    Extractions: Prints and Photographs Division On June 17 , 1775, American troops displayed their mettle in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the siege of Boston, inflicting casualties on nearly half of the British troops dispatched to secure Breed's Hill (the actual site of the battle). More than 15,000 colonial troops defended Boston at Breed's Hill, Bunker Hill, and Dorchester Heights following the battles of Lexington and Concord . African-American soldiers comprised approximately one-third of the rebel troops. Map Collections, 1500-1999 Five thousand British troops under the command of General Gage stormed Breed's Hill, where colonial soldiers were encamped. In their fourth charge up the hillside, the British took the hill from the rebels, who had run out of ammunition. The last rebels left on the hill evaded capture by the British, thanks to the heroic efforts of Peter Salem, an African-American soldier who mortally wounded the British commanding officer who led the last charge.     Extractions: James Weldon Johnson Commemorative Stamp On Feb. 2, 1988, the U.S. Postal Service released a 22-cent commemorative stamp honoring African-American lawyer, lyricist, U.S. diplomat, civil rights activist, novelist, poet, and educator James Weldon Johnson. First day of issue ceremonies were held in Nashville, Tenn. at Fisk University, where Johnson had taught creative literature from 1930 until his death in June 1938. The stamp's issuance came in the 50th anniversary year of Johnson's death, but the release date was moved from June to February to mark Black History Month. It was the eleventh issue in the Postal Service's Black Heritage series. The stamp shows Johnson along with the beginning of the song, " Lift Every Voice and Sing ," which many consider the black national anthem. While he may be best known as the lyricist for Lift Every Voice and Sing (a.k.a.The Negro National Anthem), his contributions in other occupations were exemplary. James Weldon Johnson was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1871 and educated in Jacksonville, Atlanta, and Columbia Universities. He studied law and in 1897 and became the first Black admitted to the bar in the state of Florida. In 1900, Johnson wrote the lyrics to Lift Every Voice and Sing with his composer/musician younger brother, J. Rosamond Johnson providing the music. They moved to New York City in 1901 and continued to write songs and musical plays. The team wrote more than 200 songs as well as a musical, The Shoofly Regiment. Johnson continued his graduate studies in literature and drama at Columbia University. He was fluent in Spanish and translated the libretto of the Spanish opera, Goyescas, for the Metropolitan Opera House. He also served as the United States Consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua experiencing many formidable incidents during this service from 1906 to 1913. Johnson wrote a novel called, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, during his consular service. James Weldon Johnson provided leadership for fourteen years at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). First, he served as field secretary, then he was the organization's first Black Executive Secretary.

    Extractions: Most modern Americans do not know the words to "Lift Every Voice and Sing," (see below) but in the segregated schools of the 1920's, black students would rise every morning and sing this "Negro National Anthem" written by James Weldon Johnson. Born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1871, Johnson grew up headstrong, willful, and courageous. Attending Atlanta University where he studied English literature and European music tradition, Johnson intended to use his education for the advancement of his race. While a freshman in college, Johnson took a trip throughout the rural South, igniting his interest in the African American folk tradition. Later he would incorporate the rhythms and ideals of these traditions in his uniquely beautiful poetry. After graduating from the University, Johnson first became a high school principal; then in 1906, he accepted the position of U.S. Consul in Venezuela and later in Nicaragua. While overseas, Johnson had several poems published in the United States.

Some might claim that this is a tacit admission of colored people among themselves of their own inferiority judged by the color line. I do not think so. What I have termed an inconsistency is, after all, most natural; it is, in fact, a tendency in accordance with what might be called an economic necessity. So far as racial differences go, the United States puts a greater premium on color, or better, lack of color, than upon anything else in the world." the protagonist (page 72) James Weldon Johnson's first-person narrator in his fictional account, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man , forwards a cynical, if not Darwinian, point-of-view about skin color. He claims it is "most natural" for black people to procreate with those who are lighter skinned. And he coolly excuses this supposedly common practice as pure economic necessity. The Black Nationalist must protest this fatalism. The Marxist simply chalks another one up for his side. What about the humanist? What is he or she to make of such unreasonable and callous tactics used to pursue the American Dream? The sympathetic humanist might bristle at first, but would eventually concur. For it's hard to argue with poverty. At the time the novel was published (1912), America held very few opportunities for the Negro population. Some of the more successful black men, men with money and street savvy, were often porters for the railroads. In other words the best a young black man might hope for was a position serving whites on trains. Our protagonistwhile not adverse to hard work, as evidenced by his cigar rolling apprenticeship in Jacksonvilleis an artist and a scholar. His ambitions are immense considering the situation. And thanks to his fair skinned complexion, he is able to realize many, if not all, of them.
