Search Amazon.com This review by Carol Otis Hurst first appeared in Teaching K-8 Magazine Here's new illustrations and an old poem, both of which are beautifully combined. I remember doing the poem as part of a choral performance in college and it stirred me then as it does now the wonderful retelling of the Biblical story by the great Black poet. The images: the darkness was "Blacker than a hundred midnights down in a cypress swamp"; God clapped his hands "And the waters above the earth came down, the cooling waters came down". Johnson's God is a humanized one and therefore an understandable one. The illustrations like the poem are simple and childlike with bold colors and clear images. This is a book for a family to share.

Introduction James Weldon Johnson became the executive secretary of the NAACP in December 1920 and alongside Walter White, his assistant, Johnson was the driving force behind the NAACP campaign for the Dyer Bill.[ ] Mary B. Talbert wrote this letter to Johnson just eight days after the NAACP conference which inspired the formation of the Anti-Lynching Crusaders. Talbert indicated in this letter that the initial objective of the Crusaders was to focus on ending the lynching of colored women. The following two documents restate this view, but not enough documentary material has survived to evaluate whether the gendered goal stated in this letter became the sole justification for the Crusaders' fundraising campaign. Documents and suggest that the prevention of lynching of both white and black women was the objective of the Crusaders, at least as stated in their publicity flyers.

    Extractions: James Weldon Johnson was born on this date in 1871. He was an African American composer and lyricist and educator. From Jacksonville, Florida., Johnson was encouraged to study English literature and the European musical tradition. He attended Atlanta University with the plan that the education he received there would be used to further the interests of the black people. After graduation, he took a job as a high school principal in Jacksonville. In 1900, he wrote the song Lift Every Voice and Sing on the occasion of Lincoln's birthday; the song which became immensely popular in the black community and became known as the "Negro National Anthem," or Negro National Hymn. Johnson moved to New York in 1901 to collaborate with his brother Rosamond, a composer, and become successful as a songwriter for Broadway, but decided to take a job as U.S. Consul to Venezuela in 1906.
