John was there with Soundhole Records and Kirk was there showing his early guitars. John had been working with Chet to transcribe a book of his songs and they had done some recording together. John also did some guitar arranging for him and even co-wrote some tunes with him. B ecause of the natural mutual admiration Kirk and John hold for one another, John has been a very important player in the development of Sand Guitars. When Kirk first ventured to build a classical electric guitar, it was the input from his friend, John Knowles, that consistently contributed to refining and directing the design. Kirk would collaborate with John about the sound, especially. Each new prototype reflected his input and critique from the previous attempt and on and on until Kirk finally came up with the present design and it received the John Knowles nod of approval. It was five years in the developmental stages. W e will be eternally grateful to John for making that connection between Chet Atkins and Sand Guitars.

   Extractions: John Knowles John Knowles was born in 1926 in Fairmont, West Virginia. He left home at age 15 to attend Phillips Exeter Academy, a prestigious boarding school in New Hampshire. After graduating in 1945, he spent eight months in the U.S. Army Air Force's Aviation Cadet Program, then enrolled at Yale University, which awarded him a bachelor's degree in 1949. Knowles worked as a journalist and free-lance writer from 1950 to 1956. He traveled in Europe during this period and began to publish short stories. The playwright Thornton Wilder took an early interest in Knowles's fiction writing, encouraging him to write about compelling experiences from his past. In 1957 Knowles became an associate editor at Holiday magazine. The success of his first published novel, A Separate Peace, allowed him to resign this position and devote his time to traveling and writing fiction. Knowles has published eight other novels, a book on travel, and a collection of stories. He has lectured widely and served as writer-in-residence at Princeton University and the University of North Carolina. While none of Knowles's later novels received the critical and popular acclaim that greeted A Separate Peace

He graduated from Exeter in 1945, but did not immediately proceed to college. Instead, he joined the war effort as part of the U.S. Army Air Force's Aviation Cadet Program, and became a student at Yale University after completing several months in the program. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Yale in 1949. After graduation, Knowles traveled to Europe and worked as a journalist until the mid 1950's; his work also consisted of various free-lance pieces and short stories. When the novel became successful, Knowles was able to quit his job with the magazine, and devote himself to his writing. In addition to A Separate Peace, John Knowles has published eight other books; in addition, he wrote a travel book, and also published a collection of his short stories. Knowles was honored with the position of writer-in-residence at both Princeton University and the University of North Carolina, and has also given lectures at various schools across the country.

GEORGE SHERIDAN KNOWLES, RI, RBA, ROI, RCA Victorian Genre Artist The demand for pleasant genre scenes and images of bygone days were in great demand during the height of the Victorian era and many artists looked to fill the need; one of these artists was George Sheridan Knowles. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he spent his youth in the Manchester area and most likely received his formal training there. Knowles exhibited his earliest works in Manchester in 1883 and was residing at 117 Moss Lane, West, Manchester. It is likely that Frederick J. Knowles (a British landscape and figurative painter) was his brother and Juliet Knowles (a Victorian still life artist) was his sister since they also gave the same address in Manchester when they began to exhibit their works in the 1880’s.
