5-0 out of 5 stars Best, well written, most concise C++ book out there.
After going through several C++ books, I switched back to Winston's 3/4" paperback from 1994. In brief, it is a very well written, concise, and clear book well suited for those that would like to learn C++ on their own. It is leaps and bounds better than any programming book I have ever owned. The idea of learning C++ by building a simple train car program may seem hokey, but it allows you to get a solid groundwork in which to build specific platform programming experience.

Pros: Very well written. Teaches you the concepts and building blocks, so that by the time you've gone through the book, you have a very good understanding of the language and its philosophy.

Cons: It is a touch outdated. The book was written before the ISO C++, so a few minor things have changed. With a decent compiler, and a few Google searches, you will have no problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK forC++ beginners
I think this book is good for someone who has programmed in C and wouldlike to gently move "on to C++". However, it has twoshortcomings: 1) the author uses the same monotonous example of trains throughout the text. 2) there are quite a few concepts in C++ (e.g. copy constructors, operator overloading, streaming) that the author spendslittle or no time on.3) the author's explanation of templates at the endof the book seemed somewhat confusing, and could havebeen

simplified.

On the positive side, I think it provides a good placeto start for a programmer who needs a gentle introduction to C++ and knowssome C.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Introduction to C++
In my experience, On to C++ is by far the best introduction, and perhaps one of the best books in general, on C++. It is extremely well written and allows one to move from procedural programming to object orientedprogramming very quickly, especially if you are already familiar withC.

It is not comprehensive, and is not meant to be, but covers all of thebasics of the language quite well. The use of essentially the same examplethroughout the book strengthens it as a tutorial, but weakens it somewhatas a reference text.

5-0 out of 5 stars On To C
SUMMARY:Excellent book!My highest recommendation if you need to get up and running with text-based C and you are starting from zero.

DISCUSION:This book separates itself from almost all others by sticking with teachingthe reader how to write programs in C.Topics such as Windows programming, details about using specific products (Visual C++, C++ Builder, etc.), andhistorical anecdotes about the history of computing are left for others tocover. These subjects are indeed interesting, but the novice is easilyoverwhelmed by them (for me, the transition from Apple IIe line numberbased BASIC to structured, compiled programs was rough enough!).Winston'sapproach allows the programmer to begin solving problems quickly.Once theuser is used to the language and has a few programs under his belt, he canthink about tackling K & R, Schildt, Perry, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Book.
On To C++ is a very well written book.It describes every topic clearly and completely, and does not skip over anything. However, it is a little short, and it does not explain some non-C++ parts completely (it gives aVERY skimpy paragraph or so on reading data from files). Also, it does notgive any recommendations or even basic instructions for buying and usingcompilers. On To C++ describes and explains C++ very well, but it issomewhat sketchy in describing certain areas related to programming. ... Product Description

Annie Henry is full of energy, and somehow she always seems to find herself in the middle of all the excitement.

Following in the footsteps of her father, the famous patriot Patrick Henry, young Annie Henry faces the American Revolution with courage and a commitment to fighting for liberty in any way she can. Whether that means riding a horse to spread news about the war or caring for her family while her father is away, Annie is determined to do her part to bring freedom to America.

Yet life is not easy for Annie. Her father is often away for long periods of time working to see that the revolution succeeds. When he becomes governor in colonial Virginia, Annie has to get used to the life of a politician’s daughter and to a new school away from her old friends. In the midst of her adventures and her frustrations, Annie’s faith is growing; and she is learning more about her need for God as she faces the challenges of growing up.

This book includes all four of the action-packed Adventures in the American Revolution:

  • Annie Henry and the Secret Mission
  • Annie Henry and the Birth of Liberty
  • Annie Henry and the Mysterious Stranger
  • Annie Henry and the Redcoats

4-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Henry
The definitive book on the life of Patrick Henry, this one covers it all. I believe I have read every volume available on Henry's life, and I believe all others have used Wirt's work as their primary resource.William Wirt spent over forty years researching for this book.

Being completed in 1853, this book also serves as an illustration to the fluid dynamics of the English language.Read in its original unrevised edition, the reader may have difficulty with its frequently misspelled words and early eighteen hundreds sentence structure.Even with my deep admiration of Henry, I had difficulty holding my focus on this sometimes quite dry read. But there is so much to learn about Henry from this work, that I would also classify this as a must read for any Henry enthusiast.

This book details where other works fall far short. If you're not an ardent fan of Henry and are just looking for a good read and basic look into his life, I highly recommend David J. Vaughan's Give Me Liberty: The Uncompromising Statesmanship of Patrick Henry, but if you are looking for an indepth look at the one of the world's great orators, this is the book for you.

As a society, we remember Henry for his infamous and rousing Give Me Liberty speech before the Continental Congress. This book hardly even touches on the topic, but looks instead at the Patrick Henry that most people know very little about. His life's accomplishments are matched by few and deserve a closer look. ... Product Description
The Psalms run like a golden thread through the beautiful garment of Orthodox and Eastern Catholic worship. In addition to inspiring the public prayer of the church, the Psalms are an indispensable part of the private devotions of all who seek a closer relationship with God. Most important, however, the Psalms point toward the ultimate liberation of humanity from sin, death and despair through Jesus Christ. Father Pat Reardon, drawing on his long experience as an Episcopal minister, and then as a priest in the Orthodox Church (Antiochene), has produced a work of depth and devotion. He tightly understands that one cannot truly probe the deep meaning of the Psalms unless one understands them in the light of the redemption brought by Christ. Fr. Reardon beautifully relates each Psalm to its place within the Divine Liturgy and shows us how they reveal Our Lord to us, if we prayerfully ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Devotional Resource
This book is a great way to begin to identify those Psalms (which are many) in which the Messiah is either directly speaking, is spoken of, or is inferred. It also points out many practical applications of the Psalms to the life of the church.I was a friendly, mild skeptic when I purchased this book, having heard many seek to find the Lord in what seemed like every syllable of the Old Testament."He's got to be in there somewhere!!!"This "Where's Waldo" approach to bible study has led to many excesses, and may seem as though the student is "seeking to find Christ" under every rock, behind every bush, and around every corner in the Old Testament! That is NOT what's going on in this fine book. The author has truly blessed me through his patient, responsible treatment of the Scriptures.Thank you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Just my speed
The commentary on each psalm is a short essay written for weekly publication in the priest's church bulletin. Tthe commentaries are concise and worthwhile. I find they complement the online Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary on the Bible, as far as a Christological approach to commentary goes. Thankfully, this is not a modern, historical-critical commentary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encounter Christ in a surprising place - the Psalms!
The Psalms have long been the Church's "prayer-book," but many Christians today find it difficult to truly pray these ancient Jewish prayers - which often contain unknown or even troubling imagery - with a Christian spirit. Fr. Reardon does a great service to the Church with "Christ in the Psalms", which allows us to read each of the Psalms in a truly Christological fashion.

Drawing from the traditions of both the East and the West, Fr. Reardon, an Orthodox priest and editor of Touchstone magazine, takes each Psalm and paints a prayerful, Christian portrait. I especially appreciate that he incorporates how a particular Psalm has been used by both Eastern and Western monks in their liturgy of the hours. As the Psalms make up the core of monastic prayer, and the monastic life is the heart of the Church's corporate prayer life, this gives one insight into how the church has interpreted and prayed these Psalms through the centuries.

Each meditation is a perfect length for personal meditation: about 800 words each. This allows one to read the Psalm, read the reflection, then personally meditate on what he has read. Highly recommended for anyone wishing to encounter Christ more deeply in the Psalms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for study of Psalms
This was written by a priest for many years for his congregation to learn about the psalms. He looks at each psalm and uses historical references to help interpret the psalms. This helps those of us who don't know much about the Jews or the outlaying area and cities of that time. This is not something to read straight through, but to pick up every now and then. There is a chapter for every psalm.
Here is a quote from page 55, speaking of psalm 28:

"The setting of this tempest is a giant cedar forest, whose overarching branches assume the contours of a vaulted temple, and through this lofty sylvan shrine the booming voice of God comes pounding and roaring with a terrifying majesty, accompanied by the swishing of the wind and rain, while flashing bolts of lightning split the very trunks of the towering trees: 'In His temple everything speaks glory.'
This is a psalm about God's 'glory' (kavod) and 'holiness. In any language, this is certainly a psalm to be prayed out loud, allowing the words to come rumbling through the soul..."

5-0 out of 5 stars More than one could ever hope for
Christ in the Psalms is a first-class compendium of commentaries on the Bible's prayer book. Moreover, linking commentary with New Testament cites creates a rich repertoire of meditation -- personal or for small groups. The instructions on how to use the book, particularly not to pass quickly one to another, are accurate and meaningful.Written in user-friendly language, this book brings to life in unique ways material worthy of contemplation.Great resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
I read this book when I was 13 and I really liked it! I haven't read it since then but I would still recomend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Or Give Me Death
Sixteen year old Patsy and young Anne live in a huge house in Scotchtown with their mom, dad, and siblings. Patsy discovers that someone in her family is going mad, but she doesn't want to tell anyone. When they discover secrets that might hurt someone, they don't know what to do. Many things worry them and if they say anything they could turn everythng upside down. Patsy and Anne make the reader laugh, be happy, and sometimes even sad.
This a great book that is full of secrets, rumors, and historical information. This book is recommended for all people that like good books.

1-0 out of 5 stars So bad it's hilarious!
Ann Rinaldi's "historical" novel about Patrick Henry's family is an abomination. I suspect that she used Williamsburg ghost tours as the basis for her "research." Every page demonstrates a thorough lack of information and even worse -- a complete contempt for the reader.

On a brighter note, Or Give Me Death is currently being passed around by history teachers and interpreters for a little comic relief. If you have some familiarity with history, this novel is funnier than Captain Billy's Whiz Bang!

5-0 out of 5 stars Or Give Me Death -Frances
Or Give Me Death - Ann Rinaldi
Frances

Or Give Me Death was a great book. The book was not a true story, but the author Ann Rinaldi made it seem very realistic and interesting. She made this book seem realistic by using actual clothing that they wore back then, and phrases that most families do not use today. She enjoys writing very much, and she puts some of her past into her books as well. She said herself "Real life, as I know it, as I've learned it to be from my newspaper experience and own past, goes into my books." Ann Rinaldi was born in New York City on August twenty-seventh. She lives in New Jersey with her husband Ron Rinaldi. They got married in the year of 1960. She use to write articles in the newspaper, and then she began with her own books. She worked on her first books for many years. She said "My experience in the newspaper business and as a parent gave me so much more to bring to my fiction."Since then Ann Rinaldi wrote many other books and won many awards for them. Before becoming an author of young adult novels, she won an award for being an award winning journalist. She also got a New Jersey Press Association First Place Award in 1978 and 1989. The book I read Or Give Me Death was all about a woman who was going crazy, and one of her children was going to inherit the bad blood and go crazy as well. One of her daughters got married, and in the end of the book they got a doctor to put her to sleep. The title of this book comes from the phrase the mother was screaming "Give me liberty, Or give me death." She was saying this because she did not like having her mind all messed up, and wasting her life in bed. She wanted liberty, to be free, or to die peacefully. A few other books she wrote are A Break With Charity, and In My Father's House. There is many more where that came from. There were a few types of clothing I did not know if they were actually invented back then such as bonnets, ginghams, and spectacles, I researched them and found out that they were. To be honest, I usually do not enjoy reading historical fiction books, but when I read this one I actually got into it, and kept wanting to read on. The reason I wanted to read on was because the mother was getting worse everyday, and I really wanted to know what happened to her. I had a neighbor once who got amnesia, and started to lose her mind, she was sort of like the mother in Or Give Me Death. I would recommend this book to people who like reading historical fiction books, and even those who don't, because it was very interesting and catchy. I always wanted to keep on reading. I would definitely consider reading another one of Ann Rinaldi's books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro to Life & Times of Patrick Henry
Just a note to begin: The copy I read was library-bound, not leather. Never heard of leather-binding for this series.

This slim volume serves as a nice introduction (or refresher) to the subject for middle-schoolers on up.

The chapter titles are as follows:

1. Making of a Leader
2. Farmer, Storekeeper, and Lawyer
3. The Parsons' Cause: "Enemies of the Community"
4. "If This Be Treason"
5. Lighting the Flame of the Revolution
6. Sadness at Home
7. "We Must Fight"
8. "Gale from the North"
9. Governor Henry
10. Friends to Fight with Us
11. War and Peace
12. Virtue or Wickedness?
13. We the People?
14. The Blessings of Liberty
15. "Reader... Remember This"

The Kuklas present the material in a generally chronological format. However, there are a few times when they suddenly jump back a few years and/or repeat a bit of information, which seemed unnecessarily redundant to me. (For example, the last paragraph of Ch. 2 states, "The vestry, or church council, hired Patrick Henry to persuade the jury not to pay the parsons the full amount of money they wanted." Then, the end of the first paragraph of Ch. 3 says, "The parish vestry, or council, of a local church had hired him to represent it in court.")

The book has good info on Henry's family, education, and early career(s). But, not surprisingly, it concentrates on his participation in the early colonial protests in the mid-1760s thru early-1770s, his involvement in the early conventions and Congresses, and through the American Revolution. It also discusses Henry's multi-term governorship of Virginia, his concerns with the new U.S. Constitution and efforts to get a Bill of Rights passed, and finally his death in 1799. Various parts of his personal life (e.g., marriage, kids, sickness, business problems) are interwoven throughout, though some areas are a little scarce. There are one or two sections where it seemed that the primary subject (i.e., Henry himself) got somewhat lost in the discussion of the revolutionary events, but it's certainly possible that it was the authors'/publisher's intent, in order to further contextualize Henry's activities within the larger framework of the Revolution.

The authors' writing style flows nicely (though with minor annoyances like those mentioned above) and is well-suited to its primary audience. I caught a couple of minor typos, but nothing that interrupted the flow or would cause a confusion of facts.

As is typical for shorter and youth-oriented books, there are no end/footnotes. There is a 'Timeline' of Henry's life at the end, as well as a helpful Glossary, a short list of 'Additional Resources', a Bibliography, and a brief index.

There are several photos and reproductions of paintings, documents, etc. (many color, others B&W), which I really appreciated. There were a couple here & there that seemed overkill and could have been replaced with more text, which is why I knocked off a fraction of a point for both Content and Style & Structure; but, they still serve to familiarize young readers with people & places in history, which is always a good thing. Overall, well done. I fully intend to check out other volumes in the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile but not complete
I was inspired to get this book after seeing several Patrick Henry Bruce reproductions in art magazine gallery advertisements. Bruce is an excellent painter but never received his due during his lifetime as evidenced by the fact that he is a mere footnote, if mentioned at all, in most art history texts. This catalog raisonne from 1979 is the only one I know of and is therefore invaluable and seminal for those interested in Bruce. These cannot be even close to fully appreciated until they are seen larger and in full color - thesewere the ones I first saw in the gallery advertisements. Overall it is an excellent book and hopefully in the future there will be a more complete reevaluation of his oeuvre with all of his extant paintings reproduced in color. ... Read more
