Product Description
Battles of Life and Death is a collection of compelling essays about the process of becoming a doctor. From the burn unit, to pediatric clinics, to cancer wards, these tales of medical training are "a forceful and moving human experience" (Medical Tribune).

"Emotionally riveting. The writing is taut, accurate and unsentimental. And entertaining as well."

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrible and misleading title
Most of the stories have a psychiatric slant, and are written honestly, without flip, hip, and cool comments currently in vogue. More about the experience of getting to know medicine rather than about David Hellerstein and his "feelings" about it, how tired he is, how overwhelmed, etc.

Good enough to read 2 or 3 times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The fusion of a brilliant doctor and a masterful novelist.
After reading "A Fmaily of Doctors" chronicling the medical achievements of the author's forbears, another book became my desideratum. Fortunately, I found "Loving Touches", a gripping novel peppered with love, sex and infidelity. As the title indicates, "Loving Touches" refers to the tender moments of love, warmth and affection shared by two young married professionals. It also immerses us in the passions and the surprising complexity of modern relationships in our multifaceted society. Hence, one is forced to bring into focus love imperiled by lust found in the darker side of of the human psyche. It will dare us to search deeper into our own lives thereby learning more about ourselves. A Must read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My initial exposure into the field of medical literature
In general I am a mystery and true crime buff. However, a friend of mine whose taste in books I have always admired, strongly suggested I read this book, and I promptly did.It was difficult for me to put down as I found it to be utterly fascinating.Dr. Hellerstein with his literary prowessgives an extraordinary picture of the history of medicine in America (1864to present) by utilizing his own family background. And furthermore, on apersonal level, it includes the author's struggle as he prepares tocontinue the tradition of healing set by his ancestors. It illustrates thetheory that what we truly and earnestly aspire to be, that in some ways weare.A MUST READ for everyone!
