Editorial Review

Book Description
Selected Letters of Robert Penn Warren, Volume Three, provides an indispensable glimpse of Warren the writer and the man, covering a crucial decade in his life. Edited by Randy Hendricks and James A. Perkins, and introduced by William Bedford Clark, this collection of largely previously unpublished letters and newly discovered material documents Warren's time at the University of Minnesota, his writing and publication of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the King's Men, his appointment as Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress, and his divorce from Emma "Cinina" Brescia and subsequent marriage to the writer Eleanor Clark.

The period 1943-1952 also saw the publication of "A Poem of Pure Imagination"; World Enough and Time; The Ballad of Billie Potts; At Heaven's Gate; and Selected Poems, 1923-1943. Warren's letters shed new light on those works and on his close relationship with his editors Lambert Davis and Albert Erskine. Included too is correspondence concerning Warren's collaboration with Robert Rossen on the movie production of All the King's Men, which received the Academy Award for best picture in 1949.

The list of friends and colleagues with whom Warren communicated reads like a roll call of major twentieth-century literary figures and clearly shows his ever-widening influence on the world of letters. Spanning a remarkable range in both style and tone, the letters disclose Warren's attitudes toward his work as a teacher and his thoughts on the events of World War II, the Korean War, and the political conflicts in postwar Europe.

Thoroughly annotated and scrupulously researched, Volume Three captures Warren in an extraordinary phase in his life and career, reaching his maturity and making many commitments at once yet pursuing them all with a seemingly boundless energy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Even Pulitzer Prize-Winners Write Less than Steller
I'm not sure if I got what I paid for. I picked up this book as a quick read for a brief introduction to the Alamo and got exactly that; however, I was disappointed to find out the book reads at a third grade level with below-caliber writing from Robert Penn Warren. Because the book was originally published pre-Civil Rights Movement, the book reeks (especially at its beginning) of anti-Native American sentiment (still portrayed as savages and uncivilized) and occasionally dipping into the anti-Mexican (I guess this one is obvious because it was the Americans versus them). If it weren't scribed by Warren, this book would have been lost a long time ago. I wouldn't even suggest giving this to a child to read because its view points are very biased. Luckily there are better written and researched books about the Alamo.

3-0 out of 5 stars Juvenile and probably not accurate
I picked up this little volume, written by Robert Penn Warren, because I really liked "All the King's Men" and much of Warren's poetry."Remember the Alamo!", however, reads more like a kiddie history of the battle from the view point of the late 1950s.It is an OK read, although, there are some glaring inaccuracies due to Warren using second-hand information (like the escape of Rose). This will never take the place of Walter Lord's superior "A Time to Stand." If you have sixth or eighth graders at home, it might be a nice intro to the battle, but most adults (I suspect) would expect a better performance from a writer of Warren's cailber.[To the publishers--it would be nice, in future editions, if you would reset the several spelling typos found in the book.] ... Book Description
In the long poem Audubon Robert Penn Warren—named America's first Poet Laureate—found his authentic poetic voice and persona. In the Hearts Last Kingdom Calvin Bedient argues that from this point on he was seen in his best work as a great poet.

"A beautifully sustained study in which the author investigates Warren's poetry since 1969 and reveals its characteristic voices, themes, measures, and metaphors. Bedient is at once a master of Warren's poetry and a master of criticism, and he writes as well as any contemporary critic."—Sewanee Review

"[Bedient's] contribution to an appreciation of the power of Warren's latest poetry . . . it breathtaking."—Western Humanities Review ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Easy Read
Best known as the author of All the King's Men, Robert Penn Warren wrote this short (114 pages) book after Confederate President Jefferson Davis had his U.S. citizenship restored in 1979 during the Carter Administration, some nine decades after Davis's death. When this took place, Warren returned home to Todd County, Kentucky for a ceremony honoring Davis's posthumous reinstatement. As it turns out, Jefferson Davis, like Warren, was also a native of Todd County, and this book is Warren's memoir, a reflection on the ironic, sometimes sad life of the only president the Confederacy ever had. This rumination was so engaging I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting, captivated by the quality of story-telling and the poignant southern nostalgia it evoked.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good outline of the life of a great and troubled man
This is a concise - 114 pages - but no less impressive and comprehensive look at Davis's life than some of the longer biographies out there.Warren, like Allen Tate before him, sees Davis as a great man but deeplyflawed. He could quite possibly have won the War Between the States had henot been so rigidly dedicated to the principle of state's rights. He wastoo much the gentleman to do what was necessary.Lincoln, on the otherhand, was a pragmatist, and had no qualms about suspending the constitutionto achieve his means; he thought he was saving the Constitution by defyingit!

A sad tale of greatness thwarted by principle.Warren composedthis essay in honor of his fellow Kentuckian, whose U.S. citizenship hadbeen restored that year - 1979 - by an act of Congress. Warren writes withverve, wit, humor, and insight. ... Read more
