5-0 out of 5 stars A Biography by A Friend
Cynthia Lindsay was born in Great Neck NY and moved to California for school. She worked as a swimmer, skater, actress, and author. She was in "Footlight Parade" (p.83). Boris Karloff was a close and beloved friend, his daughter is her godchild (p.ix). Boris was a passionate gardner. "Dear Boris" was what his friends called him. Researching Boris' life was difficult, family records were destroyed in the London Blitz. Boris migrated from England to Canada in 1909 at age 21, the records of this era are lost (p.xi). But she found sources from fans and Boris' widow. Boris kept working until he died, he never wanted to retire (p.175). He died in February 1969 and had a small private funeral (p.177).

William Henry Pratt was the youngest of a large family (p.2). A legacy allowed Boris to migrate to Canada (p.11). He worked as a laborer until he joined a stock company (p.15). He picked "Boris Karloff" as a stage name. After a few years with stock companies he went to Hollywood and worked as an extra (p.27). Boris kept his secrets (p.33). Little is known about his 2 or 3 marriages in the 1920s (p.37). Boris' part in "Frankenstein" made him famous (Chapter 10), he was a character actor for years. "Many children's fairy tales are far more frightening that `Frankenstein'" (p.64). Boris felt sorry for Bela Lugosi (p.710. [Two exclamation points represent rabbit tracks - page 75.] Cynthia tells how she met Boris, and about life in the 1930s. Boris was an early supporter of the Screen Actor's Guild (pp.90-97). Boris "sang" in "Charlie Chan at the Opera" (p.101).

The remaining chapters cover Boris' life on stage and on screen. He was liked by many but kept his secrets. His daughter Sara learned of his death from the news on TV (p.141). Boris appeared on TV shows in the 1950s. In his last years he suffered from emphysema and arthritis (p.150). But he still worked. "Targets" was his last American film (Chapter 21). Boris played an old horror movie actor who earned a living by guest appearances. It was stitched together from left-overs (p.168), like Frankenstein's Monster. It is a low-budget message movie that wasn't as successful as "The Night of the Living Dead". This is followed by photos for Boris from his many films from 1916 to 1972, and a catalog of the films (pp.235-273). Note how many times he played a villain in his early films.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tender and insightful look into a craftsman's life.
William Henry Pratt aka Boris Karloff was perhaps one of the most underated and illused actors in film history. Cynthia Lyndsay's book provides a most personal and loving journey into this gentleman's life. Included too in her portrait is a concise history of acting in the early 20th century as well as a detailed portrait of the actor's craft. Karloff was the consumate professional on stage and screen and off. This book is highly reccomended for any interested in the craft of acting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the love of Boris
This book will catch your heart.

It is slim enough to carry around to reread in odd moments. There seems to be always something in its spare prose to bring quiet peace and reflection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boris is a book and a cat to know!
"Boris" by Cynthia Rylant is a book made entirely in poem form, where a young, unmarried woman cannot resist the pet shop she passes on her way to work. She finally stops in, promising herself a girl cat, but big, gray Boris catches her eye, laying next to his sister. So she ends up with two cats, and Boris is somecat who opens the woman's eyes to the world and recalls memories she'd forgotten.

She tells of the quirks and mysteries of Boris, the things he does, his pride. She tells of her life before him and the cats who shared her home ahead of him. Her worries and the adventures Boris has on his ten day disappearance.

"Boris" is a rather peaceful book, and a quick read (74 pages). But the author's words will stay with you, and you'll look at your cat after reading it.

Summary: BORIS is a big gray cat who loves sleeping and playing, exploring, and hunting. And his owner loves him for all his simple cat ways. But Boris, typical as he may be, is part of a much larger story in this moving exploration of love, longing, compassion, and most of all, the continuous give and take of companionship.

Reader's thoughts: At first glance I would've thought this book was actually a short story told from the point of view of a cat named Boris. In all honesty, the moment I opened the book is when I found out it was actually a poetry book told from the point of view of a nameless owner who happened to buy Boris (the cat) and his sister (also a cat), though reluctantly. From there the story continues to describe Boris' life with his owner, and his relationship with his sister who is honorably mentioned in the book several times. It's a short read, but its full of the depth you'd get from a book and probably more. Boris' behavior is described just like a cat's much to my delight. It reminded me much of two of my own cats (who happened to be spoiled tabby cats). From his mishaps -breaking his leg, beating down an old cat--- to his lazy behavior -sleeping in other peoples houses, usually annoying them to watching kitty TV-- this book does justice to what it's about. The book is full of humor and heartfelt drama which really got to me. I recommend this book to anyone who loves good poetry stories and cats (9-9-05).--- [a 5 out of 5]

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing ...
This tale is true and a little gritty.Definitely not, Hallmark-ish.It chronicles a segment of life lived by, Boris, the main character. And, yes, I mean character. The author uses humor in such a clever way.Humor that sneaks up and surprises the reader.I read this book late one night and in the quiet of a very quiet house could not keep from laughing out loud. The humor softens the hardness and rounds out the edges. This book is a quick read.An excellent re-read.A small bit of poetic wisdom to keep handy for those days when life catches up and threatens to over take you.Slip into this tale, enjoy a good laugh, and rest assured that if you see life for what it truly is, you will always experience happy endings. ... POP QUIZ

By Cynthia Boris (1999)

RATING: 3/5 Stakes

Pop Quiz is a surprisingly difficult little collection of Buffy trivia questions. Covering Seasons One through Three, the book asks everything from what music is playing when Giles arrives home to find Jenny's body in "Passion" to the name of the boy murdered in the woods in "Beauty and the Beasts." Not all questions are so difficult, and the book is divided up into several different types of questions: some chapters ask you to identify a specific quote, others ask the meaning of a pop culture reference, while still others are devoted to specific people or episodes.

At the end of each chapter is a score box, and if you add up the scores for each chapter you find whether you're a Cordette (the lowest of the low in Buffy trivia knowledge), a member of the Xander Brigade, a student in the Willow Study Group, an Honorary Watcher, or, best of all, the next Slayer. Judging from my score, I'll be hanging out with Willow a lot--which doesn't bother me one bit. Although probably not something one wants to sit down and read from front to back, this is the perfect book for a long bus or car ride with a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a book.
In the internet, you'll find like hundreds of Buffy quiz, right? If you don't know the right answer..You'll think where the hell did he knows the right ans. Well, if you buy this book, you'll know those quiz too. i promise.

4-0 out of 5 stars don't have one
I thought htis book was very good. Just as the televisio series is. But could have been a little more detailed. So you don't actually feel you are reading a book. But watching the television. But out of most of the books i read this would probaly be a good one tell others about. Because, well it is written pretty good. And if you like he series, and like to read then this would be a good book to read before going to bed. And for the guys to, because they will fall asleep thinking about Sarah(buffy).

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's a testyou will want to take.
This is just pure fun. Cynthia Boris has put together great questions. A true fan should be measured by their Buffy IQ. I was amazed by the numberof questions I could answer and a little frightened too. I think I may havewatched some of these episodes one too many times. Then again no that'simpossible, I didn't answer all the questions correctly. I will have tostudy and take the tests again. This is a great book to share with yourfriends. A must for every would be scoobie.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
