Extractions: First time novelist and political theorist Rabb has made some pointed observations about the current state of affairs of government, education and general public attitude in this sometimes fascinating tale of a sixteenth century manuscript of a master plan for world domination. As with many books of this type, the ability of the bad guys to know everything and be everywhere sometimes stretches credulity. But interestingly, the male and female leads dont run around hand-in-hand; each has his own important role to fulfill in uncovering the conspiracy, and each is interesting as an individual rather than simply as a plot device. The smart reader will identify The Overseer fairly early in the book, making the too-numerous twists and turns somewhat annoying. Rabb does do something that few other authors have done when writing about mysterious manuscripts he actually reproduces it. Anyone concerned about the current state of political affairs should check this one out. Back to index

Extractions: When elderly Catherine da Costa, a wealthy Manhattan matron, learns she has only a short time to live, she realizes that the family tree will die unless she transfers its legacy to her granddaughters. But Suzanne and Francesca, modern young women in their twenties caught up in trendy environmental causes and ambitious careers, have no interest either in her, or in the past. Catherine almost despairs until, falling asleep before her fireplace, she is visited by the family matriarch, an indomitable Renaissance businesswoman (and true historical figure) named Hannah Mendes, who offers her a partnership. At the ghost's bidding, Catherine manages to temporarily detach her granddaughters from their New York lives, sending them on a magical journey through England, Spain and Venice in search of an ancient manuscript, Hannah's own handwritten memoirs. The trip to humor their grandmother takes on serious new meaning to both girls, as manuscript pages begin to show up, forcing the girls into a powerful encounter with their heritage that will forever challenge their view of their past, their present, and their future.

Et30a.rtf naomi ragen novel peers through chains of marriage. RABBI JACK RIEMER. ChainsAround the Grass by naomi ragen (255 pages, Toby Press, $26.95). http://www.jewishsf.com/bk020809/et30a.shtml
Extractions: RABBI JACK RIEMER Bulletin Correspondent I have long been a Naomi Ragen fan, not only because of the power of her novels, but also because of the moral courage in her journalistic essays. She is an observant Jewish woman, who, nevertheless, writes with outrage about the plight of the agunot within the haredi community, the "chained women" who cannot get a religious divorce. And she is an Israeli who speaks out with moral fervor against the distortions of Israel's situation and against the blatant anti-Semitism that spews forth from the media. Her book "Sotah" was on the best-seller list for 93 weeks in Israel, and her books sell just as well in America. The reason is that she seems to occupy some kind of a middle position between the cultures. She grew up in the non-observant community in America and she is now ba'alat tshuvah a "returnee to the faith" who is living in Israel so she can write for each community about the world of the other. After reading "Chains Around the Grass," Ragen's newest novel, I have new respect for her. For this novel is a thinly disguised autobiography, that tells the story of how she came from terrible poverty to the life of creativity that she now leads. The Talmud says that we should pay special attention to the children of the poor, for, very often, it is from them that students of the Torah emerge, and Ragen's life is proof of the truth of that dictum. She lived in a low-income housing project in Arverne, N.Y., so her mother sent her to a Jewish day school in Far Rockaway simply because the public school in their neighborhood was dangerous. And from that decision came a love for Jewish learning and for the Jewish people that led her to eventually settle in Israel and become a Jewish novelist.
