A Scots Quair trilogy, Lewis Grassic Gibbon By Dave Sherry THE TRILOGY, A Scots Quair, is by the same author who wrote Spartacus, a novel about the slave rebellion in ancient Rome. In A Scots Quair we follow the heroine, Chrissie Guthrie, through the First World War, the general strike, the betrayal by Ramsay MacDonald and the depression of the 1930s. Sunset Song, the first part of the trilogy, deals with the eclipse of the Scottish peasantry and the dramatic changes wrought on the land by the Great War. In the trilogy's second part, Cloud Howe, Chrissie is now a war widow with a young son and they move to the mill town of Segget. The general strike looms with hopes for a better world. The final part-Grey Granite-is set in the 1930s during the depression. Chrissie and her son Ewan have moved to Duncairn, a thinly disguised Glasgow, where Ewan joins the Communist Party and becomes an organiser for the Unemployed Workers Movement. Read this trilogy and be inspired. The madness of war Catch-22, Joseph Heller
Kwanza ngugi wa thiongo tells us that culture develops as part and parcel ofthe rhythm of daily and seasonal life of the community. Kwanza http://www.globalafrica.com/KWANZA.htm
Extractions: prince ntum ba azah "Kwanza is a Black-American celebration based on Agricultural celebrations and collective principles that contribute to unity and development of our community in the United States," (Dr. Conrad Worril, Final Call, Vol.17, No.9, Dec. 23 1997, P.24). Kwanza was reportedly created by Maulana Karenga in 1966. While its creation is attributed to Karenga, it is known that the ideas which form the basis of Kwanza were developed in a series of committee meetings over time. Other members of this committee are all faceless and nameless. Why? Dr. Worril states that the purpose of Kwanza is to introduce Black people to new values. Among these values is Nguzo Saba which constitutes the seven principles of Blackness which, "if practiced , would give us (i.e. the Blacks in North America) a set of priorities and commitments which would enhance our human possibilities and lead to our liberation and a higher level of human life. Another principle is Ujaama. This states that Black Americans must build and maintain their own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together. This is a collective principle. It must be noted that one of the key features of the United States of America is the creation of false religions, false theories, false doctrines and false philosophies which they hold to be universal. It is a nation built on evil, on genocide, on killings, on murder, on theft, on the forced enslavement of African peoples. That is what underlines and underpins American culture and American values. Consequently, this evil underpins the false doctrines that emanate from the United States.
Extractions: Sisi Maqagi, "Who Theorizes" Feminist criticism of African literatures is a steadily growing field. The following bibliography includes articles and essays in English and French which examine African literatures (fiction, poetry, drama and oral literature) from a feminist or womanist perspective. It does not include, unfortunately, criticism in other languages such as Wolof, Xhosa, Zulu, Portuguese, German, or Arabic due to my own inability to read those languages. Also, authors whose works are originally written in languages other than French or English, such as Ngugi wa Thiongo's plays and the novel, Devil on the Cross , and Nawal al Sa'dawi's works, may be under-represented in this bibliography, as criticism often tends to be written in the language of the work being addressed.

Extractions: Phone: (914) 395-2312 The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the rich, diverse history of the African continent by focusing on some of the better known African civilizations. This class is a continuation of the work that we completed last semester when we studied Ethiopia and Egypt. This term, we will conclude our investigation of ancient Egyptian society as well develop an in-depth understanding of Mali and Zimbabwe. We will discuss African history, culture, literature, and art. The main goals of our work will be to critically investigate how Africa is viewed and represented in the modern world, to learn different methodologies for uncovering African history and to compare African civilizations across time and geographical space. The three social categories of: merchants, queens, and hunter-gatherers will be used as tools for analyzing African history from a perspective that will enable an understanding of historical and cultural developments in the regions under study. For example, we will use the category of "merchants" to study how traders contributed to the development of a commercial revolution in Africa, "queens" to investigate the roles of women in various African societies and "hunter-gatherers" to describe different forms of economy and subsistence in Africa. By the end of the semester, you should be more familiar with the geography, history, art and archaeology of Ethiopia, Mali, Zimbabwe, and Egypt.

As I read the book, Frantz Fanon statement from his book, Wretched of the Earth came to mind "Europe is a creation of the third World" this I believe should be the guiding light to those Kenyans that pursue ostensible imperial-like lifestyles while people like Ngugi wa Thiogo's character Wangari who fought for the independence of the country live in dire poverty.

Extractions: Caryl Phillips, who occupies a unique place both in post-colonial literature and on the British scene, is one of the most talented and original contemporary writers. Bénédicte Ledent's study provides a thorough examination of his novels, from The Final Passage (1985) to The Nature of Blood (1997), considered in relation to his own plays and essays, and to his wide-ranging intertextuality. This volume starts from a textual analysis of Phillips's fiction and examines how it charts a new diasporic sensibility, grounded in the novelist's Caribbeanness but also expressive of a redefined sense of Britishness. Focusing on Phillips's pervasive interest in displacement, it also addresses characterisation and the non-conventional form of his narratives, two major aspects of his art which is discussed here in the context of current debates on post-colonialism.

His family was involved in the Mau Mau resistance to the colonists, and this experience features prominently in a great deal of his writings His early novels deal with the dilemmas of growing up in two worlds: as a Kikuyu/African and a Westerner/Christian. He was educated at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and the University of Leeds. His early works, Weep Not Child, The River Between, and A Grain of Wheat, depict the conflict of cultures and the role of Christianity, English education, and the increasingly oppressive treatment of the Kikuyu and other Africans, whose land had been taken by the colonists. In his 1986 Decolonising the Mind, his "farewell to English," Ngugi describes language as a way people have not only of describing the world, but of understanding themselves.
