Product Description
When once caught in the maelstrom of stock speculation the average man becomes more or less mesmerized, and at critical moments his conservatism, his resolutions and his theories all take flight. Under the discomposing influence of a rapid succession of changing values and alternating impulses he loses his perspective, is incapable of calm reasoning, and is likely to do precisely the opposite of what he had intended to do. -from The Psychology of Speculation

How do you keep your head when large sums of money are at stake? What are the greatest psychology stumbling blocks to successful trading? How can we beat the market by learning more about ourselves?

This sensible little guide teaches us how to be aware of our own assumptions and prejudices while trading so that we will expect them when they begin to interfere with our reasoning, and so that we can counter them before we do ourselves a financial injury.

Originally published in a private edition, Harper's Wall Street wisdom is again available to show us how to be enlightened speculators. ... Read more

Product Description

A pioneering poet whose verse had a profound impact on Shakespeare and the English Renaissance, Surrey was nevertheless branded by one contemporary as “the most foolish proud boy that is in England.” He was the heir of England’s premier nobleman, first cousin to two of Henry VIII’s wives---Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard---and best friend and brother-in-law to the King’s illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy.

Celebrated for his chivalrous deeds both on and off the battlefield, Surrey became, at only twenty-eight, the King’s Lieutenant General in France. He had his portrait painted more often than any other Tudor courtier, but his confident exterior masked insecurity and loneliness. A man of intriguing contradictions, Surrey was both law enforcer and law breaker, political conservative and religious reformer. The self-styled guardian of the traditional nobility, he was recklessly outspoken against the “new erected men” of the court. Cromwell was a “foul churl,” Paget a “mean creature,” and the problems that beset Henry VIII’s realm were, Surrey hinted, “the bitter fruit of false concupiscence.”

He witnessed and was inextricably caught up in all the major events of the reign: the break with Rome, the Pilgrimage of Grace, the Reformation, the executions of his two cousins, Henry’s French wars, and the brutal power struggle at the end of the reign to which he fell victim. His life, replete with drunken escapades, battlefield heroics, conspiracy, and courtroom drama, sheds new light on the opulence and artifice of a dazzling, but deadly, age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fills in some gaps
Although this book was very helpful in filling the gaps usually by general histories, I found the depiction of Earl of Surrey to be flat and two-dimensional.After finishing the book, I didn't really feel that I knew him much better than before I started. However, I did have a much clearer understanding of the difficult tightrope walked by every person who came into contact with the court during this stressful era. ... Product Description
Of the many published accounts to come out of William Henry Jackson's long career, The Pioneer Photographer, first published in 1929, is widely accepted as Jackson's most trusted autobiography of his early pioneering days and his first eight years (1870-1878) as the official photographer for the US Geological Survey. This reconstruction of Jackson's classic work, long out of print, presents one hundred sixty photographs and early drawings, paintings and lithographs by America's best-known landscape photographer, drawing on Jackson's diaries, other published accounts, and importantly his annotations of The Pioneer Photographer to create a complete and multidimensional view of the unfolding nineteenth-century American West. Editor Bob Blair has significantly expanded Jackson's original autobiography, reprinted here in full with the author's annotations, with seventy additional photographs, drawings, and paintings, and extensive excerpts from Jackson's writings, much of the new material drawn from archives and historical collections and never before published. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but more words, artwork than photographs
I've just started reading the book, the biographical sections are extensive and interesting. They might, in fact, be the best part of the book (together with the update/ annotations).
I was hoping for a large collection of Mr. Jacksons photographs but instead got more text than anything. You do get some photographs but they tend to be small, not full page (they are interesting). I didn't count them but believe that there are more sketches and paintings than photographs of the man's subjects.
One thing I noted was that the editor of this edition writes that many of the photographs are "attributed to", meaning either no one is certain of the photographer but think he did them or even that an employee actually did the work.
If what you really want are 1870's photographs you'll have to find another Jackson book somewhere to get many of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must for any serious student of photography
Howard Bossen carefully examines Henry Holmes Smith's many contributions to the art of photography, as an innovative practitioner, critic, and educator. He thoroughly discusses Smith's impact in all these areas with accuracy and care. This book is a worthy examination of this somewhat overlooked master of photography.

He covers Smith's early association with Lazslo Moholy-Nagy that led to his teaching the first photography class at the New Bauhaus in Chicago, as well as the important interactions that the students and staff had on Smith.

Mr. Bossen wonderfully describes Smith's relationship withlight, an essential of the photographic process, hence the title, Man of Light. He explains the dye-transfer process that Smith adapted to create extaordinary color variations of black and white originals.

He faithfully covers Smith's contibutions as an educator and founder of the Society for Photographic Education. He enlightens the reader on Smith's Herculean efforts to promote the importance of photography as a fine art by his examination of Smith's essays and critical analysis.

No serious photographic education would be complete without attention being paid to this stellar work.

The copies of this book that I have seen are hardbound textbook quaility. ... Read more
