    Extractions: Dictionary (Levenger Press) A Guide to Samuel Johnson By Jack Lynch A number of requests for information on Johnson they come my way because of my Johnson page on the Web and my dissertation largely on Johnson have convinced me to put together a few paragraphs to introduce novices to Johnson. This is nothing like a comprehensive guide to the literature, although I do discuss some real bibliographies. I cover a few works of scholarship, and those not necessarily my favorites they're the ones that I think are most important for a beginner to know, the most often quoted, though not always the most thought-provoking. And this guide is unabashedly opinionated, though I hope my preferences aren't often perversely far from the mainstream. Still, it might be useful for people who've received no more formal introduction to Johnson studies. I don't pretend for a minute that this guide is anywhere near complete or comprehensive it was prepared off the top of my head. I don't know whether my omissions of important material are more grievous than the outright errors that are doubtless in here somewhere. But it might be useful to someone just getting started, and, since it's free, it would be a bargain at twice the price. I welcome comments and corrections; my address appears below. Samuel Johnson's life covers many points, but it's a story about overcoming considerable adversity, to ultimately become one of the best known men of his age. Johnson was born in Lichfield, England, on September 18, 1709; his father Michael was a bookseller. Johnson was not a healthy infant, and there was considerable question as to whether he would survive: he was baptized almost immediately. Johnson was scarred from scrofula, and suffered a loss of hearing and was blind in one eye, thanks largely to nursing from a tubercular nursemaid. During his toddler years, he had an open "issue" in his arm, to drain fluids. Stop for a moment, and think about a small child being singled out in this way, and what it must have meant. In spite of these infirmities, there are early tales of his independence. Once, when his babysitter failed to pick him up on time from nursery school, Johnson decided he would get home on his own, crawling on all fours in order to see the gutter and avoid falling in. The babysitter followed at some distance, but when Johnson saw her watching, protested against her following him, vehemently.

    Extractions: Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), often referred to simply as "Dr Johnson", was one of England's greatest literary figures. Although best remembered as the compiler of the first comprehensive English dictionary, Dr Johnson was more than a scholar. Born at Lichfield and educated at Oxford, he moved to London in 1737 with his wife, Tetty, who was twenty years his senior, and began to earn a living as a journalist, whilst working on plays, poetry and biographies. Johnson began his Dictionary of the English Language in 1747, but did not complete it until 1755. It made his name, but not his fortune. Another of his major works, the satire Rasselas (1759), was written specifically to raise money to pay for his mother's funeral. Johnson was at the centre of a literary circle which included such figures as Oliver Goldsmith, Edmund Burke and David Garrick, and founded the Literary Club. In 1763, a young Scottish writer, James Boswell , introduced himself to Johnson. Together they toured the Western Isles of Scotland in 1773, a journey which Johnson immortalised in print. Dr Johnson's last great work was the ten-volume Lives of the English Poets , published between 1779 and 1781. He died in 1784 and is buried in Westminster Abbey. [Adapted from

I include Johnson's biography of Swift in this collection with strong misgivings. Johnson was no friend or admirer of Swift, taking every opportunity to deride the author. (Some choice examples are included in the collection of quotes about Swift at this site.) Johnson extends his informal attacks on Swift with this essay, originally published in 1779, 34 years after Swift's death. He puts Swift's life and work in the worst light possible, while posturing as a generous and understanding critic. I decided to include this work inspite of its faults. Johnson's apparent bias and animosity does more to discredit the biographer than his subject. I hope the discriminating reader will find Johnson's prejudices against Swift to be their own undoing.
