All of the books, with the exception of one, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, penned by Alex Haley, is based on hearsay, conjecture and opinions. There are too, a lot of Internet sites devoted to Malcolm. Most of them are of the historical nature, while some of them were inspired by the "love" for him. I fall into the latter category. For me, my first introduction of Malcolm came when I was 7 years of age. It was 1963, the year that John Kennedy was assassinated. My uncle (who was more like a father to me) had taken me, as we often did, to this dining hall by the name of Father Divines. I recall being sadden by the death of Kennedy and had been crying throughout that day. When we arrived at the hall, one of the elders came up to me and said that he had heard from my uncle that I had been crying over the death of the president and he asked me "why"? I do not recall my exact words but I know that they weren't many, because I really didn't know why? Perhaps because the whole world was crying? Whatever my answer was, it prompted the elder to take me into a room to listen to a "black man" he said, "that he knows will change my life forever". That man was Malcolm X! And as prophetic as it might appear, the elder was right. From that point on, I could not get enough of him. And as I grew older, I looked to him for strength, guidance, wisdom and understanding. Every word he said, I clung onto like a newborn to its' mother. His footsteps are those that I follow. His heartbeat is that which I hear. For like the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, and before him, Master Fard, he was chosen to raise my people from the depths by which we were plunged. He was chosen to "go after the young people". And that he did. He found me. A little seven year old who had a lot of questions but was getting no answers. Three decades has passed since his murder, and the answers are ringing louder in my ears. Each one MUST reach one! Each one MUST teach one!

For more detailed information on where to start your search please take a look at the Malcolm X FAQ If you need more detailled information on the books, please e-mail me Currently on order are: If you have seen Spike Lee´s movie "Malcolm X", then you will find many parallels to Jimmy Baldwin´s screenplay on Malcolm, although Baldwin isn´t mentioned in the liner notes of Lee´s movie. I personally enjoyed this book, although you should have read the autobiography, since Baldwin changes a few names and creates a few new characters out of several existing people. But if you need to show a friend of yours something about Malcolm, this book is a short and easy to read introduction.

However, when a favorite teacher told Malcolm his dream of becoming a lawyer was "no realistic goal for a nigger," Malcolm lost interest in school. He dropped out, spent some time in Boston, Massachusetts working various odd jobs, and then traveled to Harlem, New York where he committed petty crimes. His charisma, drive and conviction attracted an astounding number of new members. Malcolm was largely credited with increasing membership in the Nation of Islam from 500 in 1952 to 30,000 in 1963. The crowds and controversy surrounding Malcolm made him a media magnet. He was featured in a week-long television special with Mike Wallace in 1959, The Hate That Hate Produced, that explored fundamentals of the Nation of Islam and Malcolm's emergence as one of its most important leaders. After the special, Malcolm was faced with the uncomfortable reality that his fame had eclipsed that of his mentor Elijah Muhammad.

We're just happy she made it through the night," Nina Johnson, a spokeswoman at the Jacobi Hospital Burn Unit where Shabazz, 63, was being treated for third-degree burns, said. At the request of the family, the hospital would not provide any other details about her condition. The arraignment of her grandson has been postponed until Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. (EST), after a request by his acting attorney Percy Sutton. During a brief court appearance, the youth spoke only once, when the judge asked his name. He was wearing a dark blue oversized sweat shirt, blue jeans, white socks, and sandals. He came into the Bronx family court handcuffed. Sutton asked that the handcuffs be removed and they were, but he was hand-cuffed again when he left the courtroom. The boy faces juvenile delinquency charges. Because of his age, Tuesday's hearing will be closed to the public. "The boy is a child of trauma. He is a disturbed child. In his life there has been nothing but tragedy. He has spent time in youth houses," Bill Tatum, publisher of the Amsterdam News and a close friend of Shabazz, told Reuters.

Alex Haley , Malcolm asserted that his father may have been killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan. His mother, stricken by the death of her husband and the demands of providing for the family, was committed to a mental institution. Leaving school after the eighth grade, Malcolm made his way to New York, working for a time as a waiter at Smalls Paradise in Harlem. Malcolm began selling and using drugs, turned to burglary, and, in 1946, was sentenced to a ten-year prison term on burglary charges. While in prison Malcolm became acquainted with the Black Muslim sect, headed by Elijah Muhammad , and was quickly converted. Unlike Muhammad, Malcolm sought publicity, making provocative and inflammatory statements to predominantly white civic groups and college campus audiences. When, in 1963, he characterized the Kennedy assassination as a case of "chickens coming home to roost," he was suspended from the Black Muslim movement by Elijah Muhammad.
