Fight Club on Steroids
Chuck Palahniuk is most known as the author of Fight Club, the book that became the movie with Brad Pitt and Ed Norton; and overnight Palahniuk had a cult following. Erie, scary, and terrifying; if I had to use three words to describe this book, that would be it. Robert A. Heinlien the classic Science Fiction author once quipped "One man's theology is another man's belly laugh." Of this book I would state, "One man's perversion is another man's pleasure." This book will hit both, depending on who you are and your sensibilities.

This book is a collection of short stories, written by characters who are on a writer's retreat. They all responded to an ad to "give up three months of your life and create the masterpiece you have always said you would". Each of the 18 respondents had an idea of where they would be going - to a large country estate, a camp in the woods; yet the reality is they get locked into an old ornate theatre house. They have food, shelter, and facilities, yet all doors are locked, all windows bricked over and no way out.

From there the book becomes a cross between Fear Factor, Survivor and your most feared horror story. We see the depths to which people will descend to achieve fame and riches. Palahniuk, during the current book tour, was reading the first story called `Guts' and to date there have been 63 people who have passed out with many people being injured falling into book cases in book stores. This book will at times, turn your stomach, but will give you an understanding of the darkest side of human nature.
Readers beware! This book is like the fight club movie on super steroids.

Stranger than Fiction: True Stories by Chuck Palahniuk
This is, in fact, one of the strangest books I have ever read -- also one of the funniest and most endearing.I thought about it for weeks and then sent it to several friends.

yeah...i guess i need to be better at reading the details.this audio CD is NOT the entire book.chuck is my current favorite contemporary writer... bar none.

i have all of his books...and have read several of them several times.this was the first time i have made an audio CD purchase of a Palaniuk book.i was soon to be staring at a ten hour drive through boring territory and figured this would be the coolest audio book i had ever experienced.as a wrestling coach, i was particularly wanting to hear the story about amateur wrestling/wrestlers.

and that is my main beef with the audio book.it is SELECTIONS from the book.the story i was anticipating was not in the audio CD at all...period.when it came to the end i was pretty disappointed.i never did go back to check which of the others didn't appear in the audio book.

i also knew this was NOT a work of fiction in the chuckstyle i am so accustomed to.that is cook.i liked it.the stories are good and the format is fresh and interesting.

bottom line... don't buy the audio CD if you want every last story.therefore, as an audio CD...i had to give this a *3*.if this were a review of the complete book, i am sure it would be a *4* at least.(i would rate his others a *5* in case that helps you)i also ordered Haunted at the same time (old school paper style, btw) and can't wait to get into it. ... While scholars have analyzed the masculinity crisis portrayed in American fiction, few have focused on postmodernist fiction, few have examined masculinity without using feminist theory, and no articles propose a solution for ending traditional masculinity's dominance. I examine the masculinity crisis as it is portrayed in two postmodernist novels, David Foster Wallace's novel Infinite Jest and Chuck Palahniuk's novel Fight Club. Both novels have male characters that ran the gamut of masculinities, but those that are the most successful at avoiding gender stereotypes develop a masculinity which incorporates strong, phallic masculinity and nurturing, testicular masculinity, creating a balanced masculinity. Also, both novels examine postmodernist fiction's future. Wallace and Palahniuk help reveal the future of postmodernist fiction: a post-postmodernist fiction that, like well-rounded masculinity, seeks to be more emotionally open while still using irony and innovation for meaningful effects, not just to be clever.
