Pure Gold In and Of Itself
This book is an amazingly detailed exposition of gold concentration and extraction.Many books are long on the theory and very thin on the engineering issues involved.Other books are enhanced process diagrams and cookbooks and give little theory.This book is a treasure with a perfect blend of theory and the engineering process to utilize that theory.
Although I have a strong sciences background and 30 years of engineering experience my area is expertise is well outside of geology and process control chemistry.Therefore, a comprehensive view of the entire processing from geology to gold bar is a real treat.
One other item - trying to get this information on a paper by paper basis would be financially ruinous as well as maddening.

A Poem for all ages
I teach high school English and was introduced to this book during a writing workshop over the summer. My first thought was that it would be for the elementary range as it is in picture book form. After we read it once, I realized that was not the case and went home that night and ordered it. I have since read it to each of my classes, 9th-12th grades, and everyone of them was able to offer valuable insight when we went back to analyze it. Some even came up with things I would have never thought of myself! I would absolutely recommend this book to any teacher of any content area. It is easy reading for deep thinking.

Captivating
I love Marsden's work even though I'm quite a few years past being a young adult.This prayer, which reads like a poem, is haunting and evocative and inspiring.It made me cry the way the end of It's a Wonderful Life makesme cry.It's frightening, sometimes, to see all of your fears laid outbefore you like this, even the ones which you are afraid to name.It'scomforting, though, to know that what frightens you most deeply frightensothers as well, and that we all pray for safety, for kindness, for love,for acceptance, for strength, and for courage.

Read this all the waythrough so that you understand the whole of it, and then read it againslowly, savouring the way the words and the pictures lend to each others'interpretation. ... Read more

Well-written but confusing time travel story interrupted by other stories
I am not quite sure what to say about this novella.It was very well written.But it was more of a collection of short stories that were loosely tied together than an actual novel.

James is a quiet boy who has befriended an old physicist.When James inherits a time machine he begins to travel through time only to find out it's not all it's really cut out to be.This is woven with the story of a girl who was knocked out during a bombing and has lost her family.These two stories are constantly interrupted by other brief stories.The only thing they all have in common is that the people aren't where they should be or don't know where they should be.I was not sure where the other brief stories came from; I think they are stories that James read, although they could have been things James experienced.

If the above sounds kind of confusing, well it was.The writing itself was exceptional and even the briefest of stories drew you in and developed the characters in great depth.The way the story was put together was confusing, and the constant interruption of the main story with unrelated side stories, made the whole book seem a bit schizophrenic.Trying to figure out what was going on as I read the book was difficult, I finally just decided to enjoy reading the stories for what they were individually and trust that everything would come together and make sense in the end.Well, my trust was misplaced.Some of the things made sense, while others were left dangling.At one point James' sister herself is reading a Book of Unfinished Tales, where the stories are left dangling with apparently no meaning.I almost felt like Marsden added this part to excuse his own collection of dangling stories.

So while this was an intriguing and well-written book; I thought it was organized poorly and kind of only got halfway to where it was trying to go.It is a slow and meandering read, although the book itself is very short.The writing was good enough I might check out some of Marsden's earlier books; I wouldn't really recommend this book though.

fine young adult time travel tale
James is lonely with no one especially his party-animal parents to talk to about his feelings of loss and alienation.His only salvation is sneaking out of the house each night to stealthily enter the nearby Lab 17 where physicist Mr. Woodford invents incredible gizmos with the latest being incredibly a time machine.

When James enters Lab 17 the next night he finds a horrible sight; Mr. Woodford has died. Unable to resist the lure of adventure, James takes the time machine with him.James begins to travel the time stream observing the mysteries of individual people that raises his curiosities, but will he try to help those in need or will he use the gift of time to make a fortune?

OUT OF TIME is a fine young adult time travel tale that reads more like a series of interrelated short stories based on James' misadventures.The idea of a teen loose on history is fun to follow and James feels like Spiderman immediately after the bite deciding between heroic deeds or obtaining affluence.Youthful fans will enjoy his escapades as he gets involved in one scenario after another.

The Third Day the Frost
In John Marsden's third book of his Tomorrow series, The Third Day the Frost, Ellie and her friend's fates are tempted many times through out the book. They come across many obstacles along their way. The foreign army which has invaded their country is after them for all of the damage they have and done, also for all the soldiers lives they have taken through out the war.
They plan one big attack in which Ellie and Homer must sneak into Cobbler's Bay and blow up a ship. Ellie is sidetracked by a solider; when she finally manages to get to the meeting area her friends are in a tight space surrounded by soldiers. Ellie manages to come through the fear and save her friends lives by killing the soldiers. Ellie and her friends also manage to escape from Stratton prison which had been taken under control by the enemy army and Major Harvey, but as they are almost in their getaway car Major Harvey steps in and delays them threatening to kill Robyn. In order to save her friends Robyn sacrifices herself.
In my opinion this was the most exciting book so far in the series. John Marsden is an excellent writer. He knows exactly how to capture a teenager's attention and how to express the feelings and actions of his characters. This book shows determination, courage, fear, anxiety, exhaustion, confusion, and just about every emotion you can feel. Once you start you reading you do not want to put this book down.I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the Tomorrow series.

John Marsden's Will is the story of an extraordinary legal case. John Marsden himself was a mentally retarded Lancashire gentleman, looked after by his aunt. A servant, George Wright, became the aunt's lover and steward of Marsden's estate, continuing in office even after the aunt's death. When the unmarried Marsden finally died, his will effectively left Hornby Castle to the steward.

The will was then contested by the heir at law, Admiral Sandford Tatham, basing his claim on the incapacity of his cousin to understand and therefore endorse a complex will. Because John Marsden's mental state was at the heart of the case, depositions were taken by sides from all who had known him. This evidence allow us not only to follow the case but also to see the personalities and emotions of the men and women involved. In particular, it enables us to see Marsden himself in remarkable detail, from his fruitless attempts to learn his tables to his death from a stroke while in an earth closet. It is very rare for a handicapped person's life in any period before the twentieth century to be traceable in this way.

Tatham faced the problem that English courts were loath to overturn a will. The admiral suffered numerous set-backs in his attempt to oust Wright, as the action was fought out in a variety of courts followed by appeals, delay, manoeuvre and intrigue. The prolonged struggle and its outcome was followed by an enthralled public throughout the country.

Loves it!
It is always a treat to be able to see behind the scenes of your favourite writer and get an idea of what makes them tick and how they came about to produce such wonderful stories and characters. The only bad thing about this book is that it is no longer in print and therefore very difficult and expensive to buy second hand.However it was worth every cent, especially to hear the back story on the Tomorrow series and how he first came to hear Ellie in his head. I was like a child unwrapping presents on Christmas Day when I got to the'Tomorrow' chapter!It is a great read and as an aspiring writer it is always such a gift to be able to share in the back story and the authors journey to success. It sits on my shelf alongside my other favourite book on writing (Stephen King's book "On Writing").

Not awe-inspiring
The main character in this book is intense, almost as intense as the conclusion to this story.

Winter, our main girl, drops out of school and heads back to the house she inherited after both her parents died when she was young. She finds the workers she paid to keep the place up had let it fall to shambles, sold its furniture, and cut and hustled the lumber in the surrounding woodlands.

She's strong enough to not stand for it, unlike her family's financial handler. This was no problem for her compared to the struggle to find out the mystery behind her parents' death. There were roadblocks everywhere, her own Great-aunt refused to see her. But Winter is not the type of girl to let things slide, or accept no for an answer. She eventually gets her answer, and is more shocked than anyone else.

Alright read. Unexpected and suspenseful. Original and provoking. However, not awe-inspiring.

The Winter Is Moving On...
This book touched me so badly, I cried. It has a beautiful, entrancing plot with an exciting climax. Winter is a likeable and richly textured character. John Marsden is one of the best authors of all time! If you read this book and dislike it, there is something wring with you. Warning though: this book is a tear jerker. I better finish up here... I'm off to the library to renue my copy. ;)

Disappointing
Disappointing is probably the best word I can find for this book. There are a lot of questions left unanswered, the plot is somewhat rambly, and the situation that the main character (who struck me as very flat and shallow, a strange thing for a John Marsden character) is in raises too many questions for it to be believable or flow properly. I was quite shocked to find myself not liking this book at all; especially since I'm quite a big fan of Marsden's other works.

If you like moving books, read this one.
Sixteen-year-old Winter De Salis lost her parents twelve years ago, but she doesn't know how they died! She's been haunted by it ever since, and her feelings will not go away. She's now back in Warriewood after living with the Robinson family --- and she's determined to find out the truth.

While living in Warriewood, she starts to do some research on her parent's deaths. One day she finds their graves and learns that her father died in a drowning accident. She starts asking people about her mother's death, but she doesn't believe any of the stories she hears. Will she ever find out how her mother died, or will the truth be kept from her forever?

I liked this book because Winter's personality is similar to mine. If I was Winter, I would have wanted to find out how my parents died too, because I believe that you should always know the truth about your family. If you like moving books, read this one to find out if Winter ever discovers the truth.

Disappointing
After reading and liking several of John Marsden's book, I looked forward to reading this one.

Unfortunately, this reads more like a rough first draft than a completed novel: sub-plots are left unresolved, characters react completely out of character (and no explanation for why is given, or even acknowledgement that the characters has just acted oddly is given), and the main character, unlike Marsden's other "troubled" teen female protagonists, does not evoke any sympathy. ...
