    Extractions: As I flick through the paper in the morning I look forward most to the obituaries: people lead such fascinating lives. But what interests me about them is not the success they later achieved but their early difficulties and how they overcame them. This week the poet David Gascoyne died, one of three aged poets who have died recently, the other two being Elizabeth Jennings and Anne Ridler, all of whom, interestingly, wrote on Christian themes. David Gascoyne published his first book of poems as a teenager and his collected poems before the Second World War. But later things went wrong for him. As his obituary put it But depression, fuelled by amphetamine abuse took its toll. Writing dried up and, in the 1960s, Gascoyne retreated in despair to his parents home in the Isle of Wight, fetching up, after his father's death, in the local asylum. There, a miracle occurred. A therapist named Judy Tyler Lewis read one of his poems, 'September Sun', to the inmates. When he claimed it as his, she thought it one more of his delusions. But they married, and lived happily thereafter on the island. I love to imagine that scene. David Gascoyne in deep depression in a mental hospital suddenly hears a member of staff reading his poem, yes his poem. Then the desperate attempt to convince her that yes, it really was his. Someone had recognised, had understood, his heart's voice.

    Extractions: After low cyclonic activity over summer, for many Gascoyne and Murchison pastoralists that window of opportunity to get good winter rains has just about closed as July winds to an end. Overall it's been a bag of mixed fortunes for pastoralists across the regions. After two dry summers, and little winter rain in 2001/02, many pastoralists in the Gascoyne and Murchison made the decision around October and November last year to destock quite substantially. And it's proving to have been quite a wise management decision to make. It's not all bad news though, it seems many have taken advantage of good returns, fortunately, prices for sheep and cattle have remained buoyant and certainly sustainable. But otherwise, the picture for many is pretty grim. David Steadman from Wooramel Station says they've not nearly had enough rain, and he's certain the next few months are going to be some of the toughest. He says all they can do now is wait for summer rain, which will only come if there's cyclonic activity generated in the north. David says they've had about 75 millimetres of rain this winter, but it's not enough.
