Her father, Willie Lee was a sharecropper and her mother; Minnie Grant was a domestic woman. Alice started school when she was four. She discovered she loved writing poetry and reciting speeches in front of crowds. At the age of eight, she lost the sight in her right eye as a result of a pellet bullet. She attended Spelman College and Sarah Lawrence College which both had a huge impact on her. The Color Purple was published in 1983 and it went on to become a bestseller. Summary At the end, Celie discovered that her stepfather had left her and Nettie a house and a dry goods store in Georgia, she returned to Georgia as an independent woman. My Review After learning about the happenings in Alice Walker’s life, I can understand how she was influenced to write in such a realistic way. The reason I enjoyed The Color Purple was because I knew how to interpret it. I think the novel is unique in its dealing with spiritual survival and exploring the oppressions and triumphs of black women. I enjoyed contemplating the issue of the equality of women. I think this issue still remains today, but I think this book opened doors to help people shape their views of this particular issue. I think racism is handled very well in this book because not only does the reader experience the stereotypical whites suppressing blacks, but also the reader is introduced to blacks suppressing blacks. I was very intrigued by this book because of the realization of events that take place are compared greatly to events that currently take place. I recommend this book to anybody that enjoys exploring controversial issues.
