   Extractions: Nicanor Parra was born in 1914 in Chillan, a small town in southern Chile, the son of a schoolteacher. In 1933 he entered the Instituto Pedagogico of the University of Chile, and qualified as a teacher of mathematics and physics in 1938, one year after his first book appeared: Cancionero sin Nombre . After teaching in Chilean secondary schools, he went in 1943 to Brown University in the U.S. to continue his studies in physics. He returned to Chile as Professor at the University in 1946. Since 1952 Parra has been Professor of Theoretical Physics in Santiago, and has read his poetry in England, France, Russia, Mexico, Cuba, and the United States. He has published several books, including one in collaboration with his great compatriot, Pablo Neruda. "From the first publication of his work in English, Nicanor Parra has taught us - has forced us - to come to poetry with new eyes. More than that, he has made us look with new eyes at all the things of this world : airplanes and pencils, crankshafts and flies and pianos. He has redefined the poem in such a way as only a few have done. And in doing so he has redefined the world in which the poem is written and the hand that writes it ... When Parra's lines seem disconnected, it is because they are connected in a supralogical way in which we are not accustomed to seeing things. When the conventions of cause and result seem to be outraged, they are."

Algunos de sus rasgos más visibles: la incorporación de la métrica del romance, el desarrollo narrativo y la tendencia del que habla a realizar acciones a la manera de un personaje, el uso constante de la personificación y la metáfora con términos referidos a la naturaleza (la del campo chileno) o al mundo religioso (santos, ángeles, sacerdotes), una atmósfera onírica con escasa densidad dramática y, dentro de ella, objetos y espacios manejados como figuras de un juego poético no tocado aún por las asperezas del tiempo histórico. Pero este sistema, al que, descontando la métrica, pertenece asimismo el cuento "Gato en el camino", publicado en 1935 en la Revista Nueva Romancero gitano Cancionero sin nombre Después de 1937, ya titulado en la Universidad de Chile y enseñando en liceos, Parra se mantiene fiel a la idea de una poesía, según sus palabras, "al alcance del grueso público", pero abandona el metaforismo del

Apúrate caminante, no sea que te traduzca; PARA TRADUCIR A SHAKESPEARE/ y comer pescado/ cuidado:/poco se gana con saber inglés; ¿LEARS TRANSLATOR?/ ¡Lears transtraitor!; Judas Iscariote, el traductor más grande de todos los tiempos. Parra se enfrentó a otra empresa monumental cuando le encomendaron traducir del inglés un libro científico de largo aliento: Fundamentos de la física, de Robert Bruce Lindsay y Henry Margenau (1957). La obra, de 583 páginas, cuya edición estuvo al cuidado de Félix Schwartzmann, apareció en 1969 bajo el sello Ediciones de la Universidad de Chile. El poeta se desempeñaba entonces como director del Departamento de Física de la Facultad de Filosofía y Educación. El texto se proponía divulgar entre estudiantes, académicos y, en general, lectores familiarizados con el tema los aspectos teóricos más complejos de esta disciplina y sus implicaciones filosóficas. El antipoeta no volvería a aceptar otra traducción por encargo sino hasta comienzos de los noventa, cuando la Escuela de Teatro de la Universidad Católica de Chile le propuso realizar una versión de El Rey Lear, de William Shakespeare, que sería representada durante la temporada 1992. Decepcionado de las traducciones españolas, Parra se documentó exhaustivamente para lograr un texto que, sin traicionar el espíritu ni la sonoridad originales, resultase familiar a los hablantes del español chileno, en especial aquellos parlamentos de raigambre popular a cargo del Bufón de Lear y del Conde de Kent, disfrazado de sirviente.

Zde se sice ještì setkáme s "podivným oparem", který se nad vìcmi vznáší, ale již v následující básni " Epitaf " si autor-básník kope hrob. Zároveò se z nìj jakoby rodí jakýsi "antibásník", jenž sebe nazývá "smìsí octa a jedlého oleje, / plátkem andìlsko-zvíøecí tlaèenky!" S touto silnì pøitažlivou dvojí tváøí Parra v permanentním ironickém šklebu pøed námi bourá všechno posvátné, vše pohøbívá jako "Aristofanovi ptáci / pohøbívali mrtvoly svých otcù", vše obrací naruby, vše relativizuje a jako prokletý básník "se baví házením ptákù po kamenech".
