Extractions: Prior to last Sunday's playoff game between the Detroit Pistons and the Toronto Raptors, fans at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich., booed throughout the playing of Canada's national anthem. Adding further insult, Sunday also was the day Canada began burying the four soldiers accidentally killed by a U.S. bomb in Afghanistan. Pistons fans were more respectful during the playing of "O, Canada" before Game 2 against the Raptors. On the other hand, at least the Pistons displayed the Canadian Maple Leaf right-side up. The Pistons fans weren't alone. Some New York fans booed "O, Canada" before Wednesday's Islanders-Maple Leafs game and some Vancouver fans booed the "Star-Spangled Banner" before this week's Canucks-Red Wings games. None of this is particularly surprising. If you want a national anthem to receive a respectful and proper response, you play it at a more dignified gathering than in front of drunk fans at sporting events. As embarrassing as the "O, Canada" booing was, I think the lowest moment for a national anthem occurred a dozen or so years ago before a game in Minnesota when Ronald McDonald drove onto the field in a Big Mac-mobile, stopped the vehicle at second base, squeezed himself out and sang the "Star-Spangled Banner." As they say, only in America.

Extractions: Francis Scott Key was a respected young lawyer living in Georgetown just west of where the modern day Key Bridge crosses the Potomac River (the house was torn down after years of neglect in 1947). He made his home there from 1804 to around 1833 with his wife Mary and their six sons and five daughters. At the time, Georgetown was a thriving town of 5,000 people just a few miles from the Capitol, the White House, and the Federal buildings of Washington. But, after war broke out in 1812 over Britian's attempts to regulate American shipping and other activities while Britain was at war with France, all was not tranquil in Georgetown. The British had entered Chesapeake Bay on August 19th, 1814, and by the evening of the 24th of August, the British had invaded and captured Washington. They set fire to the Capitol and the White House, the flames visible 40 miles away in Baltimore.

Extractions: Click on the image to see a larger version The Francis Scott Key Monument by the French sculptor Jean Marius Antonin Mercie stands on Eutaw Place at Lanvale Street. Dating to 1911, the monument is a fountain composed of a sculptural tableau of bronze and marble within a granite-walled basin. The bronze figure of the poet Key stands in a marble boat with a seated bronze sailor, as they return from the British ship on which Key had been held during the bombardment of Ft. McHenry. The figure of Key presents his manuscript to the bronze figure of Columbia, who stands, flag upraised, high atop the stepped roof of a marble temple which rises from the center of the pool. Square in plan and with four Doric columns, the temple shelters a circular marble basin. Facing east, and marking the grave of Key and his wife, Mary Tayloe Lloyd Key, the monument features a bronze statue of Key atop a tall, cylindrical granite pedestal. At the base of the pedestal is an allegorical group of three bronze figures. A bronze tablet on the rear of the pedestal is inscribed with all four verses of the Star Spangled Banner The Francis Scott Key Monument, which commemorates the author of the Star Spangled Banner , is significant as an outstanding example of the work of sculptor Pompeo Coppini (1870-1957). The monument was dedicated August 9, 1898. The total cost of the monument was $25,000, paid for with funds contributed by school children and others from around the country, and a $5,000 allocation from the State of Maryland in 1897. We get something like a full-length portrait of this episode in a recently published volume bearing Key's name as its title and evidently proceeding from a descendant—F. S. Key-Smith. It is known that the hymn had its birth amid the cannon shots of the British attack upon the defenses near Baltimore on September 13,1814. Francis Scott Key was a temporary prisoner within the lines of the British fleet whither he had gone to intercede for the release of a friend, Dr. Beans, who had been held by Admiral Cockburn on an unjust charge. The mission succeeded, but the Admiral decided to hold his visitor until his little affair with the forts could be settled. Allowed to remain on their own vessel, the Minden Mr. Key's party were anchored in a position from which they could witness all that would take place in order that their humiliation might be the more complete from the victory which the British were confident of acquiring over their countrymen. In a letter to John Randolph, of Roanoke, the mission was described by Key, but no mention was made of the hymn: "You will be surprised to hear that I have since then spent eleven days in the British fleet. I went with a flag to endeavor to save poor old Dr. Beans a voyage to Halifax, in which we fortunately succeeded. They detained us until after their attack on Baltimore, and you may imagine what a state of anxiety I endured. Sometimes when I remembered it was there the declaration of this abominable war was received with public rejoicing, I could not feel a hope that they would escape; and again when I thought of the many faithful whose piety lessens that lump of wickedness I could hardly feel a fear.
