Extractions: See my main page on Sir Walter for other aspects of his career. Interesting item 1 - Raleigh's first expedition landed and the crew asked the local Indians the name of the country. Raleigh then put a Bill before Parliament to confirm his rights to what translates as "You've got good clothes". Interesting item 2 - Raleigh never landed in North America - he just organised and part-financed the expeditions. However, there is a painting in the National Maritime Museum showing him claiming Virginia for England - evidently by an artist with a good sense of imagination. Raleigh was such a favourite that the Queen refused to permit him to go off on expeditions. Thus it was the ships he provided and the men he instructed who actually went to the "New World" and brought back a number of new discoveries. Interesting item 3 - It was one of his employees (Thomas Hariot - see below) who brought back the first potato to the British Isles and this was first planted on Raleigh's Irish estate.

Extractions: The Sir Walter Raleigh Collection The Sir Walter Raleigh Collection is a distinguished component of the North Carolina Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The collection of over one thousand titles preserves writings by Raleigh, materials about Raleigh, and works on English exploration during the Elizabethan Era. Sir Walter Raleigh (1554?-1618) was born in Devon to a family of modest means but good connections. After serving as a mercenary in France while a teenager, Raleigh joined the court of Elizabeth I where he soon became a favorite of the Queen. A position at court opened doors for Raleigh; in 1584 he took over his half brother Humphrey Gilbert's patent to explore and colonize the east coast of America. Raleigh never traveled to North America himself, but, shortly after gaining the patent, he sent three expeditions to North America. The first, in 1584, was chiefly a reconnaissance mission. The second, in 1585, created a base camp for further exploration. On the final expedition, in 1587, colonists established what was meant to be a permanent settlement on Roanoke Island in present-day North Carolina. The colony failed, and the fate of the colonists remains a mystery. The settlement is known today as "The Lost Colony." Raleigh was the classic "Renaissance man." In addition to being a soldier, courtier, and adventurer, he was also a freethinker, poet, and historian. The Sir Walter Raleigh Collection contains Raleigh's surviving writings in contemporary and modern editions. In addition to Raleigh's own works, it includes volumes on Raleigh, associates of Raleigh such as John White and Humphrey Gilbert, Elizabeth I and her court, and English explorations of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The collection is comprised of a variety of printed materials, including primary texts, scholarly monographs and journals, historical pamphlets, brochures, and ephemera. It also contains some audiovisual materials and a few manuscripts. The collection has been built through gifts and purchases; collecting is ongoing. The following examples of recent acquisitions give some idea of the collection's range:

He is thought to have been born around 1552 at Hayes Barton, Devonshire, England. He fought for the Huguenots in 1596. He privateered with his half brother Sir Humphrey Gilbert. Privateering is when the queen or king gives permission to seize other ships at sea and take their cargos. It was legal pirating. Raleigh was one of Queen Elizabeth's favorite courtiers. He was also well known for his writing and poetry. In 1584, Raleigh sent an expedition from Plymouth,England, which was commanded by Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe. They landed off the coast of what is now known as North Carolina, on July 13,1584.When they returned, they brought back two Native Americans named Manteo and Wanchese. As a result of this, Raleigh was knighted on January 6,1585 by Queen Elizabeth I. Raleigh made Queen Elizabeth mad by secretly marrying Bessie Throckmorton. The queen locked them in the Tower of London. They were released by Christmas.

The Sir Walter Gun Club has been established in the Raleigh area for over 35 years and, at it's present location near Creedmoor, N.C., has facilities for almost all types of shooting activities. Until the end of 1988, the Club's primary range facilities were located near Knightdale, just east of Raleigh. However, due to the development in the area and a desire by club members to expand the facilities, the Club relocated to it's present location approximately 24 miles north of the Crabtree Valley Shopping Center. The club owns 143 acres on which basic pistol, rifle and shotgun ranges have been constructed. Future construction projects include a 300 yard high power rifle range currently under development, separate trap ranges, a bullseye pistol range, an archery field as well as a clubhouse, camping areas and hiking trails. The goal of the Club is to develop one of the best private shooting sports facilities in the State and possible anywhere in the eastern United States. The club currently supports a variety of shooting activities including IPSC Practical Pistol, Cowboy Action Matches, Skeet, High Power Rifle, Smallbore Rifle, Sporting Rifle and Bullseye Pistol. Special events sponsored or hosted by the club include the State Games of North Carolina, the Police Olympics and Scouting merit badge programs. Every December the IPSC shooting program sponsors a "Toys for Tots" match to support the Marine Corps Reserve.
