In pochi altri campi, infatti, quelli che sono definiti "i classici" di questa letteratura godono di continue ristampe e vengono riscoperti con eguale delizia da sempre nuove generazioni di lettori. Dalle prime storie di Edmond Hamilton che, tra il 1926 e il 1931, dischiuse con la sua Pattuglia dello Spazio le porte delle stelle più lontane e persino di lontane galassie, sulla scia del famoso Skylark of Space di Edward E. Smith, padre indiscusso della grande epica interstellare, per almeno vent’anni la science fiction fu un ribollire di idee rivoluzionarie, di novazioni strepitose, di concetti avanzatissimi per il periodo, e la felice comparsa di un nutrito drappello di giovani autori di grande talento, e di editors illuminati come John Campbell, produsse tutto un fiorire di romanzi e racconti capaci di parlare all’immaginario collettivo, di aprire orizzonti fino a quel momento mai intuiti, di gettare ponti di fantasia attraverso abissi che fino a quel momento erano stati appena sfiorati. Tra questi nomi mitici e conosciutissimi ancora oggi, si innestano poi altri autori, considerati a volte un gradino più sotto, ma che in realtà non hanno nulla da invidiare ai classici del periodo. In Italia poi, dove per lunghissimi anni si sono sottovalutati o ignorati scrittori di primissima schiera, quali Henry Kuttner o Leigh Brackett, si sono dimenticati a lungo capolavori e scrittori che in realtà hanno contribuito come e più di certi loro prolifici colleghi a portare avanti questa letteratura, a perfezionarne gli schemi, a tracciarne le mappe, le "nuove mappe dell'inferno" esplorate all’inizio degli anni ’50 in modo brillante ma parziale e superficiale da Kingsley Amis in un suo famosissimo saggio.

Hela samhället i romanen är uppbyggt kring att hjärnor från olycksoffer placeras in i olika fabriker där de tjänar som styr- och kontrollorgan på samma sätt som datorer nu för tiden. Vetenskapsmannen upptäcker att hjärnorna visst fortfarande är vid medvetande, och att de dessutom lider av att fortsätta sin existens på det här sättet.
