Untitled Document sheldon oberman is a writer and storyteller http://www.sheldonoberman.com/
Extractions: Boyds Mills. $14.95 (1-878093-22-3) Galley. Ages 6-9. In a quiet story with just the right touch of sentimentality. Oberman beautifully evokes a sense of continuity across generations Enhancing his third-person narrative with a smattering of dialogue, he tells of the Jewish boy Adam growing up in a shtetl, whose life drastically changes when famine and chaos in old Russia force his parents to immigrate to America. At parting. Adam's beloved grandfather gives the boy a gift. a prayer shawl ("my always prayer shawl"), which was presented to the grandfather by his grandfather, for whom Adam was named. Lewin's first paintings, in black and white, show the white-bearded grandfather in the shtetl, the soldiers with their guns, the tall buildings in America dramatically dwarfing Adam and his parents. Then, in one double-page spread that telescopes Adam's growing into manhood, the artwork leaps into glorious color. While Oberman's controlled text capsulizes the passage of time in words, the color paintings show Adam the man proudly wearing his Russian grandfather's shawl, then Adam the grandfather, passing the shawl and what it represents on to his own young grandson. As good as any of Lewin's best work, the watercolors are abundantly detailed and wonderfully expressive (the grandfathers and grandsons are at once different and the same).

Home Page Of Sheldon Oberman the Toronto premiere of Winnipeg author and playwright sheldon oberman's "The Always Prayer Shawl" twice at the July http://www.sheldonoberman.com/doc13.htm
Extractions: A Winnipeg Jewish Theatre production played to nearly-full houses at Toronto's Ashkenaz Festival of New Yiddish Culture this month, says WJT Artistic Director Kayla Gordon. The WJT presented the Toronto premiere of Winnipeg author and playwright Sheldon Oberman's "The Always Prayer Shawl" twice at the July 8 and 9 festival at The Harbourfront Centre. "There were about 250 people at each show," Gordon said last week of the play, which had its world premiere in Winnipeg last March. "It was almost full to capacity." Jews of all ages watched the production and other events at the festival. "There were a lot of families watching," Gordon said of the crowds at "The Always Prayer Shawl", which tells of a Jewish boy and his grandfather, and the prayer shawl that binds them together. "They really liked it." A member of Toronto's Holocaust awareness committee later approached her, and discussed the possibility of bringing the show back for presentation in Ontario schools. The board of the Ashkenaz Festival paid "95 per cent" of the cost of bringing the Winnipeg cast of "Prayer Shawl" to Toronto for the show, along with Gordon and director Mariam Bernstein.

The Always Prayer Shawl THE ALWAYS PRAYER SHAWL sheldon oberman Illustrated by Ted LewinHonesdale (Penn.), Boyds Mills Press, 1993 (c1994). 32pp, cloth http://www.umanitoba.ca/cm/cmarchive/vol22no3/revalwaysprayer.html
Extractions: 1994 May/June This is a comforting story about the importance of tradition and the certainty of change. At the beginning, Adam is a young Jewish boy growing up in Russia in the early 1900s. When the revolution forces his parents to seek a better life in North America, Adam must leave his grandfather, whose name is also Adam, and all that is familiar and dear. The prayer shawl his grandfather gives him takes on tremendous significance and, as Adam grows up, marries and becomes a grandfather himself, the prayer shawl remains a constant in his life. Events come full circle all those years later when Adam's grandson assures him that their "always prayer shawl" and their name "Adam" will continue through the next generations. The text is clear, simply written and concise. Sheldon Oberman, who has written for both children and adults, keeps the story on track and enables the reader to understand even complexities like the Russian Revolution and the passing of time. While it is obviously a story of great personal importance to Oberman, audience appreciation need not be limited to a study of Jewish culture. It will easily appeal to a wide range of readers and can be applied to many situations. The water-color illustrations are an effective mixa soft black and white to portray the past and muted colors to denote the present. Ted Lewin uses a realistic, portrait-like style, focusing on the main characters and their relationships. A gentle, pleasing rhythm, played out through both the words and the pictures in the story reflects the cyclical nature of life.
TV SAL AND THE GAME SHOW FROM OUTER SPACE TV SAL AND THE GAME SHOW FROM OUTER SPACE oberman, sheldon Illustratedby Craig Terlson Red Deer (Alta.), Red Deer Colle ge Press, 1993 . http://www.umanitoba.ca/cm/cmarchive/vol22no1/outerspace.html
Extractions: 1994 January / February TV Sal and the Game Show from Outer Space is a zany story about a girl who watches too much TV. Sal is at the cottage, where she has been watching TV all week long. Her family invites her to go for a walk with them, but she declines because she wants to watch more TV. After her family leaves she notices that there is something wrong with channel 2. The game show host of "Let's Make a Trade" hands her a list and tells her to go and get whatever is on that list so she can make a trade. Sal proceeds to do this and then jumps into the TV. Sal makes her trade and wins the "Universal Channel Changer," which allows her to participate in any TV show in the universe. Sal is trapped in bizarre, alien TV shows until the next day, when "Let's Make a Trade" is on again. She wins a trip back home again and rewinds the time so that she doesn't get into trouble for being away from home. At the end of the story her family is astounded when Sal says she doesn't want to watch any more TV.
