He is describing the experience of reading a story, the moment when you don’t even see the words any more, and instead see the picture the words are describing. You forget where you are, and are caught up completely in the scene you are reading about. This idea mirrors the experience many people have had of the sacred and spiritual. Many people feel the presence of God on mountaintops, and when surveying beautiful scenery. The scene before them becomes more than something from the material world. It is infused with the spiritual, and they are caught up into the presence of God. Equally God can be found in other people; the person who gives us just the words we needed to hear, the touch we longed for, the inspiring message that enabled us to face life again, the generosity that humbled us. Sometimes, “proving” God’s existence becomes unnecessary. We know God exists because, through the world and the people around us, a greater dimension has shone through, and we have walked in the light of the Lord.

Born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, he attended the local grammar school there before going on to study English language and literature at Keble College, Oxford. He taught at Leeds University from 1954 until 1980 and later at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. In 1988 he became University Professor and Professor of Literature and Religion at Boston University.
