Rowling. Rankin has written 12 previous crime novels featuring Edinburgh detective inspector John Rebus (that's Edinburgh as in Scotland, for the geographically challenged). But don't let the other-side-of-the-Atlantic setting fool you. Rebus is by no means the upper-crust snobby English detective found in the mysteries of P.D. James or Colin Dexter, Martha Grimes or Elizabeth George. Rather, he walks the tougher streets and shares many more traits with his American counterparts, hard-boiled detectives like L.A.'s Harry Bosch or Louisiana's Dave Robicheaux, respective creations of Michael Connelly and James Lee Burke.
