When Laurence Olivier's magnificent screen production of Shakespeare's Henry V was first disclosed to a group of Oxford's impassive Shakespeare pundits, there was only one murmur of dissent. A woman specialist insisted that all the war horses which take part in the Battle of Agincourt should have been stallions. The film was given its U. S. premiere this week (in Boston's Esquire Theater). This time, the horses engendered no complaint. At last there had been brought to the screen, with such sweetness, vigor, insight and beauty that it seemed to have been written yesterday, a play by the greatest dramatic poet who ever lived. It had never been done before. For Laurence Olivier, 38 (who plays Henry and directed and produced the picture), the event meant new stature. For Shakespeare, it meant a new splendor in a new, viral medium. Exciting as was the artistic development of Laurence Olivier, last seen by U. Extractions: American novelist. After a youth spent travelling America and Europe, James studied law at Harvard. His writing career began with literary reviews and short stories in 1865. His work can be divided into three periods. The first period deals with American influence on Europe with books such as Roderick Hudson (1875) Daisy Miller (1879) Washington Square (1880) Portrait of a Lady (1881) . The final novel in this period is The Bostonians (1886) . Having moved to England in 1876, his second period is concerned with English topics The Tragic Muse (1890) What Maisie Knew (1897) . In his last period he reverts to Anglo-American views in Wings of a Dove (1902) The Ambassadors (1903) and two unfinished novels. He is well known as the master of the psychological novel.
