Product Description

This is a story about Francis Ledwidge, a Poet Laureate of Ireland in the early 20th Century. It is also a story about the War and the symbolism of a blackbird in his life. Life in Ireland at this time was very difficult. The book describes the person and the events that both hindered and helped his journey in a difficult place and time. The book is written with great sensitivity and melancholy, which is part of the Irish condition. It will touch all with its poetic narrative. It will affect all who read it, especially those who will relate to the difficulties of life and whom rejoice over the written word.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fairy story
Very disappointing read, written almost in a childrens book style, and with no index, introduction etc.
I expected some details of the life of the poet Francis Ledwidge and I received a work of fiction for my trouble.Almost unreadable such was the immature style and why spoil a good story. I must have missed the point, Ledwidge lost his father when 4 years of age yet this book says it was his father who brought him up.Read the poem 'my mother' this tells you about his life, it was the very nature of his early life and the struggle of his mother that helps enlighten some of his poetry. If you wish to find out details of the life of the poet read Alice Curtayne's excellent boigraphy.
I am in awe of the genius of Ledwidge and a book like this is great disappointment if you wish to find out the REAL events associated with his short life.

4-0 out of 5 stars As lovely as Ireland is green
A truly lyrical and inspiring book full of powerful visual imagery and fully developed characters.May we have a second work?

4-0 out of 5 stars Betty's voice
Betty's beautiful voice resounds throughout her story. Her sensitivity to detail, her sincerity of purpose vitalize the tale--reflecting her passion for her subject.Melodic and lilting as the Irish harp, her words etch a lyric of love and compassion for her ancestry.Congrates on a labor of love! ... Chapters: Ireland and World War I, D. D. Sheehan, Tom Kettle, Willie Redmond, Francis Ledwidge, Henry Harrison, Tom Barry, Stephen Lucius Gwynn, William Bernard Hickie, Liam O'flaherty, William Orpen, John Lavery, William Redmond, Emmet Dalton, Sir John Esmonde, 14th Baronet, Bryan Mahon, Charles Gwynn, Denis Rolleston Gwynn, Willie Doyle, List of Irish People in World War I, Sydney Minch, Colman O'flaherty. Excerpt: During World War I (or the Great War) (1914-1918), Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, which entered the war in August 1914 as one of the Entente Powers, along with France and Russia, when it declared war to halt the military expansion of the Central Powers, consisting of the German Empire, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Bulgaria. The Irish experience of the war was complex and its memory divisive. Both nationalist and unionist leaders initially backed the British war effort. Their followers, both Catholic and Protestant, served extensively in the British forces, many in specially raised units. Over 200,000 Irishmen fought in the war, in several theatres and just under 30,000 died. However, a smaller, more radical element of Irish nationalists took the opportunity of the war to launch an armed rebellion against British rule, with German help. In addition, Britain's intention to impose conscription on Ireland in 1918 provoked widespread resistance and thereby remained unimplemented. Finally, the Great War was immediately followed by prolonged period of political violence from 1919-1923 after which Ireland was partitioned and much of it separated from Britain in the Irish Free State. For this reason, many nationalists were reluctant for many years to recognise the part that Irishmen had played in the war on... ... Read more

Excerpt: Thomas Michael "Tom" Kettle (9 February 1880 9 September 1916) was an Irish journalist, barrister, writer, poet, soldier, economist and Home Rule politician. As a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for East Tyrone from 1906 to 1910 at Westminster. He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913, then on the outbreak of World War I in 1914 enlisted for service in an Irish regiment where in 1916 he met his death on the Western Front. He was one of the leading figures of the generation who at the turn of the twentieth century gave new intellectual life to Irish party politics, and to the constitutional movement towards All-Ireland Home Rule. The Great War brought both of these and his life to an end. A gifted speaker with an incisive mind and devastating wit, his death was regarded as a great loss to Ireland's political and intellectual life . Thomas Kettle BL. in 1905 Thomas was the seventh of twelve children of Andrew J. Kettle (1833-1916) a progressive farmer , and founder of the Irish Land League, and his wife, Margaret, daughter of Laurence McCourt of St. Margarets Finglas, north co. Dublin, and was born in Artane, Dublin. His father was an exacting stern man, demanding and stubborn, influencing his son Thomas considerably through his political activities, having been involved from an early age in the constitutional movement to achieve Irish Home Rule. Andrew J. joined Michael Davitt in the foundation of the Irish Land League and was one of the signatories of the "No Rent Manifesto". He adhered to Parnell in his crisis of 1890, and stood for election as a nationalist candidate on several occasions. Thomas was raised in comfor...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3218027 ...
