Wonderful work of American History and Hist of Language
HL Mencken proves it is possible to be a great journalist and a great language scholar in this amazing multi-edition study of the unique pathways of the English language in the United States from the founding through the Civil War and into the twentieth century. Sometimes his argument seems a little overcooked by the heat of his own "prejudices" (to use a term Mencken liked), against England and in favor of Germany, for example, but the work is amazingly informative and the writing is always magnificent. Raven McDavid's editing and updating of Mencken's work is so good it might have been credited without exaggeration as "with improvements by Raven McDavid."

Entertaining and edifying!!
Mencken provides a look at our impossible language with great flair, erudition, and with a liberal dollop of humor. Here is a spendid book that you can read systematically cover-to-cover or pick up and read in bits and pieces. It covers the development of our language both topically and historically.

Just the Facts
Quite possibly the best opening line I've read opens this work:"Biographies always fail, like psychology, because they mistake complexity for illumination."The purported author (one "Owen Hatteras") of this joint "biography" of H. L. Mencken and his co-editor, George Jean Nathan, claimsthat real knowledge of a person accumulates over years of the simple facts of that person's day-to-day life.How does he like his eggs?How long can he read a first-class novel before napping?What sort of underwear does he favor?We need these simple facts, claims Hatteras, and they can be a basis for a new sort of biography, which he happily lays out for these two distinguished men.

This, of course, is vintage Mencken, observing and fabricating in one of his lesser known tracts.A mere 42 pages long, it was enormously entertaining and I loved it-I even read portions aloud, guffawing, to my attentive wife. ... Read more

Mencken, The Shakespeare of the Sardonic
Author Henry Miller lists Mencken's Prejudices series (which was published in six volumes) as one of the "hundred books which influenced me most" in his famous list subjoined to "The Books In My Life." Having just completed reading a tattered copy of volume one, I can say in all sincerity that I have rarely enjoyed a book more. Prejudices is a compilation of Mencken's literary and theatrical critiques, and on display are his unparalleled lexicon, his sardonic wit, his exasperation with human incompetance and pomposity, and his appreciation for the rare instances of human greatness. If you have a good sense of humor and despise political correctness, settle down on the sofa and relish one of his 10 to 20 page vignettes. This is as close to nirvana as you can come with a book, but be forewarned! Keep your dictionary very handy until you have mastered Mencken's hilarious vernacular. ... Read more
