I do have a family of 2 brothers, several cousins, neices, nephews, and a sister-in-law. The cuzs and sis have tried to be of tremendous support to me, but have also been in great denial. The brothers, The Honorable James Woodworth Luther of Ukiah, Calif., and John Morris Luther of Truckee, Calif., have been minus-zero in the support/communication department. I recently wrote a non-CFIDS friend about "brain fevers" I've been having; she responded that she'd remember THAT one. That it was one of the funniest she'd heard in a long time. She is still, to me, now, a most cherished and wonderful friend. But with all of you I could be honest, myself, my truest self. Thank God for your capacity for caring, even tho' you, also, have problems that we all can understand.

    Extractions: Great-granddaughter of James Irvine, an immigrant who assembled about 120,000 acres of what is now Orange County to form the Irvine Ranch, Mrs. Smith is known throughout the entire region for her philanthropy. Largely as a result of her efforts, the Irvine Company donated to the University of California Board of Regents 1,000 acres of land which later became the campus of UCI. A staunch supporter of the University of California's campus at Irvine since the dedication of the land, Mrs. Smith has received the UCI Medal, which is UCI's version of an honorary degree and its highest award. Mrs. Smith's award recognizes the key role that she played, and continues to play, in the development of the campus. A noted horsewoman, she has been actively involved in breeding, training, showing and selling world-class horses at her farms, The Oaks, in both California and Virginia. The courage and perseverance of Christopher and Dana Reeves inspired Mrs. Smith to take the lead in establishing the Reeve-Irvine Research Center. In addition to her grant to the Center, she has dedicated the proceeds from the Oaks Fall Classic, an annual grand prix equestrian competition, to augment and assist in the center's fundraising efforts.

    Extractions: Archives ... Mrs. Smith was the highlight of the evening as she shared her lifelong passion for history, and her feelings about the importance of documenting California's history. Smith is the great-granddaughter of James Irvine I, founder of the Irvine Ranch, and co-founder of The Irvine Museum, of which she is now the President of the Board of Trustees. She is also a long-time friend to and major supporter of this University. Co-author Jean Stern is a noted art historian and recognized authority on California Impressionism, and the Executive Director of The Irvine Museum. James Irvine Swinden, Mrs. Smith's eldest son, wrote the timeline for the book. He currently serves as Vice President of The Irvine Museum, where he has played an integral role in the development and organization of all of the Museum's traveling exhibitions. In addition, an informal exhibit of Orange County materials was prepared to honor the authors. It featured portraits, letters, books, and other items relating to four generations of Joan Irvine Smith's grandparents, beginning with her great-great-grandfather Harvey Rice.     Extractions: Hello all - Just read about 6 days' worth of digests - lucky I'm still here.....80).....Been having crash-like symptoms on and off, but wanted to let you all know that the Memorial Service for Joan Irvine, et. al., spread out to the West, all the way from Times Square. I'm a Unitarian Universalist and belong to the Fellowship in Boulder, CO. During our Sunday Service, we have a brief section called "Joys and Sorrows", in which congregation members are encouraged to share any joys or sorrows in their lives, and to light a candle if they so desire. Today, October 6th, I was getting ready to go our Sunday service with my family, and a thought struck me out of the blue. This was the day of the Memorial, and I could make a contribution to raising awareness while participating out here, on my own. Though somewhat nervous about speaking in front of the 100- 150 or so people, and knowing that this time was usually used for a quick, personal sentence or two, I still felt obligated, almost driven, as this opportunity to reach so many regarding CFIDS is rare, indeed. I quickly rushed to the computer and typed out what I wanted to say, so I wouldn't fall into a Brain Fogged stupor while in the "spotlight". The following is what I said (into a microphone, even!) while lighting the candle: "Chronic Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, is a disabling illness which causes physical pain and neurological difficulties. It is an often misunderstood illness. I know, I've been living with it since May of 1994.

Thanks to Pat Blankenship for providing copies of the letter images. If you click on the image of either letter you will see a larger copy of the image. The two attached letter copies point indisputablyas far back as early 1992towards the government's determination that the American blood supply, via blood transfusions, might prove to be one of the main transmission routes of Chronic Fatigue/Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS). Both lettersone composed by William C. Reeves, M. D., at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the other, by George W. Rutherford, then head of Infectious Diseases for the California Department of Healthwere replies to my inquiry (which documents some of my immunilogical AIDS-like test results, while I was under the care of Daniel L. Peterson, M. D., of Incline Village, Nevada) about the safety of the blood supply, were I, a well-documented CFIDS patient, to donate blood. These communiques were sent on 6/13/92 to about a dozen national news agencies. Shortly thereafter, on one day alone, the CDC received over 300 media calls regarding CFIDS contagion. Reeves, unfortunatelyand questionablywas not on hand that day to address the queries of the press. Despite so, the contents of the letters were publicly aired on many southern California TV stations and in publications, one being an article by Jean Griffin of The Chicago Tribune.
