He was left an orphan in infancy, taken away by a sea-captain when seven years old, and trained as a sailor, in which calling he passed his early life. In 1819 he became a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church about 1830 he became a Bethel missionary in Boston. He served as chaplain on the frigate "Macedonian," which took supplies to the famishing Irish in 1827, and delivered addresses in Cork and Glasgow. "Father Taylor," as he was called, mingled nautical terms and figures in his discourses, and by his wit, pathos, and imagination controlled the moods and wrought upon the feelings of his hearers in a remarkable degree.

Z TAYLOR, Edward, clergyman, born in England in 1642; died in Westfield, Massachusetts, 29 June, 1729 He began his education in England with the intention of following the ministry, left that country on account of measures that were taken against non-conformists, and on his arrival in Massachusetts in 1668 entered Harvard, where he was graduated in 1671. He was invited to become minister to the people of Westfield, and arrived there Oh 3 December, 1671, but, owing to the insecurity of that frontier settlement and the small number of its inhabitants, the church was not organized till 27 August, 1679. He performed the duties of minister there, and for much of the time those of physician also, until his death. He left several manuscript volumes, including a "Commentary on the Four Gospels," "Christographia, or a Discourse on the Virtues and Character of Christ," and poems in English and in Latin.

Trowbridge, Brief History of the Tenth Michigan Cavalry. Detroit, 1905 The papers of this University of Michigan professor of German include one letter (June 5, 1865) written by Stephen Van Rennslaer Thomas to his wife from Lenoir Station, Tenn. He was a captain in the 10th Michigan Cavalry, and he tells of a two months' expedition as a part of the Stoneman raid of 1865. They skirmish with the enemy and destroy bridges, trestles, military supplies and property of the Confederate government, especially around High Point and Salisbury, N.C. After Johnston's surrender, the cavalry was sent in pursuit of Jefferson Davis but the 4th Michigan Cavalry found him first. Thomas's discharge certificate (Nov. 11, 1865) is also included. Thomas was from Lapeer, Mich. A finding aid for this collection is available in the library.

Rowe Students may recoil from Taylor's overly didactic, seemingly aestheticallyrough or unpolished poetry, in part because he seems too preoccupied withissues of sin and salvation, which they find alien. The fundamental needis to familiarize students with basic Puritan concepts, biblical sourcesand allusions, and the meditative tradition. This background allows studentsand teachers to move beyond the easy post-Romantic definition of the poetryas "lyric" which locks the class into a quick survey of onlythe occasional poems. Taylor may also seem both too easy ("doesn'the tell it all?") and too complicated, because of arcane word choices,the curious compounding of images, and the plethora of biblical images. The organization of selections in The Heath Anthology permitsone for the first time to trace Taylor's chronological development as apoet and also emphasizes a more personalized Taylor. By clustering the Meditations and engaging students in playing with the multiple meaningof curious words, the poetry comes alive as an intricate orchestrationof recurrent themes and interconnected images. The point is to captureTaylor's imaginative flexibility as much as his tortured angst, while atthe same time seeing all of his poetry as part of an overriding concernwith personal preparation for heaven and with how Taylor as poet can bestserve Godand in what language.

Extractions: Celebrated today as colonial Americas most prolific and inventive poet, Edward Taylor was virtually unpublished in his lifetime. Not until the twentieth century did Thomas Johnson unearth Taylors long buried manuscripts at the Yale University Library and in 1937 publish the first selections from Taylors Preparatory Meditations (16821725) and Gods Determinations touching his Elect (c. 1680). These collections revealed Taylor to be a frontier parson with a secret passion for the confessional lyrics and versified theological allegories popular among seventeenth-century English poets and clerics. Despite Taylors prominence as minister of the Congregational Church in Westfield for fifty-eight years until his death on June 24, 1729, details of his life remain rudimentary. Most likely born in 1642 in Sketchley, Leicestershire, England, the son of a yeoman farmer, Taylor often adopts quaint colloquialisms and the imagery of provincial farming and weaving in his later poems. According to great-grandson Henry Wyllys Taylors family memoir (1848), Taylor studied at Cambridge University, although certain proof is lacking. As a Protestant dissenter, he was buoyed by Oliver Cromwells Puritan Commonwealth (16491660), but after the Restoration under Charles II, his refusal to sign the 1662 Act of Uniformity probably prevented Taylor from teaching school, worshiping, or pursuing a licensed clerical career. His earliest verse and later sermons virulently satirize Popish and Anglican worship as well as other heresies (such as Quakerism) that threatened an orthodox Calvinist theology and congregational polity.

Extractions: TAYLOR, Edward L., was b. Yorkshire, Eng., and was a year old when he crossed the ocean. He was raised in Nassagweya Tp., and came to Puslinch in 1885, purchasing the McGibbon shop at Aberfoyle, which he has since operated, except for a period of four years, when he bought the J. C. Smith farm, returning to the shop on 1902. In 1903 he sold the shop and house to James Gilmour. He owns a house and lot it Aberfoyle, also a farm of 100 acres, lot 14, rear con. 7, which he rents. He is a Methodist and a Conservative. Mr. Taylor was Trustee of the Aberfoyle school for three years, and Sept., 1905, he was appointed collector of the Township in place of John Smith, deceased. He m. Annie C. Davidson. Issue: William, Calgary; Annetta , at home; Edward J., in Hammersley's mill at Aberfoyle; Charles H., Gueph; Nelles H., Norma, d. in infancy; Gladys G., Norma H. and Marjory I, at Park Hill.
