5-0 out of 5 stars Om, The Secret of Ahbor Valley
I recently received this wonderful novel for the princely sum of 52 cents (plus a lot more for shipping), and it's worth much more! Although written in the mid-twenties with echoes of some of the then-popular prejudices, it still reads well. In places, it's quite funny (I found myself chuckling aloud) and yet, it maintains a thread of mystery and adventure set in the Raj in India and, further on, in Tibet. I am only half-way through it and already I'm looking for more books by the same author, Talbot Mundy.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Eastern religion, historical settings and travel in the "good old days".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mystical adventure novel
Most people may know Talbot Mundy from his famous "King of the Kyber Rifles" which became a motion picture. This novel is certainly adventurous as well as historical--referring to early 20th c. India still under British rule as well as little-known (and still independent) Tibet. There is also a considerable element of mystery to it and a great deal of mystical allusions, references, sayings, etc.The author includes some humor and clever turns-of-phrase such as p. 15: "He felt about as sweetly reasonable as a dog with hydrophobia."While some of the specific details are a bit inaccurate IMHO, it's a terrific mystical novel overall--such as Edward Bulwer-Lytton's "Zanoni."Other mystical or occult novelists (quite popular at the start of the 20th c.) include Marie Corelli & Joan Grant (though hers are claimed as pastlife experiences).Similar to the play within this book, fictional presentations are a remarkably effective way to convey truths, mystical or otherwise.Today, video vignettes are used, for example, in teaching managers to supervise, employees to avoid sexual harassment, etc. There are some great truths woven into this fictional work which only serve to enhance its value.Of course, it can be read as simply an adventure novel.Enjoy, it's great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual adventure at once down-to-earth and ecstatic
An English Secret Service agent stationed in mysterious India wants to find his long-lost sister. He has little to go on but he stretches his talents to the breaking point to find her.

Little does know that he is not actually the pursuer, but the pursued. He is being secretly led by his guru with an inner love and wisdom that is matched by a personality that puts the lie to the stereotypical image of the reticent, desiccated spiritual high and mighty swami. This guru-lama will keep you panting for more of his sublimely practical wisdom as he liberally sprinkles his tongue-in-cheek aphorisms throughout the book. I have photo-copied all of these and enjoy reading them often to keep my spiritual quest from degenerating into a brittle formulaic procedure or trailing off into a wispy yearning for an other worldly never-never-land.

Your everyday life IS the Path and this twinkly-eyed lama will not let you forget it. Indeed, if you think your life is tough as a student aspirant, by the end of the book, you will realize how ever-so-much-harder is the teacher's lot. You will be brought to a summit of poignant insight that leaves you with naught but a desire to throw your arms around this forthright, insightful, stern lama. You will want to comingle your love with this man who has blended his heart flame into an elixir that will, if you truly quaff it, forevermore lift you onto a new Summit. You will find a new definition of spiritual responsibility--alive, vibrant and free--in a dedicaton to service heretofore unknown.

I have read this book three times now--and two of those times I read it aloud to friends whom I loved enough to want to share with them its rare mixture of wisdom, spiritual yearning, humor, businesslike can-do spirit, mystery, adventure and hope.

I gave my last copy to a couple, whom I instantly recognized as soul mates when I met them. Now I am buying it again and look forward to meeting more people I love enough to give it to. Maybe my having another copy will invoke another such joyous reunion. And if you buy it and read it, I'm sure you, too, will be some measure closer to the union of hearts that all spiritual seekers on this planet are aiming for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pulpy goodness
I have wanted this book since I read about it in Morning of the Magicians. Luckily, I never found it until now. I was expecting a serious speculation about a mysterious fraternity. What I finally got was a cracking great pulp yarn, at a time when I could enjoy it. Mundy is not Dan Brown, there are no real life clues and enigmas. But Mundy is nonetheless a very competent tale spinner. He is also a very evocative writer and his descriptions will put you right in the action. I recommend this for anyone who wants escapist literature at its best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another of Talbot Mundy's best
Talbot Mundy was a great writer who has been mostly forgotten aboutthese days.At one time, he had fan clubs all over the english speaking world. His characters and stories have inspired many writers including Robert E Howard and Robert Heinlein.Beyond stating that "The Ivory Trail" is about a group of "white" hunters in "deepest darkest africa", I am going to leave it for you to read the story.Instead, I shall point out that the Ivory trail is considered one of his finest efforts. (This is said about a writer of many books and had many "fine efforts".)Even critics of Mundy acknowledged The Ivory Trail as a great book.Reference books have referred to "The Ivory Trail" as the archtype or best example ever written of the "white bwana hunter" style novels. One thing to note - this book was published in 1919 and is not what some people today would call "politically correct".If you read this book and like it, I suggest you try Mundy's "King of the Khyber Rifles" and his "Tros of Samothrace" series. They are even better than "The Ivory Trail".If you are about to read your first Mundy book, I envy you.I would love to feel again the rapture and enchantment I felt as I read "The Ivory Trail" and other Mundy books for the first time. ... Product Description
Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many areprovided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary.

Product Description
Talbot Mundy's legendary account of the Druid Warrior Tros and his unwilling service to the Roman Empire. First serialized in Adventure, the book chronicles Tros' attempts to keep Julius Caesar from conquering the Britons, and of the young man's efforts to free his father. Stunning for its time, this work of action that shatters anything R.E. Howard could dream up also makes the case that Celtic peoples were far more sophisticated than the wicker-burning freaks they'd been painted as, and goes deeply into the mind of Caesar, depicting the supposed Worthy as a proto-fascist and demon fully capable of massacring comparatively defenseless barbarians on a whim. No mere hack and slash work, Mundy's Tros grows as the narrative presses along, and survives, ironically, in the service of Rome. This book is the author's finest work, though one that, sadly, ended his relationship with a publisher (who'd been expecting something shorter, and about Cleopatra.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the titles in Mundy's "Jimgrim" series
This Mundy novel was also published under the title "The King in Check".I have already written reviews for the Mundy titles "The Ivory Trail" and "King of the Khyber Rifles". If you would like to get an idea of how much I enjoy Talbot Mundy books, check out those books and my reviews. This time I am going to quote from the blurb of "The King in Check", A. L. Burt edition as I think that it will tell you all you need to know about this great book:"The King in Check" is a highly exciting adventure story in which there again appears that famous hero of Mr. Mundy's special creation - Jimgrim or James Schuyler Grim.Jimgrim is an American secret service agent, at present in the employ of the British in Jerusalem. With him in the present novel are his faithful sikh shadow, Narayan Singh; as well as Ramsden, an American and Jeremy Ross, an ex-soldier of the Australian forces, both eager for a fight of any kind. This opportunity soon presents itself, as the abmitions of the French in Syria arouse the enmity of King Feisal of the Arabs. For his aid in WWI, the Allies have promised Feisal the kingship of Syria, Palestine and Trans-Jordania.This promise they have not kept however and the French are out to discredit or kill the Arab chieftain. To further their ends, an order is forged, ostensibly from Feisal to his Arab adherents which calls for a massacre of the Jews in Jerusalem. When this message is intercepted, Jimgrim rapidly swings into action. With Ramsden and Ross as volunteers, he matches wits and weapons with the powerful plotters who are financed by the French...(Jimgrim) proceeds to Damascus and smears the intrigue against Feisal. With a considerable amount of little known historical truth worked into the background, "The King in Check" (or as titled in this case "Affair in Araby") is one of the most colorful, fast-moving and exciting of Mr. Mundy's Jimgrim stories."

While I love this blurb, it just can't convey the extent of intrigue that goes on in the novel. What the blurb mentions is just the bare outline of a story that is surprising in it's depth. ... Read more

Yasmini left them, and walked alone to the very edge of the pond, where she stood still for several minutes, apparently gazing at her own reflection in the moonlit water--or perhaps listening. There was no sign of any one else, nor sound of footfall. Then, as if the reflection satisfied, or she had heard some whisper meant for her and none else, she began to dance, moving very slowly in the first few rhythmic steps, resembling a water-goddess, the clinging silk displaying her young outline as she bent and swayed. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry to dissent, but...
Adventure fiction written anywhere from 1890 to 1944 is a favorite of mine.I DO love Rohmer, Howard and Burroughs and am constantly on the lookout for a new author. When a little bit of research led me to Talbot Mundy (and a little more research led me to Khyber Rifles) I was excited.I got over it.While the plot and story are passable, almost nothing happens. The entire novel is an exercise in "what happens next?" while nothing happens next.
My other complaint is in the character development. While the author creates many memorable characters throughout the book, Athelstan King, the principle character, isn't one of them. For the most part Mundy never really lets us "see" who King is.He tells us.Every other page has a paragraph telling us how witty he is or noble he is.I'd rather infer through his actions, personally.
On the plus side, Mundy truly creates the look and feel of India. If that is enough, you will enjoy this book.If you are expecting Haggard, you will not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic novel of adventure with a tinge of fantasy, as a princess skilled in the mystical arts seeks to conquer India
King--of the Khyber Rifles, as Mundy's third novel, is the first work to reveal the unique talent and archetypes that would emerge throughout his oeuvre.Mundy imagines a set of incredible places, situations, and characters, using all of the imagination of which he was capable at the time across such topics as the army, the secret service, a powerful woman, hidden caves, secret wisdom, a mad mullah, war, and indigenous peoples.King--of the Khyber Rifles has attained a certain classic status through his arrangement of these plot elements into mythic form.(To read more about Mundy's writing career, see my book, Talbot Mundy: Philosopher of Adventure, by Brian Taves.)

The unusual name of Mundy's hero, Athelstan King, is an inversion of the name and title of the tenth century ruler who became the first Saxon to govern all of England.Creating the English civil service, King Athelstan established legal codes and led a victory over an alliance of Norse, Scots, and Strathclyde Britons invading England.Like his namesake, Mundy's hero saves India from a foreign invasion brewing in the Khinjan Caves beyond the Khyber, which Yasmini hopes to lead.

Mathematics is the key to King's character; he relies on its logic and immutability to both govern his actions and resist Yasmini. He also studies medicine for relaxation, allowing him to adopt the disguise of the Indian physician ("hakim"), Kurram Khan. The country is as much his own as if he belonged to her indigenous races.Like Yasmini, with her background of both Russian and Indian ancestry, but reared in India, King is also a child of the country, despite being of English blood.

King is ready to lay down his life to preserve the peace of India, to prevent India from becoming a new front in World War I.Yet, from the outset of King--of the Khyber Rifles, Mundy demonstrated his increasing habit of reversing the imperialist presuppositions of colonial adventure.Unlike most previous chroniclers of British India, Mundy takes his hero well beyond the territorial and spiritual realms of English control.King provides a surrogate for the white, Western reader into a land far beyond their knowledge or domain, where all characters and power are in the hands of Moslem Indians.King's adventure in the Khyber Pass and Khinjan Caves is at once both a patriotic mission and a journey of metaphysical discovery, an initiation.

Within the Khinjan Caves, Yasmini has discovered the sleepers, a legend known to the hillmen as "the Heart of the Hills," the remarkably well-preserved corpses of a forgotten Roman warrior and the woman who inspired his brief conquest of the East.Their physical resemblance to Yasmini and King is uncanny.Yasmini hopes to use the legend of the "Heart of the Hills" to convince the hillmen that she and King are reincarnations of the dead pair, ready to resume their conquest. In this way Mundy also begins the theme of reincarnation in his writing, while not yet suggesting his actual belief in the phenomenon.Through a magical crystal, King and Yasmini are able to see events in the lives of the "sleepers."Previously, Yasmini has read King's thoughts, yet Mundy handles both these fantastic elements in a restrained, spare, and realistic manner.

In the test of wills between Yasmini and King, he maintains the greater self-mastery.Both are reluctant to admit their increasing love for one another, which would compromise their respective missions.Just as Yasmini has been unable to kill King, despite his interference in her plans, King is barely able to resist her spell. He is unable to harm her and indeed hopes for a conclusion that will allow him to serve her. There can be no surrender into the arms of the other for either King or Yasmini.King cannot be said to have triumphed over her, because to preserve the status quo is a far different task from Yasmini's dream of reviving an empire.Hence, even in defeat Yasmini retains her imperiousness, while in victory King retains his dignity and humility.

Throughout King--of the Khyber Rifles, Mundy turns conventional assumptions and metaphors on their head to reveal new perspectives, spanning the political to the sexual realm. All of the unexpected reversals and multiple roles of the hero and heroine add depth to both the plot and the leads. This reaches its apex with a major character, Rewa Gunga, who early in the novel King had anxiously suspected of being one of Yasmini's past or present lovers.Instead, Rewa Gunga is revealed as Yasmini herself in disguise.Just as Yasmini had been hired by the British to defuse a rebellion she was leading, and King went into Khinjan as an Indian, now Yasmini is disclosed as one of her own supporting characters.

Although some of the experiences of King and Yasmini resemble those of Ayesha, "She-who-must-be-obeyed," in Haggard's She, and its prequel Ayesha, the style and interpretation are different. Both Haggard and Mundy use a white man's journey to a remote area, where both Ayesha and Yasmini reside in underground caves.Unlike Ayesha's other-worldliness, and ties to ancient times, Yasmini is no superwoman who has overcome mortality to live on through the centuries.Instead she is a 20th century woman, whose dreams would only be possible in the present and whose interest in the past is the power it can give her today.

Mundy's style is elliptical and oblique, in a natural rather than affected manner, with numerous arresting juxtapositions, such as his summation of the Khyber as "haunted after dark by the men whose blood-feuds are too reeking raw to let them dare go home and for whom the British hangman very likely waits a mile or two farther south."The book is also full of telling details that add a sense of authenticity, despite the likelihood that they came largely from Mundy's imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mundy is one of the best!!!!!!!
King of the Khyber Rifles (KOTKR) is just one of the great books that Talbot Mundy wrote. It was one of his first books and one of his best. This book and many of his others not only inspired other early writers like Robert E Howard but they also inspired more modern authors. In Robert Heinlein's Glory Road, Heinlein refers to Tros of Samothrace (a Mundy character).S. M. Stirling in Peshawar Lancers is obviously paying tribute to Mundy and other pulp writers of the time.Fritz Leiber (look up author on amazon.com if you are unaware of this science fiction and fantasy author's work. His "Fafhred and the Grey Mouser" series is on a par with Conan.) wrote an entire essay on how the "Tros of Samothrace" was one of his favorite set of books to read. If you haven't read any Mundy books yet, KOTKR and the Tros of Samothrace series are the best ones to start with.My comparision of Mundy and Kipling is that Kipling wrote from the typical British Colonialist's point of view.Mundy not only loved India, he "lived" India and Mundy's books reflect this. (Sidebar note of interest - Mundy hated being compared to Kipling. He preferred that his writing be compared to H. R. Haggard.) And if that wasn't enough, Mundy's chief characters (King, Jimgrim and Tros) all have a depth of intellect not seen in most of today's writing. Also many of Mundy's books have a surprising amount of mysticism and spirituality that adds immensely to the allure and intrigue of the storyline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like the Kyber Pass?Don't pass this one up
I couldn't agree more with the earlier reviewer.Mundy is one of my favorite 'adventure' novelists, and this is one of his better works. He's almost forgotten today, but as a pulp writer he kept many on the edge oftheir seats 60 years ago.If you like E.R. Burroughs, Sax Rohmer or RobertE. Howard, this is one you shouldn't miss (Howard based one of hischaracters, 'Francis X Gordon on Mundy's King)If you liked R. Kiplings'Kim'...imagine Kim grown up.Exotic love interest, intrique,a keen eyefor native customs of 100 years ago, swords and blazing pistols, charginglancers on a path 6 feet wide, with death inches away over the edge 3000feet to the canyon below...'King, of the Khyber Rifles' is about a Britishofficer involved in the 'mysticism' of then-forbidden Tibet, includesfrequent skirmishes with skulking mountain warriors, the old 'keeping theKhyber pass open' ploy, oh just read it.Mix up a peg of whiskey-soda, andescape the mundane last years of the 20th century. You can't go wrong withTalbot Mundy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Imagine Kipling writing about India... now imagine the same stories as rewrittten by Edgar Rice Burroughs, but an ERB that actually sounds as if he's been in the places he's writing about. And all the detail of a GeorgeMacdonald Fraser novel... Then you throw in some mystic stuff that makesWilliam S. Burroughs sound illiterate, add a pinch of "Boys OwnStories" or "Biggles" or whatever then light a match... thisis one amazing novel, it really is. ... Read more

This critical biography chronicles both the actual travels and the philosophical meanderings of Talbot Mundy, one of the pioneers of the fantasy and adventure genre. Less celebrated than his contemporaries Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad, Mundy was no less gifted when it came to the literary portrayal of faraway lands. He was one of the first Western writers to show an appreciation of Eastern culture, and his writing became an outlet for his radical ideas on religion and philosophy. At the age of sixteen, Mundy left his native England to begin his life of adventure—a journey that took him from India to the Middle East to Tibet and finally to America, which became his adopted home. The American spirit of adventure matched Mundy’s own, and it was here that he found a true audience for his work. This book explores Mundy’s oeuvre—much of it set in exotic locales through which he himself had traveled—and considers both his novels and his lesser known writing, as well as his film and radio work. Books such as Rung Ho!, King-of the Khyber Rifles, Caves of Terror, Purple Pirate and Tros of Samothrace are discussed and placed within the framework of Mundy’s life and philosophy. The final chapter evaluates the enduring value of his writings. Appendices include a comprehensive list of Mundy’s works and a chronological listing by their original publication dates. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterly Achievement
This is an excellent, well-written, meticulously researched study of Mundy's works which the author has done as a labor of love over many years. When he began he had the opportunity of interviewing the surviving people who knew Mundy such as his 85 year-old stepson. Excellently footnoted, this is a major achievement of archival research with every fact carefully documented with detailed footnotes. Taves has enabled the reader to understand the creative development of the writer and his cultural significance over the course of several decades. Were it not for "market values" ruling most academic and mainstream presses, this would have appeared in a prestigious venue. But, as it is, we must again be grateful for certain direct-to-library presses who recognize dedication and quality and bring such works out to a wider public. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Long Awaited Biography
This book is a veritable treasure chest for any scholar or fan of the marvellous writer and humanist Talbot Mundy, and it has been long overdue. Until the publication of this fine volume, to my knowledge the two volumes published by Donald Grant and written by Peter Beresford Ellis were the only real source of serious scholarship on the life and writings of Mundy.

Attractive, valuable and pleasing as these two volumes were for me this book has so much more to offer.

Brian Taves book shows evidence of extensive research in all aspects of Mundy's literary career whereas Ellis's books are mainly about his book publications The notes section at the end is fascinating and there is also an extensive Chronological list of all the original publications, including writings for the pulps and the popular magazines of the day both in the U.S and the U.K

What makes this such a fascinating read is that Brian Taves has written the biography in such a way that all Mundy's novels and other writings are explained it the context of his ongoing spiritual and religious maturity. Mundy was a man well ahead of his times showing a deep understanding of comparativereligions and cultures as well as respect and tolerancefor these peoples whether in India, Tibet ,The Far East and Africa. He was able to do this of course because he was an insatiable traveller in all parts of the world where he carried out extensive research for his novels.

Even though Mundy had a colourful life full of adventure and numerous romances Brian Taves does not sensationalise these points, only refers to them in context. Some researchers have described Mundy as a bit of a rogue and have emphasised the more scandalous aspects of his career, however Taves shows us a deeply sensitive, very intelligent and generous man whose main aim in life was to live in harmony with his fellow human beings whatever their race or culture. Taves biography is non-judgemental as any good biography should be.

There is a thorough analysis of every major novel, movie adaptation and many of the more famous pulp stories with a large emphasis on the most fruitful and happy time of his life which he spent at Point Loma with Katherine Tingley and other members of the Theosophical Society whose influence was very beneficial, helping him produce some of his most important works like "Om","The Devil's Guard", Tros of Samothrace and"The Red Flame of Erinpura".

I would give this book my highest recommendation and thank Brian Taves for giving Mundy fans the book we have all been waiting for. Malcolm Henderson

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lost Classic
Thirty years ago, this was one of the "Classics Illustrated" comics, and it made a big impression on me as a kid. Now, having visited India and studied its history, returning to the story in book form resonated on several levels. Mundy is a piercing observer of human nature as manifested in the diverse peoples of India and their British imperialist masters. He is also a master of graphic description. This swashbuckling tale of fantasy and adventure lets him be Edgar Rice Burroughs and Rudyard Kipling at the same time. It's exhilirating, thought-provoking, and a great memoir of the not-so-distant days when fantasy worlds could still be postulated for this planet. Read it, and then read "The Nine Unknown", by the same author ... Read more
