Fairy story
Very disappointing read, written almost in a childrens book style, and with no index, introduction etc.
I expected some details of the life of the poet Francis Ledwidge and I received a work of fiction for my trouble.Almost unreadable such was the immature style and why spoil a good story. I must have missed the point, Ledwidge lost his father when 4 years of age yet this book says it was his father who brought him up.Read the poem 'my mother' this tells you about his life, it was the very nature of his early life and the struggle of his mother that helps enlighten some of his poetry.If you wish to find out details of the life of the poet read Alice Curtayne's excellent boigraphy.
I am in awe of the genius of Ledwidge and a book like this is great disappointment if you wish to find out the REAL events associated with his short life.

Excerpt: During World War I (or the Great War) (1914-1918), Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, which entered the war in August 1914 as one of the Entente Powers, along with France and Russia, when it declared war to halt the military expansion of the Central Powers, consisting of the German Empire, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Bulgaria. The Irish experience of the war was complex and its memory divisive. Both nationalist and unionist leaders initially backed the British war effort. Their followers, both Catholic and Protestant, served extensively in the British forces, many in specially raised units. Over 200,000 Irishmen fought in the war, in several theatres and just under 30,000 died. However, a smaller, more radical element of Irish nationalists took the opportunity of the war to launch an armed rebellion against British rule, with German help. In addition, Britain's intention to impose conscription on Ireland in 1918 provoked widespread resistance and thereby remained unimplemented. Excerpt: Thomas Michael "Tom" Kettle (9 February 1880 9 September 1916) was an Irish journalist, barrister, writer, poet, soldier, economist and Home Rule politician. As a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for East Tyrone from 1906 to 1910 at Westminster. He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913, then on the outbreak of World War I in 1914 enlisted for service in an Irish regiment where in 1916 he met his death on the Western Front. He was one of the leading figures of the generation who at the turn of the twentieth century gave new intellectual life to Irish party politics, and to the constitutional movement towards All-Ireland Home Rule. The Great War brought both of these and his life to an end. A gifted speaker with an incisive mind and devastating wit, his death was regarded as a great loss to Ireland's political and intellectual life .
