast of the Black Sea, fighting all the way, harried on all sides by Persian forces, wild mountain tribesmen, and a bitter winter...This book presents a gripping adventure full of drama, human interest, strong characters, pathos and triumph. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible, engaging, illuminating...
Xenophon was an Athenian with Spartan leanings that joined a mercenary force employed by one side of a fraternal conflict in Persia. When his patron was defeated and killed, Xenophon set out with the mercenary forces to return to Greece.

It was not an easy trip.

This was a tight and tidy job of presenting a fascinating historic rife with intrigue battles, hardships, betrayals, individual valor and at least some kind of triumph. It's crammed with the kind of facts and asides that I find absolutely necessary to bring history alive, but so much more. I found elements of the archetypal hero's journey with detours into the nature (and follies) of war, group dynamics, political maneuvering and the fount of classical philosophy.

Very well done and highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Historian, soldier, huntsman, economist, farmer, philosopher and author, Xenophon is one of the most versatile yet most accessible of the classical Greeks. Born at the start of the Peloponnesian War in Athens, he joined the outer circle of Socrates' young admirers and wrote affectionately of his mentor in a manner which contrasts strongly with that of Plato. In his 'Hellenika' he composed a history of his own times beginning at the point where Thucydides broke off and taking the story down to 403 B.C. In 401 he joined the Greek mercenary force abetting Cyrus' ill-fated coup against king Ataxerxes of Persia and, when their commanders were treacherously murdered, he led the Greek survivors out of Asia Minor through what is now Northern Iraq, Kurdistan and Armenia; his 'Anabasis' relates one of the most remarkable true adventure stories to come out of the ancient world. Later he retired to the Peloponnese, where he farmed and wrote on a wide variety of topics -- the Spartan constitution, horsemanship, domestic management and various forms of biography amongst them. Anderson's monograph follows a basically chronological framework for Xenohophon's life and works, treating him essentially as a representative of his own age, of its attitudes and its preoccupations. The book is illustrated by a collection of plates, and presents a readily accessible account of its subject for scholars, students and general readers. ... Read more
