Il n'a en effet pas connu son père (comme Garp, comme Homer Wells…) et lorsqu'il parle de "son père" dans ses mémoires, il s'agit du mari de sa mère, qui enseignait l'histoire russe dans une école privée à Exeter. C'est là qu'Irving fera ses études secondaires; il précisera plus tard à ce sujet: «Dire que j'avais du mal à suivre relèverait de la litote». John Irving souffrait de dyslexie et donc d'une très mauvaise orthographe. Passionné de lutte, il choisit son université surtout en fonction de son équipe et de son entraîneur dans ce sport. Il fait des études médiocres (il passait beaucoup trop de temps à lire) mais il est cependant admis à suivre un cours de "création littéraire". C'est la naissance de Colin, en mars 1965, qui évite à John Irving de partir au Vietnam - mais ne l'empêchera pas de continuer son sport préféré, la lutte. Mais, ajoute-t-il: " …ma condition d'homme marié, de père, et mon retour à la lutte me tinrent à l'écart des deux expériences les plus séduisantes qui aient marqué les années soixante: le sexe et la drogue.". Anderson Washington Irving was among the first generation born in the newly created United States of America. The year of his birth1783was also the year England officially recognized our new nation, ending the American Revolution. Irving was heir to the legacy of freedom won by the heroes of the war for American independence, a legacy that marked Irving's contemporaries as the first "lost" generation. With George Washington as their larger-than-life Founding Father, Irving's generation was unsure how to live up to his standard of achievement. Irving eventually earned the title of the "Father of American Literature," but his journey to that goal was fraught with anxiety. His was a search for freedom from not political oppression, but from the uncertainty of what to do with the freedom won by the founding fathers; his was a search for identity. This search consisted of three distinct phases. In the first phase, lasting until he was 33 years old, Irving's wealthy and indulgent family allowed him to drift casually through life. Irving, the youngest of eight children, was clearly the pet of the family. His father, William Irving, was a well-to-do merchant in New York City, a self-made Scotsman who had emigrated to America in 1763. An imaginative but sickly child, Irving was eventually groomed as a lawyer, but his real education took place on a grand tour of Europe in 1804-1806, in lieu of attending Columbia College as had his two older brothers, William and Peter. His adventures abroad included being attacked by pirates while en route to Sicily.

Aber wirklich bekannt wird er erst, als ihm ein Löwe während einer Reportage vor laufender Kamera die Hand abbeißt. Als Katastrophenmann ist er fortan bekannt; seiner Karriere schadet diese persönliche Katastrophe jedenfalls nicht. Eine der vielen zu Tränen gerührten Frauen ist Doris. Man sollte vielleicht noch erwähnen, dass Patrick durchaus als Frauenheld bezeichnet werden könnte. Doris ist allerdings sehr glücklich verheiratet. Eine engere Beziehung als die zu Otto wäre kaum vorstellbar - nur ein Kind fehlt noch zum vollkommenen Glück. Trotzdem: als Doris mit ansehen muss, wie Patrick Wallingford seine Hand verliert, sichert sie ihm spontan zu, dass er nach Ottos Tod dessen Hand erben würde. Nein, Otto ist kerngesund - nur für den Fall der Fälle. Und für diesen Fall stellt sie auch ihre Bedingung: sie will ein Besuchsrecht für Ottos Hand.
